The 996 is a step up from the air-cooled predecessors, but things have changed so much with the newer cars that the ride and performance is astounding.

Read the the thread I've linked to, then do your own due diligence and make sure you speak to some good/recommended Ohlins engineers/distributors (Barry at 3DM was very helpful when I contacted him) rather than relying on individuals hiding behind their keyboards who appear to have some kind of "agenda" or point to prove.

Probably a better question is one of adjustability, overall quality, and what the recommended rebuild times are if you want to understand your true cost.

At best someone may get a ride in someone else's car, but even that isn't a quantitative comparison because no two cars are likely to be set up the same and using the same tires under the same road conditions.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Ultimately I hedged my bets after speaking to two individuals I trust implicitly, one a mate who's been an Ohlins engineer for 10 years now, and the other that is probably the UK's leading and most knowledgeable Ohlins engineer and distributor.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
My 996 has 100k miles on it, I replaced the coffin and lower control arm but the suspension still feels a little "off". Also has worn 615s that will be replaced.
Would the Ohlins R&T be too much for something that is mostly street? It would see a little track time mostly to introduce new drivers to track and if my race cars are broken.
I have 2 Miata race cars that I beat on, so no need to chase lap times with the 996.
Any other options than the Ohlins R&T for street?
$1500 for koni
$2200 for
H&R Street Performance Coil Overs
$3100 for ohlins
Would the Koni setup be much more steerable?
Don't mind paying the extra $1500 if something is much better.
Apples amd oranges....lots of threads in the subject and the reviews r all subjective. Maybe someone is local and can give u a ride.
I track a lot in my ohlin r gt3 spec. i think they r great on the street and r ok on the track but thats the compromise. They r 100000x better then the lowered champion springs and bilsteins that were in the car when i got it.
I agree suspension is personal, a search on Feal 441 and 441 plus of this forum seems more positive on rough road ride. I use Feal 441+ and it's my best coil over exprerience regarding ride, and a better ride than the Votgland Bilstein combo I had. I would only track for DE, but have already done that in my BMW club.
Your best bet is to go to your local Porsche meet and ask for rides to determine your preference
I have Ohlins that were installed at 103k miles the car is beautifully setup for fast street
ride quality is subjective

