Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

My 2006 3.4S on 80k miles suddenly developed a loud /nasty clicking / clanking noise from the rear. Sounded like driver's side (in a UK RHD car). Noise appeared to click / clank once per wheel rotation and vary according to road speed, not engine speed. Dipping the clutch significantly reduced the volume of the noise. The noise is mostly constant but occasionally disappears momentarily and then reappears. Was a bit foxed at first. Jacked the right rear, span the wheel, felt fine. Took wheel off, inspected, no obvious problems. Dropped car back down, moved off and noise much reduced for a bit. Odd. Then I tried the hand brake / e-brake, and - pow! - generated similar but slightly different horrible clanking noise which you could feel through the hand brake. Now, driving along I can modulate the original noise somewhat with the handbrake. So I assume a problem with the hand brake shoes - worn? - or some other component in the handbrake. Is adjusting the hand brake likely to solve this? Thoughts / similar experience anyone? Am a bit confused as to why dipping the clutch would make any difference to noises from the hand brake if that is indeed what it is. If it isn't then I am really stumped as pulling the brake makes a big difference, too, and you can feel it through the handbrake very clearly! Thanks

POST 2Original post

It sounds like a bad wheel bearing or cv joint; either of which you will be able to feel through the handbrake, either one will also be affected by depressing the clutch or applying the handbrake.....

POST 3Original post

I've got the same problem as described by @pothole . Started about a week ago with a faint squeal from the rear and now massive clunking sounds (metal to metal) affecting the frame of the car. It's definitely related to the hand/emergency brake system. Any ideas?

POST 4Original post

You'll have to remove the rear brake rotor to see what's going on. Probably a broken spring or some other part rattling around in there.

POST 5Original post

Did either of you sort this problem ? just happened to mine exactly as stated. i appreciate this is an old thread and not chance much of a reply
