POST 4Original post

Hands down, San Antonio Texas area! Year Round driving Famous "twisted sisters" and other roads like it nearby Politics? Haha, not going there! Much to say, Texas is a very red state! Weather - Nothing severe, occasional gully washer (that's Texas for a downpour), some isolated hail storms now and then, a tornado once in a decade somewhere nearby. Yes, it's hot 9 months of the year, but we have AC in our cars, so we drive year round! Friendly: Texans are friendly! (just make sure you're carrying) I've lived all over the country, and many places overseas, I chose to retire here for a reason, it checks all the boxes! Oh, and the Porsche club here is fantastic! longhornpca.org

POST 6Original post

Tennessee.. mix of seasons with virtually no snow or super cold weather.. great roads to drive (tail of dragon area) cheap, etc...

POST 7Original post

Definitely NOT the D.C. area! There are some nice roads a little further out but too few and far between.

POST 8Original post

I would say somewhere in Southern California for the roads and climate. But every city in California has the same problem, its full of Californians.

POST 9Original post

NJ, all traffic moves 25+ mph over the limit so going triple digits doesn't get you in trouble, at least not yet.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 19202602

🤣 We have the same problem in Oregon, full of Californians.

POST 11Original post

Wine Country in Oregon has unbelievable roads. Hills and mountains, twistys everywhere. Incredible food, coffee, drink etc Our politics are horrendous as we are adjacent to Portland, but drive to the beach over mountains within an hour, drive up the cascade range within an hour, or eastern Oregon (desert) in less than two hours. The drives and scenery are second only to Montana, but without harsh weather. Winters are typically 50 degrees and rain. There is a decent Porsche community here, a couple good dealers and Indys as well.

POST 13Original post

California Marin, Sonoma, Napa... Roads are just amazing, weather is mostly nice, food is good, beautiful landscapes...

POST 14Original post

Nobody likes the team in first place, unless you are in/with the first place team. Go California. If it were a country, it would be the 5th largest economy in the world. And, we have awesome roads. Except at commute times. Not sure what cities to call out, but likely most cities(towns) in the Sierra foothills will be less expensive and have great roads.

POST 15Original post

Route 1 south of Monterey is pretty deluxe. Because you can make many wrong turns and end up dead, it is self-policing. But to be honest, where I live in the NW corner of CT is just spectacular. Great twisty roads, little to no enforcement, very little traffic, although an occasional tractor, a local racetrack and an active PCA chapter. There are several good places to store your car in the winter, but no one else is driving theirs in the winter. Almost forgot Laureles Grade in Carmel Valley. Great on a Ducati or Porsche.

POST 16Original post

Definitely not Chicago! Roads suck, traffic sucks, politicians are the lowest form of life, weather now sucks. Great community of car culture, some I like, some meh,,,

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19202862

For my tastes it's too far south. Busy traffic and it's very hot and humid. For Florida you might want to consider up near Mt. Dora. The roads actually have bends in them and there are real hills. Best roads on the East coast would probably be around the Blue Ridge Mountains. Best cities are those that are just within driving distance. Best neighbors are those that are out of sight and out of hearing range. Best climate is the hard one. Not many areas where it is comfortable all year round.

POST 18Original post

We have a vacation property in the mountains of Western NC outside Asheville. There are some amazing roads some of which aren’t heavily travelled. And coming from Florida, I’m always amazed at the relative courtesy of drivers up there. Pleasant people generally speaking.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 19203048

Yep, but we do have some fun here. Come out for a couple track events to participate or just watch. Good group of folks in the PCA Chicago Region. Road America being so close makes up for all of the lousy flat roads and potholes with its views and elevation changes. Makes you happy you live so close. Then winter comes and you are miserable.

POST 20Original post

Los Angeles, specifically the valley area and east. A) The weather is always perfect for most part, just did a nice top down drive today for lunch but B) Angeles Crest is probably some of the best canyon driving roads in the country, dare I even say the world!? (Yeh, gonna get flack for that one). A few weeks ago, a Porsche engine engineer was testing the new Panorama literally from Germany and was carving the canyons in angeles crest. He had driven from Utah on a long term testing mission. If Porsche comes to LA to test their cars, that's gotta mean something He ended up trailing my friend in his GT3 up half the mountain and they pulled over to chat... and I showed up far behind. Super nice guy. What a job! Not a great photo, but I didn't want to be THAT guy snapping pics of the car since it was still all contoured out.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 19203121

Yes, beautiful area. Been through there a few times in the GT3. Went to the Biltmore Inn for a tour and the staff asked me to park the car in front like we owned the place.