On a GM car US 04 GTO equivalent my P#**der* coilover experience was "never again" despite Australian rave reviews. My family never got in the car if possible. The topic is subjective. I made my next GM US Chevy SS a magnetic ride car for the family in reaction. I felt spring shock and over haul is not sporty enough for the great 996 chassis. For me Feal 441+ worked out of the box. Just like Kevin
At least for the GT cars the OEM upper camber plates are better than the aftermarket versions. The Porsche Motorsport versions are even better, yet. Maybe someone here can comment on the Carrera camber plates.
The problem with asking the suspension question is that few, if any, have actually tried multiple suspensions to compare them on their cars. At best someone may get a ride in someone else's car, but even that isn't a quantitative comparison because no two cars are likely to be set up the same and using the same tires under the same road conditions.
Probably a better question is one of adjustability, overall quality, and what the recommended rebuild times are if you want to understand your true cost. As a general rule, you get what you pay for.
^^^Marv nails this one.
A couple of us long time owners went to Bilstein PSS9s back in the mid to late 2000s because that was one of the only coilovers available at the time. No Feals, no Ohlins, just PSS9s or various component upgrades from oem. Or you could go all the way to a JRZ or Moton track set-up.
I can't speak highly enough about the PSS9s and PSS10s for dureability and the ability to adjust and dial in the suspension. Havent had a leak or rebuild needed in over 15 years and they still feel like they did when I first dialed them in on the track a long time ago. But i have them lowered and stiff. Dont mind it on the street, but my wife hates it. Today only the PSS10s are available for the 996 Carerra. Difference is 10 adjustments versus 9. If durability is important, take a look at the Bilstein PSS10s. If even more adjustability is important, take a look elsewhere such as the Ohlins. But adjustability is a 2 edged sword. It takes time to dial it in. The more adjustability, potentially more time. But ultimately the more options to get what you want. The company will be able to give you a starting point as a baseline to adjust from.
Guys swear by the Ohlin R&Ts just like they swear by the Feals. We will know in another couple years how durable both are since many of the Rennlisters are now using them. What I like about the Ohlins is that many firms like Tarret are building on the base technology and creating clubsport versions of the R&T. What this tells me is that they believe the Ohlins are good enough to enhance. To me this is a positive endorsement.
Lastly, remember that coilovers provide adjustability in both height and stiffness, which give you an advantage in getting what you want for the street and track. Sway bar enhancements will provide rotation to adjust for understeer and oversteer. Of course, tires are an important component as well.
Good luck.
I have considerable miles under Ohlins in stock form, with uprated spring rates and in whatever
@De Jeeper
's setup consists of.
I do not think you will find a more compliant coilover that is so capable under performance driving. When I had my Ohlins they took me to every track day and then were faster than most other cars on track. When I drive them on the road it was 95% for fun and with the PS4S the car was soooo good on the road. Aaron and I drove his Ohlins from DE to the smokeys, shredded and then drove back and not a single time did I think the ride was too harsh.
If you are driving on the road, just putting around I don't have a good suggestion. But, if you're driving on the road for fun and want to enjoy the track occasionally as well, get the Ohlins.
And don't run them for 15 years without sending them in for a rebuild, you race cars so I am sure I'm not telling you something you don't already know. 3DM services Ohlins, they're really good to work with and have good turn around times. I can give you Barry's contact info if you want to work out an Ohlins setup with him, I'm sure he would be willing to build you something for your use case.
I've had them on my '02 996.2 manual coupe for roughly 4 months now.
I'd heard a lot about them (and some experience of them by way of driving a 987.2 Cayman S with them fitted) being too stiffly sprung, so I was very wary of going with them.
Ultimately I hedged my bets after speaking to two individuals I trust implicitly, one a mate who's been an Ohlins engineer for 10 years now, and the other that is probably the UK's leading and most knowledgeable Ohlins engineer and distributor.
I went ahead and bought a set on the basis I'd specify my own spring rates (which were considerably softer than either of the Ohlins option springs)
The results have been excellent, and I posted my findings here (apologies it's along post) :
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-a-996-c2.html
Judging by some of the responses I've received in the thread I've linked to, it seems I know nothing and /or I've not done the "right thing" and my longstanding mate of 40 years (who's worked in the Ohlins Moto GP squad, the Ohlins World Superbikes squad and in the Ohlins Isle of Man TT squad, and engineers for the current lap record holder) along with another individual who many consider to be the most experienced Ohlins engineer and distributor in the UK, have elected "not to tell me everything"...
All I can say is, the car handles and rides beautifully, and despite some saying the spring rates I planned on using would mean the dampers valving would be well outside it's specified "window", I can adjust the front dampers in a range of 3-4 clicks and make the front end incredibly compliant, or go slightly stiffer and make the front end super-pointy, whilst retaining compliance (I'm in the 12-16 clicks off full stiff range)
The rears are slightly less "tolerant", the window between being underdamped and harsh, is a mere 2-3 clicks, but the 996's rear suspension is not the last word in refinement and lowering it only serves to reduce refinement further still.
OP. That's not aimed at anyone on this particular thread BTW
Good luck with whatever set up you decide upon.
I don't think the Ohlins are harsh. I do think they may produce more noise. I noticed when I have ear plugs in I'm not biased by noise and can better feel what's going on. The ohlins don't have any rubber in series with the spring like the stock system and I think that causes them to produce more noise. I'm pretty sure thats what the rubber is for. These cars naturally have a lot of road noise
Yes, I find the Michelin P4S tires made a significant improvement in both ride and grip.
As you upgrade the suspension you will also find the alignment becomes more critical. You are really fine tuning a system, not just damping or springs.
However, there is a limit to what you can achieve with a 20 year old car. The 996 is a step up from the air-cooled predecessors, but things have changed so much with the newer cars that the ride and performance is astounding. Just keep that in mind as you make changes.
I run these Michelins on everything. Having your alignment done by a 996 rear engine shop I agree totally.
Here is a good reviewer who states in Britain UK roads with a Nikasil bored Harteck/Slakker 3.7 sleeves, providing torque and power, stock was the best suspension.

Many of us are down the GT3 spec Tarret/Elephant rabbit hole. Also are you judging ride for yourself or your passenger. Rare for me to get dates but I lead with my Senator Mag ride (Chevy SS) over the 996.1.
I wouldnt put too much credence in what James says, seems a nice enough chap, but his in depth knowledge of the finer points of vehicle suspension dynamics fall well short of the numerous owners on here who have real world, long term experience of what what works and what doesnt on the 996 platform from a suspension perspective.
I would second this. Car reviewers are notoriously bad gauges of this sort of thing. I like James' content but when it comes to opinions on driving dynamics I'd look elsewhere.
Thanks for the comment, helps me as I do a DD road driving, funny thing over the weekend I was on You Tube and of course
