Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

A few days ago driving the 2006 Cayman S (46K miles), shifting normally from 2nd to third. Nothing happened. Instead it went into 5th gear and no response from the shifter kn ob. Stuck in 5th. I managed to get it back to the crib garage and contacted my Porsche guy about repairing the shifter. he said may only be that the cables are fine, but the bushings and connections to the trans is the problem. I ordered an OEM shift cable just in case. I will have it towed on 11/5 to him. Any thoughts on this???

POST 2Original post

Poke your head under the rear bumper, looking at the right side of the back of the trans. You will see where the two shifter cables connect to the linkage and also a smaller approx 6" link between those two. Feel the ends to see where there is a breakage or disconnection.

POST 3Original post

Hey there, @jimsounddesign ! Welcome to P9. Totally agree with @Apexhunter987 on this. Get under the trans and see if there's any cable play/breakage -- which might quickly help rule things out. Cables do indeed snap on our 987s, especially if they've never been replaced. Be sure you introduce yourself in the New Members section, and post a few photos of your ride. Kind of a long-standing tradition around here as we'd love to see your ride. Cheers and let us know how you get on with the repair.
