I ordered a new one and replacement appears straightforward if not a bit fiddly, just remove existing from the plastic frame or inner trim and replace, ensuring it is properly aligned, etc.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ensuring it is properly aligned, etc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). After replacing the rubber trim on mine, there were a few very slight wrinkles or unevenness in the lower horizontal portion of the trim piece...very, very slight, but I am a bit obsessive on things like this.

Run your thumb over the inner edge of the seal after to find any high spots that need to be tucked in fully.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All, quick search didn't yield any results. The rear window rubber trim (not the inner/lower actual seal) has shrunk and started to pull away at the rear corners. I ordered a new one and replacement appears straightforward if not a bit fiddly, just remove existing from the plastic frame or inner trim and replace, ensuring it is properly aligned, etc. Before I tear into this, anyone here done this and any gotcha's? Minor fault, but the car is near perfect.
Cheers
No input on this, but subscribed for feedback from someone who's done this. My 1999 is starting to show a few cracks in the rear window seal. I was thinking of using a body shop. There is supposedly a local company that does excellent work on seal replacement, but I have not sought them out yet. Good luck if you decide to go DIY
Do you have photos of your current trim? I think I have a similar issue on both my rear window and front windscreen. Im curious if new outer trim will stay in place vice rising up in various locations like the current trim. Ill add a few photos once I return home.
Cheers Bret
Well, done and came out as good as new. Not difficult at all, but fiddly and the new seal is larger than the window channel, to compensate for shrinkage I assume, so you have to spread out the excess over the top and sides as you go along inch by inch pushing the outer seal into the inner plastic channel. Also, be careful removing the old seal as it may lift the inner channel.
Old seal/trim (car is dusty...caught in t'storm just before);
New one going in;
So just a matter of carefully pulling it out then easing the new one back in with a trim tool or other plastic implement? Mine is doing the same thing.
Yes, I expected a bit more. Fiddly as you work 1/2" at a time, but not bad at all. Make sure to spread the 'extra' around evenly. Run your thumb over the inner edge of the seal after to find any high spots that need to be tucked in fully.
sweet! the rear seal on mine came out in one area, and I've noticed its growing. It's almost like the seal is too long.... so wonder if it was recently replaced?
I've tried pushing it back in with my fingers but never thought of using the pry tool.
Yes, use a dull one. There is a narrow sweet spot that when you push, you hear or feel a dull click as the rubber seal locks into the channel, just on the outer edge of the slightly ridged section where the trim tool is pushing in the pic.
WingsWheelsHulls,
Enjoy flying the SNJ! If you haven't tried it with the canopy open and a leather helmet, give it a shot; the experience is fantastic. My father's first carrier landing was in an SNJ and he later owned two examples.
Cheers,
Bret
Update after a few months. After replacing the rubber trim on mine, there were a few very slight wrinkles or unevenness in the lower horizontal portion of the trim piece...very, very slight, but I am a bit obsessive on things like this. Honestly, few others would have noticed, but I did. I fiddled with it then after a few longer drives, some time sitting in the hot sun, say in a parking lot during lunch, then back to a cool garage, the unevenness is gone and it looks almost perfect.
So, the lesson is if you do this, and you are like me, before you drive yourself crazy, let it sit through a few heat cycles....
