Hi Everyone. Hoping to get some help figuring out
next
steps here. I've been having issue with CEL's for a while. Similar codes, but not always the same. Current codes being thrown are in the image at the bottom. A couple things -
- Engine was recently rebuilt. First vore scoring then big end bearing went. During that time the car sat for a long time with a dead
battery
. The new
battery
installed after that (a year ago) isn't holding charge either, so just ordered a new one. I read in another form this could be a reason it's throwing codes, but doubt it
- Right now it is throwing bank 1, O2-1 (pre cat). Sometimes in throws bank 2 O2-1. Sometimes it's both banks. But it's always these two. I replaced both of the
O2 sensors
with new ones a couple weeks ago. Still getting codes on those. It ALSO throws an MAS code sometimes - P0195
- The car runs sluggish, cuts out at times, just feels like crap. Though, once in a while it's running great. For a half hour after I installed the new
O2 sensors
, it was glorious. Then started again being an
***
again.
The misfire codes seem to be thrown only as a result of the O2 sensor codes. Once on a while they show up. Never on their own. The car runs sluggish, but doesn't really feel like it's misfiring.
- During the whole bore scoring disaster, the car burned quite a bit of oil at times. Could the codes be the result of bad cats, because of that? Anyone have a way to check if the cats are bad before I have to spend $2k or something for new ones? Those these are the pre-cat sensors... do those trigger if a cat is bad?
- There are other weird electrical issues that seem to have happened after the car sat. The radio won't power on. Neither of the heated seat buttons will work. The manual spoiler button doesn't work. Not sure if this is related. I read somewhere that these might need to be turned on at the ECU sometimes after the car sat?
- Car is stock except for IPD plenum./GT3 throttle body. Not sure if this has anything to do with it - maybe the MAS error? I was planning it on returning it to stock next week.
- The car also has a ticking noise which noone can figure out after the rebuild. I don't' think this is related, but who knows at this point. Its not more bore scoring. Tappets were replaced and checked. Been told it might be a top end piston bearing. I have no idea.
It's been an odyssey with this car that started two years ago. First bore scoring. Fixed. Then big end bearing went within 100 miles of the bore scoring fix. Rebuild. Then the noise and these electrical issues. Its a 75k mile car. Very much welcome any help or advice. Thank you!
You could get a Dirametric and clear the codes. My ‘06 Boxster S had my factory cats fail. Can’t recall the codes. Just the two front (cars have 4!) factory cats were $4,500 for parts alone. I already had a Fabspeed catback so I went with Fabspeed race headers ~$2500. This replaced the headers and the front 800 cell factory cats with 200 cell cats. Also had them rework the catback and added their tracktec bypass valves. Glorious sounds now.
My engine was electively rebuilt by Jake Raby at Flat6innovations. Now a 4.3L beast. Highly recommended but he no longer works on motors already rebuilt by others.
Good luck.
Thanks! I have a code reader that lets me clear the codes. Not durametric, just a dongle. Codes always come back, although a mix of different ones every time.
I might go with some
Carnewal
cats and
exhaust
if they're bad. I live in Spain and unfortunately it's a huge pain to fit anything aftermarket on cars here. Requires engineers report and done by a licensed garage. So has to look stock which
Carnewal
does.
