and that it was the softer clutch in my friend's car that made me think maybe there's something wrong with mine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was out with my friend who got his Cayman S today. We were comparing my car and his. Both of us went for manual transmission with the short shifter option. I noticed that the shifting in his car is noticebly smoother than in mine (especially going into 2nd and 3rd gear). I did tell Porsche people when I first got my car that the shifting feels a bit stiff, but they said it 'feels fine'... The thing is, at the time they didn't have any other Cayman S with manual and short shifter... so they didn't have anything else to compare to... but now I can show them how my friend's car feels different...and his clutch is a bit softer actually.
This is irritating but let's see what they'll do about it.

I have 2000Km and it is still a bit stiff in first and second. Other gears are ok, but could be smoother - I will wait for the 3000Km (2000mil) mark as that is suppose to be the end of the break-in period. I don't have the short shifter, and since I don't race shorter throws would be nice but are not a must. I think in general short shifter will be harder since that is part of the trade-off - the leaver arm is decreased, increasing the force required, but as you pointed out, you were comparing with a friend - do both cars have about the same amount of millage on them, and were they broken in the same way ( e.g. long drives, short drives, vs city driving, etc ). Good luck and I hope the shifter becomes as smooth as silk !!!
euroboy: The short shifter is not actually like you think it is. The lever itself is the same length (height if you like). It's actually the travel distance that's 15% shorter than on the standard one. So it's the effect of a shorter leaver arm.
My friend has a short shifter too. So that rules out any differences there. His car is brand new (he only got it yesterday) and mine has like 5600km on it already. So I'm way past any break-in point. I'll have to check with Porsche and see what they comment.
I'll get back to you with my findings.

In most cases that I have seen shorter shifts are achieved by shifting the pivot point which increases forces required to shift with the benefit of shorter throws. I should take another look at the Howto Article as that has some pictures - maybe that will give me a better idea /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif In any case sounds like your car is well beyond the break in period - I would say for sure take it in and have them look at it - it still might be within tolerances, but it is better to know that for sure - good luck and keep us posted.
Im at 2500 miles and mine is mostly smooth into each gear. Sometimes it is a little notchy going into second, but I only notice it when Im half *** shifting, not when Im pushing it.
Update: We went there (my friend and I) and we took both cars. We saw Porsche's chief engineer at the dealer (a German geezer; he sounds like he knows his stuff... I can't say any nasty things about him cos he's probably a member here ;-)). anyway, to keep the story short, we went out in both cars and drove around for a while switching between the cars. He said he didn't feel anything wrong with the shifting in my car. He did however agree that the clutch in my friend's car is a littlebit smoother (softer) than the one in mine.... but nothing wrong with the shifting at all.
I too tried out both cars again, and I tend to agree with what the Porsche guy said. For me (after having done 5700km in my car), I can even tell the sliiiightest difference in the clutch and in gears. After testing them again, I think I'm convinced that the gears are okay.. and that it was the softer clutch in my friend's car that made me think maybe there's something wrong with mine.
Anyway, at least now I feel good about it as I've done what I can to verify that it's okay. Let's hope it is.

Just like people, no two cars will be exactly the same. They will all have some differences, due to minimum and maximum machining tolerences. Even within spec, they will be different.
Zuksh,
Are you in Dubai & do you recommend a manual or tiptronic? I have booked a manual but having second thoughts about it due to Dubai traffic. However, I could always take the delivery & sell it as there is a huge demand. Other than the clutch/shifting issues discussed here & the Dubai traffic, I really like the manual.
Thanks
Only gear I've really had to jam into is reverse. Don't see how some of the guys mistakenly shift in reverse when they think they're in 1st. I have to really pop it.
03LX470: Sorry for the late reply. I would definitely go for a manual. I test drove the tip tronic before I got mine and yes it's good.... but the manual is way more fun. I just couldn't see myself using the tiptronic to control the gears. Probably the first week.. but then after that you'll just slap it into drive and never play with the tiptronic.
As for traffic in Dubai... well I gotta say it's a real pain in the %$£... but luckily for me, I live in Abu Dhabi which doesn't have much traffic jams.
Seems to me you're driving a Lexus now which I presume is an automatic. Switching from auto to manual will hurt at first... your legs will ache at the start unti your mussels get stronger (left leg). it's been okay for me as my previous car was a manual too... so I'm used to it.
Once you get your car, take it down to Al Ain and drive up Jebel Hafit... it's the most amaaaaazing drive ever... a winding road going up the mountain... two lanes going up and one for traffic coming down... AMAZING! I've been there three times already and can't get enough! Avoid weekends cos there can be some traffic... which can sometimes be fun when you're overtaking them ;-) but I prefer an empty road. Last time I went, a friend of mine was behind me in his Cayenne Turbo... there's no comparison... I wasted him;-) But his car does make a wicked noise

Oh, one other thing... after I ordered my car (and before I took delivery)... I saw the Top Gear episode on the Cayman S. So Jermey didn't like the car... I thought fair enough, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion... but when he went on about how you could (with the short shifter option) quite easily accidentally put the car into reverse instead of 1st gear, I got realllly concerned... until I got my car... and when I did, it made me wonder why he ever said that. I mean there's no way on earth you could mistake it... The click between first and reverse is so damn obvious you'd have to be an idiot not tonotice it...
The ONNNNLY way you could end up in reverse instead of 1st is if you SLAP the gear in really hard(like literally bring your hand down with speed and SLAP the lever into gear) but why the hell would anyone do that!!!
Zuksh
Before getting the car I was wondering about short shifter and rear gear engaged by mistake according to what I readin the previous posts. Now with a short experience I can tell:
Short shifter is amazing/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thumbsup.gifly precise.
Needs a short time to find the good way to engage the rear, firm action to the left then push.
in addition, with aid parking equiped, you've got a audio signal to confirm, very good point!
But i would not say never it will happen to make mistake...
Tro, still in break in..

You're in Abu Dhabi?! Let me recommend to you a nearbyplace to take your car for a spin. Go past the second roundabout (the entrance)of the Emirates Palace Hotel... make sure the road is empty... and when you get to the next roundabout, slip it into 2nd gear and give it all you got as you make a right turn at the roundabout.... and justfeel the car grip the road like mad... Do a loop around that area (the public beach)... watch the speed bump though!!! you have been warned... then repeat the above when you get to the roundabout again... Enjoy!
The ULTIMATE place to take the car to is Jebel Hafit in Al Ain. If you haven't been to it already, program your navigation (if you have it) for the Jebel Hafit Hotel in Al Ain... when you get there, you'll know what I'm talking about... that road was made for the Cayman S.
Zuksh
Here's a google earth shot of the road I'm talking about... Unfortunately it's not high res. It starts in the upper left hand corner and ends up the mountain in the lower right hand corner. Amazing ride!
I have the factory ss in my car 875 miles. I have had 4 cars all with ss 3 bmw's and1 z06 vette. It feels great too me but the 3 to 4 shift is a bit tricky and i know it's not just me. I let a big time racer drive the car last week around town and his first time 3-4 he couldn't find it at first.
I will be carefull on that 100 mph downshift/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif
