I use a 6 steel rule on floor of the shift console to check the throw/movement and mark the shifter console with dots made with a Sharpie to show the neutral point, the maximum travel in 3rd and the maximum travel in 4th.

Suggestion
Any shifts trying to find gears whilst stationary with the engine not running, should be done with the clutch pressed down, as forcing the lever into gears rarely gives a sweet shift action until both cables are correctly adjusted/aligned.
Leading evidence: 'Use 6 steel rule' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust /aligned' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So it's really a case of finding the balance/ sweet spot between the two maximum fore and aft travel positions, and the same applies to the across gate settings, but rather than try and balance them all in one go, it's easier to rely on the transmission itself finding the natural 3rd/4th gate, then adjusting the fore and aft balance in that plane, before moving onto the side to side adjustment.

Do I also need to adjust the left/right end as well?

I prefer to adjust the shift cables with the shiftknob in place as it gives you better feel and more leverage.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am trying to diagnose an issue with going in to 1st gear and would like to know what the cable adjustment does aside from aligning the shifter in the neutral position? The fore and aft adjustment was all the way out when I took the console out to install a short shifter. I moved this cable end to be shorter a few notches. Do I also need to adjust the left/right end as well? What does the affect aside from neutral lever position?
Thats true but my understanding is that is really the only way to be 100% on zero for the actual mounting of the ends because the throw should be based on the mounting point. Im not home until March but theyre sub $20, otherwise Id send you mine to confirm. If anything its just a quick step to rule out an alignment issue since it mounts on the shifter frame.
I take it this is a new/recent install of a short shifter kit ? If so, was the shift action fine prior to fitting the short-shift kit ?
Any shifts trying to find gears whilst stationary with the engine not running, should be done with the clutch pressed down, as forcing the lever into gears rarely gives a sweet shift action until both cables are correctly adjusted/aligned.
Also make sure the cables are correctly located in their guides on the transmission itself, before you attempt any adjustments ...
I prefer to adjust the shift cables with the shiftknob in place as it gives you better feel and more leverage.
If the green set up jig wont fit your short shift (and looking at it, it wont) the whole process has to be done by trial and error.
Disconnect the blue LH cable altogether. This should allow blue cable should find the 3/4 gate in the transmission automatically.
Now adjust the black (RH) cable adjuster so it provides equal travel both into 3rd and 4th gears. I use a 6 steel rule on floor of the shift console to check the throw/movement and mark the shifter console with dots made with a Sharpie to show the neutral point, the maximum travel in 3rd and the maximum travel in 4th. Mark these three points wherever the tips of the levers sticking out of the adjusters end up.
Note this is the blue LH cable, you'll be doing this with the black RH cable first.
If the travel is not equal, move the cable end in or out of its it's adjustment slot until they are.
Thats the basic set up of the fore and aft throw adjustment.
Once this is done, secure the adjuster with the spring loaded sleeve, and move onto the blue LH cable adjuster.
Start with the cable backed as far out of the adjuster as it will go (ie so its effectively as long as the cable and the blue link can be made) then try to find all the gears across all four gates 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and reverse. Clutch pressed down, and dont force them in (because you shouldnt need to)
In my experience it takes some trial and error, and even moving the cable ends one notch in the adjusters can make a big difference as to whether you can access all four gates smoothly and easily.
You should find that if you can get the 1/2, 3/4 & 5/6 gates, reverse should also engage easily.
Try the above procedure and let us know how you get on.
Thank you very much for the detailed reply. The car came to me with a very worn out eBay short shifter and wallored out plastic side lever. I was having issues getting in to first gear, even at a stop. I always press the clutch in when trying the gears with engine off. When I did the fluid a few weeks ago the cable attachments on the tranny looked secure in their brackets to me.
I will try the adjustment mentioned below. One question I have is on the "travel is equal" portion. The adjustment moves the shifter the same both ways, no? What I am seeing is whatever adjustment I make it doesn't seem to enter a gear sooner than before if that makes sense.
My take on the "travel is equal" situation is this : If you adjust the fore and aft cable one way or another, you increase the travel into say 3rd gear, whilst decreasing the travel available to select 4th gear, hence why they need to be equal.
Of course the increase in travel into 3rd isn't noticeable (unless it was so far out of adjustment it was barely going in/wasn't going in previously) because the lever on the transmission, can only go so far before it reaches the mechanical limit of it's travel within the transmission itself, whereas the lack of travel in selecting 4th manifests itself as a horribly spongy feeling as the cable and shift mechanism reach the end of their travel before the gear is fully selected in the transmission itself ...
Thank you for explaining that. I figured the transmission has its own internal stops as they are very obviously felt at the shifter. My car has 95k miles on it and several track sessions so most likely it is not the shifter causing problems. I will keep making adjustments to see if I can find a sweet spot. The shift **** is off because I painted the U shape trim and did not want it to get damaged on the batwing part of the console moving it around.
Yes the transmission internals will stop moving eventually but you want the lever at the other end of the cable to be able to move those internal far enough to ensure full engagement. Two separate animals.
Thanks. I have not felt any issues with lack of cable movement aside from reverse. Moving the left blue cable adjuster to the extreme short setting did prevent the shifter from engaging 2nd gear, however. That was just an experiment. I moved the adjusters back to about where they were when I drove it last. I will try the middle/equal setting locations again and go for a drive.
I had this issue when I got the vehicle....3rd doesnt always go in on upshift when its warmed up....It goes in fine when its cold (start up driving)....I installed a short shifter and I knew it would end slop but prob not the issue itself....same
