It was on my list of things to do after buying the car, picked up from all sorts of places - somebody had said once they cleaned the MAF the idle after startup was much better (mine was a bit lumpy, but I know that's probably normal).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yesterday I cleaned the MAF sensor and ICV (using proper MAF cleaner). Today I started the car (it's been sat for a few days) and the engine check light came on ... OBC reader showed random misfires (cyls 1,3,4,and 6)!! The car was running perfectly previously, so I'm going to assume that these things are (hopefully) related. I only drove it for a couple of minutes, as I wanted to get back tot my garage as soon as I saw the light! Any ideas? If I'd have driven it for a while do you think it would have cleared itself?

POST 2Original post

Can i ask why you cleaned the maf...? I'd hazard a guess it's got something to do with that myself.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was on my list of things to do after buying the car, picked up from all sorts of places - somebody had said once they cleaned the MAF the idle after startup was much better (mine was a bit lumpy, but I know that's probably normal). I didn't think it could do any harm provided I used the correct cleaner (Moly MAF cleaner).

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a feeling it's because I didn't allow sufficient drying time before I put it ll back together -- I mean it was literally a couple of minutes, but I've just realised it needs to dry for at least 30!! Hopefully I've not caused any serious damage, so I'll take it apart, clean it again and leave it for 24 hours before reassembly

POST 5Original post

I get that, something i've always done to new cars too.... did it to my 996 too. Have you tried the throttle body reset procedure..? Open the drivers door, leave it open, open engine cover and leave open, put key in ignition at pos 1 for 60 seconds, turn ignition off for 15 seconds then start car. YOU MUST LEAVE THE DRIVERS DOOR AND LID OPEN... you'll hear recab noises. Worth a try, or disconnect and reconnect the maf until it clicks.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2763971

Great .. I'll re-clean and reassemble after proper drying, which will also eliminate any assembly issues, then try the reset.

POST 7Original post

You could also try driving with the maf unplugged to eliminate it as the cause.

POST 8Original post

What Skoosh said, if that doesn’t work then it could be a number of things. eliminate that first

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 2763971

...oh and don't touch the throttle during the procedure.

POST 10Original post

when i've had misfire codes in previous cars, the coil packs are the usual suspects Wasn't aware of the throttle reset procedure though, thats great info - is that something thats recommended to be done regularly or just if you experience similar problems to the OP?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'd be surprised if it's coil packs ... it was running perfectly 2 days ago, and started misfiring on 4 of the cylinders 4 hours after I replaced the MAF after cleaning it (and not letting it dry properly)!

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 2764006

My idle was slightly uneven to my ear so I tried the TB reset and worked a treat. Not done it since but it's handy to know.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 2764008

Sods law, never say never Fingers crossed the reset procedure sorts it out

POST 14Original post

I believe it may be common practice to do after a maf clean or change.

POST 15Original post

Fingers crossed panda