Quotes source post: 19202862

Not a thing, although like Chuck Norris says, not many exciting 996 roads down south here in FL... But will probably never sell my home here. But, was contemplating buying another home somewhere else to enjoy during the peak of the heat and Hurricane season... For over a decade kept my rv/toy hauler at Glamis California. I love Cali, to visit. Was out there on average at least 6-8 times thru dune season. Cali is absolutely a beautiful state with mountains ocean and desert. Cali's got it all no doubt and then some. Great roads, maybe some of the best I've ever driven. Although, last winter, driving from Sedona to Flagstaff on 89 was a blast, a 996 road if i ever saw one.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the cost of living in Cali is very high. Also not a fan of its politics/politicians. Its to bad as Cali is a great place. Tx is nice also, Lived in Fort Worth a long time ago. Austin, San Antonio would be the cities I'd consider. Justin, glad You brought up Tenn, its also now on my list. As is NC, maybe around Asheville, as you said Mark D. Marosmith, Wine Country in Oregon sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out... Thanks guys, keep it coming...

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 19203230

Haha, I immediately thought the same thing... San Diego is a pretty good answer plenty of fun roads to drive in north San Diego county and a bit inland.

POST 25Original post

Best road is in Sebring Florida but of course you need to bring your helmet 😀 Rich

POST 26Original post

Upstate SC is great. Road conditions arent always the best however. But cost of living is low. Western NC is fantastic but more pricey. Roads are better. And we have seasons.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19203727

True... Last time I was there, a long while back (2006 ?), Audi just came out with their diesel R10tdi LMP1 V12 twin turbo race cars, dominating Sebring. They sounded incredible... like a huge hoover vacuum on steroids .... Thanks for reminding me, got to hit Sebring this year...

POST 28Original post

Will be at Sebring for PBOC event week after next in my 996 Cup. Still some spots available I believe.

POST 29Original post

I have to say Sacramento California is the best, to the east we have all the twistee and Lake Tahoe, to the south we even more twistee and Yosemite, to the north we have Thunderhill raceway and Lake Shasta, and to the west we have Pacific Coast Hiway, Laguna Seca raceway, the Napa Valley and more twistee getting to them all. that why I own a cabriolet, can't be beat.

POST 30Original post

Any state that has you driving your 996 is the bliss BUT I could say NYC but that’s BS my choice is San Diego I lived there for a year and it’s driving nirvana outside the city

POST 31Original post

+1 to California. From the Bay Area there are countless roads in every direction that are not only fun to drive but also where you can connect with car people. Alices restaurant up on skyline blvd is always fun and not just Porsches but every kind of car (and motor/bike). Then down the hill to Highway 1 is great all the way both north and south with tons of fun places to stop and connect. East into Yosemite is boring until you get into the mountains and then it is absolutely breathtaking. Northeast through gold country on the small roads and small towns is lovely.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 19202902

Other that the good roads and weather, this is generally false and yesterdays news spin to mention California's state of economy. California will have a $150B deficit in 2024. Although I spent a great deal of time in Nor Cal, the absolute best road is Sonoma Raceway. The back roads Monterey south to Malibu are the absolute best. Whether you're hitting 150 on Maricopa Highway, shredding tires on Highway 33, or getting your forearm work out on Decker, Yerba Buena, or Deer Canyon roads, any of these roads please the most avid driver.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 19203294

Everyone thinks where they live is special and it is. However, if a second house is what you want, it depends on how you plan to escape the heat and hurricanes. Driving is a bitch with hurricanes, but if you do, then Georgia and the Carolinas are probably the easiest to reach and property values are not excessive. If you are leaving everything behind, car included, then you can fly anywhere, but I am guessing that you plan to take your car since you are asking about roads. So Georgia and the Carolinas still stand out to me. Nevertheless, driving from southern Florida to Georgia is going to be a long day's drive up 95.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 19205059

I'll echo that. Make the best of where you are and take the time to enjoy it. If you realize and come to grips with the fact that there are always better things out there, you'll always be wasting your time chasing them and losing sight of what you already have. Just sayin.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 19205370

I was speaking more of: Pros- Year round driving No state tax No emissions testing Cheaper fuel and access to 93 octane (west coast doesnt) Porsche Race events at: Sebring, Daytona and HMS Cons- Hurricanes Property tax Tourists - Snow Birds No real seasonal changes Recently with the influx of people escaping certain situations in other states, FLs major cities have a good mix of people. I do like some of the West Coast activities and CA canyon runs are amazing. I just cant get past the stifling politics(yes that was mentioned as criteria). PNW is probably some of the most beautiful scenery in the US but I loathe it. Company I work for based out of Hood River OR and for as much as I love driving on 84, flying into Portland reminds me why I prefer the SE.

