Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I changed because 2nd just wasn't slick enough for my liking and the PTX got it a lot better, not perfect but a big difference.
Leading evidence: 'Replace because 2nd just wasn't slick enough' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill 996' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Does this mean it's also the ideal fill for a 996?

I went for the Motul, as it was recommended by Opie, and was a good price.

I did also fit Powerflex gearbox bushing insert at the same time which probably also helped somewhat, but I can totally recommend the Shell Spirax.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys, going to do my first manual gearbox oil change on my Porsche 911 Carrera 996 4S 2003.
There seems to be three schools of thought, first one being Genuine Porsche the second Motul Motylgear 75w-90 and the third Swepco201 80w-90.
What do you guys think?
I'm about to do the exact same thing today on my 98 C2 ! I went for the Motul, as it was recommended by Opie, and was a good price. Been soaking the plugs in WD40 for 24 hours!!
You may find the box under pressure when you crack the fill plug. Get ready for the stink too if it's old oil.
My preferred oils have been the Motul or the redline MTL.
Never heard of the Swepco. I ordered the Motul 300 from opieoils but ended up returning it and eventually getting 20L of Mobil PTX (I assume this is what you mean genuine even though it's not a Porsche item). I've sold the remainder already and there's always people looking to grab some off you.
I doubt penetrant oil will help but couldn't hurt. If you're doing the work with the car on jacks, the easiest way to crack it open is to use a second jack and lift the breaker bar until it pops.
The first change is, Youtube videos could be people on their second change onwards. Torque from factory and tightening torque when you put the plug back on are quite different.
Motul Motylgear is meant to be pretty good,
@Slippydiff
has used it with good results.
The Motul 300 just doesn't play nice at all in these.
I think the Redline 75w90 NS is pretty good too. I had that in the 996 for quite a while.
PTX is definitely a bit nicer though, it just gives that nice rifle bolt feel. I went from new Porsche oil to the PTX too, I had the other one in there, not the PTX. I changed because 2nd just wasn't slick enough for my liking and the PTX got it a lot better, not perfect but a big difference.
But the Redline is good, I have that in the 997 at the moment. I have a slight weep on the rear driveshaft so not swapped for the PTX I have sat there yet until I can build some cribs to lift my car up high enough to get that done.
I haven't done it yet but my plan is to use Millers EE Performance MTF 75w90 in both the gearbox and front diff.
The reasons for this are threefold. The first is that Millers list the specific Porsche parts numbers indicating compatibility for the 996 and also 991.1 PDK.
The second reason is that I used this oil in the rear section of my 991.1 PDK transmission - the gears and final drive. The front section takes an ATF/DSG fluid. After five track days and some road miles, I can say that this Millers 75W90 is very good.
The third reason is that this is Miller's premium 75w90 offering and has esters which can, among other things, plump up older seals.
Does this mean it's also the ideal fill for a 996? The relevant Porsche part numbers for this application are claimed by Millers so when the time comes I'll find out!
I was wondering if anyone had used millers ee yet.
I’m hoping to have my gearbox out over the winter and replace the selector shaft seal, didn’t want to buy 20l of ptx so will probably use millers ee.
I used 3 Litres of Original Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90 Gear Oil GL-4 GL-5.
Apparently it is an OE option similar to Mobil PTX and is designed specifically for transaxles so is GL4-GL5. It really made a huge difference to my shifting 1-2 when cold, like night and day improvement. I did also fit Powerflex gearbox bushing insert at the same time which probably also helped somewhat, but I can totally recommend the Shell Spirax. I went with it because I could buy just the 3 x 1 litre bottles I needed, whereas PTX was by the drum only.
