Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Check play' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check play' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I've recently bought a 996 turbo s manual. I've noticed a clunk noise from roughly below the centre console area when coming off throttle and going back onto throttle at lowish speed.
I'm guessing there must be some sort of rubber bush on the prop/front diff that is worn.
Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Tried searching on here but no joy.
Thanks
You ideally need the car on a ramp .. undertrays removed and a visual inspection .. you would check the suspension whilst looking .
There is a rubber doughnut but its at the back of the gearbox so behind the front seats and central .
The prop at the front is splined into the front diff .
Thanks for the replies. I've had a look at some pics of the front diff assembly and I see that there are 2 mounting bushes near the front of the car and one a single round bush which is located roughly where the sound seems to be coming from near the middle of the car
I'll get it up on a ramp and have a look.
Has anyone had to replace this single mount?

Number 10 on the parts diagram that I've linked to above
Link doesn't work but i assume you mean no.10 on my image ..
If so no and i've never replaced the front diff mounts for a noise either ....
Anything is possible though ... might be a loose fixing :dont know:
I would lean towards a driveshaft though as already mentioned .
Yes, thats the one. Had a look underneath with the covers off. There is a little movement
I wonder if it could be the propshaft rubber coupling instead, I forgot to inspect it.
The noise is a metallic type of clonk as it takes up drive, definitely transmission related. I'll have a look at the driveshafts but the noise isnt from that area
The prop rubber doughnut is at the rear .. not sure you would get a noise at the front but it does need inspecting as these do split .
Driveshafts and they are in the right location .. its a case of trying to move them .. checking for play .. after that its a pry bar on just about everything looking for play .
The worst way .. what we call a chassis ear .. a microphone setup we attach to different points .. then a road test and a listen through headphones to try and locate the noise .. this can mean several attempts with x2 mechanics .. so this sort of thing ends up costing i'm afraid .