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19205370

Got 2, a 996.1 & 996.2... Being retired, 1 car will probably stay at the vacation house. So flying out will probably will be the way no matter where. You're right, unless you leave way in advance, driving out of Florida during a Hurricane warning/watch is a bad idea.

Stay away from Ma. Value... hahaha what is that. MA is like looking at the value proposition of an M96 rebuild and then extending that to most facets of daily life. Some great tracks, roads though, great if you have a rally car. Do you love 36 degrees and raining for half the year... The State knows what's best for you. Special people, I wouldn't say so much friendly. From the places I have traveled, I really like TN, CO, NH ski country, Coast of Maine.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19205485

Agree, lived in western Mass & Bean town for a long time. Born in Worcester. Love the roads up there and in Vermont/NH. The pothole, broken up, ruff twisty back roads let the Porsche's superior suspension shine. Love how a well set up 996 steps over the ruts/holes in perfect control... compared to lesser cars...

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 19205472

you are correct to loathe Portland. It is a cesspool. The unique thing about Oregon is once out of Eugene and Portland you are in a different world. The people, politics, landscape etc geographically no place compares to Oregon especially with regard to the variety. Its still a bit of a secret, but Portland politics are doing their best to ruin the state for everyone else.

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 19205679

I love flying in and seeing Mt Hood or Mt Rainier. Done some hiking around the Gorge.

POST 41Original post

To piggyback on the Oregon comments, I’ll say eastern side of the Cascades is a place to have a 996. Bend, Sun River, et al, have nice weather and all types of roads…no race tracks. Western South Carolina/Greeneville would be my ideal 996 habitat. Just far enough away from Charlotte and Atlanta. Milder climate. Mountains. Strong economy with lower cost of living. Scenic to a fault. Within 4 hours of several real good tracks: Barber, Road Atlanta, Carolina, Roebling.

POST 42Original post

I'm going to vote Lexington, KY, although I'm biased. Located in horse county with gorgeous rilling hills and 45 minutes from Red River Gorge with some fantastic twisting roads and minimal traffic. Combine that with top down weather for 9 months of the year and you can't go wrong.shameless plug for a up and coming marketing group nearby call Backroads of Appalachia , they are making a big push locally to become a premier motorsports destination. Within 4 hours you can be down to the smoky mountains and the Tail of the Dragon. Friendly people as long as respect is mutual here. Politics all depend on which end of the spectrum you align with, but middle of nowhere KY is pretty deep red. And I'll sum it up with there's a great BBQ place in every town, makes for a great day adventure reason to get up and drive. If anyone ever visits this way, I'm happy to recommend routes/food, or show off the state I call home!

Interesting. Just out that way visiting my son for Christmas. My wife wants to move there, but we have yet to find anything to our liking. Then she discovered the cold and has kind of changed her mind.

Yep, Mountains of western North Carolina....Hands down the best! Lived outside Asheville for 34 years! Y'all come back, ya hear!

POST 46Original post

I would say Upstate SC, north Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, western NC and north/central Alabama. All have access to the same great mountain roads and great race tracks like Barber Motorsport Park.

POST 47Original post

For all the shade being thrown at MA, there sure are a lot of us on this forum heh. Still, great roads are all around despite the potholes, but they're far enough from Boston that you might as well be in VT/NH/ME. This thread is turning into "where do I want to drive to next?" Looking like I need to take a trip through Lower Appalachia soon...

POST 48Original post

Definitely not LI NY right now, it's wet and cold and the goddamn road salt they will put down soon is a car killer, sucks here untill March.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 19206673

Best place to own a sports car? San Fran or LA. The BEST roads in the country if not the world can be found outside either of those two areas. Go north young man. All the good roads in the NY area are just north of the city. LI is a sucky place to enjoy a sports car Florida is probably the worst. Flattest state in the country. Not a curved road in sight, horrible drivers, oppressive heat/humidity

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 19207373

This is very true & I appreciate the advice friend, I have also road tripped all over the New England area and its all really good compared to LI, my wife and I love it up there. I have driven either my 996, M3 or Corvette to every state in the New England area and every time it was a blast. My favorite way to get off this island (that I actually really love for everything besides driving) is to drive all the way to the tip of the north fork Orient Point and take the auto ferry to CT.

