Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You need to reset it after disconnecting anything.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect anything' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect anything' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

I repeated the test for the exterior handle and the same result, light illuminated.

The test I used was to sit in the car and close both doors, windows down.

I next replaced the door latch mechanism since I had to do the driver's side for a different reason and had procured a new pair. Despite fitting a new door latch, the comfort drop on the passenger window is still not working.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Comfort Window Drop is, I believe, the technical name for when you lightly pull either the interior or exterior door handle and the window drops a few millimetres to allow the door to open without snagging the rubber seal. The car is a 996.2 Carrera 4S coupe.
My driver's side works fine with both the interior and exterior handle, but the passenger door doesn't work. The window motor doesn't even try to move, no sound, nothing.
I tested the microswitches in the interior and exterior door handle, and both seem good. The test I used was to sit in the car and close both doors, windows down. Lightly pulling the interior handle (enough to trigger the microswitch but not to open the latch) the dome light above the windscreen came on. Releasing the handle switched the light off again. I repeated the test for the exterior handle and the same result, light illuminated.
I have therefore ruled out the door handle microswitches as a potential issue. I next replaced the door latch mechanism since I had to do the driver's side for a different reason and had procured a new pair.
Despite fitting a new door latch, the comfort drop on the passenger window is still not working. The electric window on the affected door (passenger side) works okay. The one touch full window drop also works on this door when tapping the electric window button, although not the one touch up. This may be a design feature for the passenger side - not sure. On the driver's door one touch full up and down work nicely, as does the comfort window drop.
I believe that I've ruled out the two door handle microswitches (interior and exterior handle) and also the lock/latch mechanism. What should I look at next?
Your window up is not set. You need to reset it after disconnecting anything. This totally explains why your comfort mode isn't working and your 1 touch window up isn't working.
Because the car has lost it's memory of where the top position of the window is (so fully up) it can't operate comfort mode or 1 touch up mode. Get in your car, close the door and turn the ignition on, then lower the window fully. Release the switch, and press the down switch again for about one second, then release it. Next, raise the window to the top, release the switch, and then hold the up switch for about five seconds after the window has closed. This procedure should restore the one-touch functionality for both the window's up and down movements.
Thanks Alex.
Despite performing the one-touch relearn on the passenger door window, there is still no function of the comfort drop.
I've measured the voltage on pin 1 of the window motor and it doesn't drop to ground when I activate the door handle. When unplugging the multi-pin connector from the window motor and activating the handle the 12V drops. This indicates an internal PCB issue inside the window motor.
I'll procure a replacement left-hand window motor and hopefully the comfort drop will come back to life!
