Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I'm on the look out for a pair of front seats with the crests - people keep telling me that the 997 seats i have currently fitted are superior and the 996 aren't great, but the prices people are asking for them doesn't seem to reflect that - i'm not willing to spend £800 on 2 seats to get it back to OEM spec, so i'll wait and watch
Leading evidence: 'Install are superior and the 996 aren't great' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'storage' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install are superior and the 996 aren't great' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I think the biggest problem is storage for all the items.
Set would be over £1000...for some moulded plastic

Suggestion
The plastic undertrays and arch liners are a huge cost, I'd think a full set would be over £1000...for some moulded plastic.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have my project on a spreadsheet, every nut and bolt - the total is quite depressing.
So i was thinking how much i could sell the car for and i can clearly make more by breaking it - (that isn't the plan, i just had a slow day to fill at work)
What struck me was the cost of some standard parts:
Oil hose - 600
Power Steering pressure - 530
Power Steering return - 330
Clutch lines - 280
Got me thinking what the scrap value is for a 996, especially now with corrosion being a problem and people wanting body cuts. Out of interest, anyone done it?
Must be a few engines that have gone pop and the car got broke - must be close to getting your cash back I'd have thought.
I think the biggest problem is storage for all the items. How long do you keep everything you have to sell? Some parts sell quick and others never get an enquiry. I had a lot of 993 parts to make an RS looky likey. I thought a new pair of genuine front splitters would sell straight away and they were the last to sell. I had a lot of cheapskate offers but you have to stand firm. Don't think breaking cars is the road to riches!
Crikey, i spend less than 90 days in the UK each year, definitely not looking to start a business.
No I was wondering if anyone has done it out of pure interest. There's been loads of engines that have died, so must be a few people that got rid of the car.
I broke my escort and sold the lot in less than a week. That wasn't planned though, i just found a better one part way through restoring my current one. But the rally boys are always after parts so the market is buoyant on those.
Pareto states that 20% off the parts is 80% of the value.
I didn't think you were wanting to start a business but just trying to offer a perspective when I have been selling second hand parts. If you are out the country and someone want's a part are they going to wait for you to get home or look elsewhere ? Lot's of breakers like 9apart who offer a good service so you need to beat them on price to attract the customer.
From my limited experience a scrap 996 is about £5k.
The engine is the most valuable part, if it is broken then it is worth £2.5 k with all ancilliaries, ( I tried selling mine on here with no takers and went to Hartec).
The front end of a 996 including the doors are Porsche Boxster and there are hundreds being broken so are low value.
So othere than the trim/seats you are left with the gearbox and bits and pieces.
There is not a big market for rear deck lids, but bumpers are saleable however once off the car they are huge!!!!!
I ended up throwing a lot of parts away.
Did you buy those hoses from an OPC or D911 ?
I mean you can easily have any hoses made for about £20-£50 depending on fittings and lengths.
Ask on here before you pay those prices for very universal items..we can help
I’m always wondering what someone like 9-apart would pay for a fully working 996 thats mot failed only on body corrosion.
One day I'm sure i will have the answer
Like it's been said, there's not much value in them as a lot of the car is a Boxster and they're fairly cheap and plenty being broken. Engine and gearbox probably has the most value.
All the seats are looking pretty tired now
Suspension is not worth buying used ,
Brake calipers have some value as long as the bleed nipples haven't been stripped.
Wheels not much
The shell is the most valuable item but it wouldn't be being broken unless it's damaged beyond repair or rotten.
To break one for spares I reckon you'd need the car for £2k and you might have a chance but it'd be a very poor business model.
Think you'd be surprised just how much some parts do go for.
I know of a guy who broke a 986 recently with a duff engine, he got as much money back as the car was worth driving, but admittedly it took a while to sell all the parts and you have to have the space to store them all. I think he ended up scrapping the shell.

These cars are getting on a bit and there is demand for second hand parts to keep them on the road - the ultimate green recycling project
I had a lovely 996 C4 rear bumper. I tried selling it for 2 years! In the end I gave it away,
Have you ever tried to store one, mine lived in the garage then the shed then the roof of my garage then the veggie plot it was huge and was even a struggle to fit in my then volvo v70.
There were no takers and no interest even at £25!
If breaking a car all the good bits go quickly and you are left with the stuff people want but only very occasionally
That power steering hose is a bit of a *****, it goes right up by the tank iirc. There's about 3 different types, annoyingly i think mine was the most expensive version, but it's quite a complicated line. It's also the one that often corrodes on the ferrule and people put a jubilee clip on.
The clutch lines are all GT2, front, middle and centre. All bought via fearnsport.
Good point on the boxer stuff.I think if you get a well optioned car, there are some expensive carbon and leather options. Anyone with a turbo will get good money for their gearbox from the Ultima crowd.
I've sold some obscure parts on eBay I thought no one would ever want, like Fuel balance hose, air line, oil lines, gearbox brackets, arch liners. My bumper and decklid went rather quickly. I've noticed a few brackets that only come on assemblies. One thing people overlook is fasteners. I actually asked a breaker to put them all in a box and give me them as a job lot next time he breaks a car. No reply. I like getting them plated and changing out the rusty ones, easier to do with spares, but they cost a bloody fortune to get the right ones.
Working away means I just pack, measure and weigh everything before I leave, then send the label to the wife and she drops it off. The only fly in the ointment is when she gets a bag on and doesn't talk to me. Lol
I do the same with fasteners..they're a crazy price from Porsche.
I keep thinking we should make up a type of shop on here where you can post places to get the same or very similar parts for a fraction , kind of like a database for all things that are just too expensive from your OPC.
The plastic undertrays and arch liners are a huge cost, I'd think a full set would be over £1000...for some moulded plastic.
Front bumpers (covers) take a bashing but I think they're like £800 plus paint !! For some plastic
Edit...A front bumper for my 98 C2 is £1111.80 then you've got to pick it up in a big car or van and drop it off at a paint shop , £500 later you go and pick it up and try to fit it but all the fasteners are wrong and bodged by PO's so back to OPC and another £100 for a small bag of little bits.