POST 51Original post

No one is mentioning Louisiana ... well harummph... the roads are terrible, its hot all year round, humidity in the 90% range, poor infrastructure... whats not to like... but on the Pos+ its cheap to live. oh and we have zero bends or curves, we had one in Baton Rouge but they straightened that puppy out...

POST 52Original post

Quotes source post: 19202902

It's hard to complain about anything other than cost of living. I'm in Pasadena and live six minutes from the base of arguably one of the greatest driving roads in the world -- Angeles Crest Highway. Add in roads like Hwy 39 in Azusa, Glendora Mountain Road, all the Malibu canyons and Ojai's truly epic Highway 33 coupled with year-round access, and we've got it made. Not going to touch the political thing with a 1,000 foot pole esp since dude is from Parkland of all places, but YMMV. I guess that's why Orange County exists? I don't know. LA is also impossible to beat on food, non-car things to do and people watching.

POST 53Original post

I like Southern California. How was your New Years Day? Heres what I did. Had to wear a jacket, it was a frigid 55* morning. Do I wish it was cheaper here? Sure, but then even more people would move here.

POST 54 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19207690

Whats wrong with Parkland..? Another wonderful law that will protect all Californians from those evil ICE cars... They're suppose to have them placed at the usual enthusiast roads like Angels Crest. "As of January 1, 2023, California will be placing roadside emissions monitoring devices (REMD) at locations around the state. These devices check emissions on any vehicle that passes it. I lived on Angeles Crest for some time. Not a residence or even an RV mind you, but literally homeless and just doing dispersed camping every night on "the turnout". Drove Crest to work every morning, came "home" every night, and would do full runs 4-5x a week. It was definitely one of the best roads in the country, but after the repaves the grip and feedback from the road aren't as confidence-inspiring anymore. Malibu beats it now (extra scenery too), and I'm pumped to try driving the Dragon in May. Canyon roads aside, LA's a way better metro to have a nice car than the SF Bay Area. Drivers here (the latter) are very distracted as opposed to just aggressive (the former). I'd rather be the subject of a purposeful close shave, than a survivor by pure luck. If you have a highly modified car in LA people give you a wider berth too, which is lovely.

Hard to beat the southeast corner of TN. Great roads in the area of southeast TN, northeast GA and southwest NC. Low cost of living, good weather most of the year not to much traffic, friendly people and no state income tax in TN.

DC area is definitely not the greatest but I've been able to discover some fun roads on the MD side. There are some nice twisty sections going around Sugarloaf Mt and heading towards Point of Rocks. From there you can hop into West Virginia that has an amazing network of roads that are relatively quiet and great for driving. I've driven the entire Skyline Drive as well and there are some great roads on both sides of it. I typically log onto google maps, look for squiggly lines and then go drive the squiggly lines

I have driven up the West Coast and Western Canyons and Mountains, and all over the Appalachian Mountains both ,and they are vastly different.. Both are beautiful in their own way... The West Coast is beautiful scenery with the color of the Pacific Ocean view on one side and the Mountains on the other, the roads are more open feeling with higher speed sweeping turns, even the Canyons roads are more open and long sweeping turns.. The Appalachian Mountain Roads are beautiful high mountainous views and especially beautiful in the fall when all the green leaves are turning orange and red. The roads are literally cut into the mountains with tight radius's and switch-backs and the trees provide a canopy (almost like a tunnel) on most of it or a bluff on one side..The "Dragon" has 318 turns in 11 miles, and wrecks and deaths are regular there ( some due to too much traffic) , but there are 1000's of miles of these roads in the area that are less traffic and not quite as tight a radius..\ I just got back from Gatlinburg , my Son rented a Mountain Cabin for a week to go Snow Skiiing ( I did some Mountain Driving..I don't care for Snow Skiing..lol) Great places to drive a 996 !!

The new Panamera Turbo S E Hybrid is great. Can't wait to get some more wheel time, as I just got to drive for a little bit around Leipzig.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkla...chool_shooting And I've literally never seen an REMD anywhere. I drive all over California for fun and for my job.

POST 61Original post

We have had REMD for quite a few years here in CA run by CARB, but never heard that they were able to take photo like the red light camera.

Certainly not the Pacific Northwest...great twisty roads, pretty scenery but the cost of living is out of control.

Honestly that doesnt necessarily describe the tri county area. The most accidents in Dade, Broward and Monroe counties happen during the peak seasons. While Miami doesnt have the best of drivers, tourists at largest cause of accidents. My insurance premiums went up almost 70% last year and I called USAA to ask why, they said its because of the amount of accidents have gone up substantially since COVID only thing thats changed is the amount of people who have moved to Miami.
