First off, I’m not super worried about this, but seems like a new
pdk
behavior, So just thought I’d check with the collective.
About 1 out two weeks ago, I started noticing that the first couple of shifts into 2nd gear the engine revs rise between 100-200 rpm as if it is in neutral between gears, or probably more accurately, the clutch handoff has a small delay. This happens in both auto and manual modes. I am driving gently as the car is cold and I’m in a residential area early in the morning (but happens after work, as well).
After a couple of shifts, it behaves as expected and shifts are smooth and satisfying after that regardless of how aggressively I’m pushing the right pedal.
It might happen between 3rd and 4th, but I’m usually driving through a residential area, and don’t get up to speed before it returns to “normal”.
Just curious if this is indicative of anything. I didn’t find much searching the webs and forums.
Thanks!
Either the clutch is engaging slowly or the clutches are slipping.
When was the fluid last changed?
The
PDK
can be a little clunky when cold. But depending on your miles I would do a clutch fluid and gear oil drain and fill. It can only help. I am at 47k and have done two clutch fluids and one gear oil. Super easy for me to do on jack stands.
Forgot to mention that, but
pdk
fluid was changed at around 60k miles (before my ownership). At 72k miles now. I don’t have perfect records of everything done, though.
It's completely normal. Mine did the same thing the entire 10 years I owned it.
Mine was really noticeable when cold and first driving off in first gear after backing out of my garage
There was a significant clutch slipping feeling as I gradually accelerated in first gear, but all of this goes away as soon as everything is warmed up
Keep in mind a
PDK
is not a regular automatic transmission.
There is no torque converter, so it's essentially a manual gearbox with dual electronic computer controlled clutches, so it's behavior is more typical of a manual.
Stomp the accelerator to the floor from a dead stop when fully warmed up, and you will notice a fraction of a second lag where the car hesitates before the car starts moving, more like a manual where you are gradually letting the clutch out slipping it a bit to get the car moving without stalling
Very different than a torque converter automatic which is already ready to go and will snap your neck back instantly
this is my second dual clutch equipped car, the first being an Audi with a DSG transmission of a similar vintage. When cold, that thing is brutal with near violent shifts into first off a stop.
The PDK programming is better in every regard.
Our symptoms are slightly different in that I get slipping between gears from 1 to 2 (and now confirmed between 3 and 4), but no apparent slipping while in any gear.
it sounds like this isn’t out of the ordinary for this transmission, and I’ll continue not to worry about, but simply keep an on it as it is a new addition to the driving character of the car.
One caveat in my case that I didn't mention previously is that I manually shifted my car 100% of the time. Not sure if you are using full auto mode or not, but if you have, then you have already realized that the factory programming will practically have the car in 5th gear in a parking garage while barely moving!
Even when cold, I would shift at a safe for the engine temp, but much higher RPM than auto mode would ever do, so Im wondering if that would have any influence on me getting or noticing any potential cold slippage as I went through the gears?
In other words is it made more noticeable if using full auto as the car is essentially "lugging" itself along because of the terrible programming that is all about fuel economy for the Govt overlords? Easy enough to test if so.
Could be because I only use manual when it’s fully warm and I am on those mountain twisties. To get there I am in auto. But after 2-3 min my car feels fine, it’s just that initial reverse out of the drive way and first few stops.
Well, since I started this thread, I learned that the
Foxwell NT530
I used to own apparently disabled the sport/sport + functionality while I was troubleshooting something else. Not sure, the timing was fairly coincidental on that. I had to go back to the
Porsche
dealer to get that re-enabled, and I’ll be seeing if that somehow has an effect on the shifting. It has been relatively warm here lately, and it has not even been 48hours since the dealer visit, but things seem better in the 1/2 shift regard. I’ll have to wait until it gets cold again to see if there is a meaningful improvement.
I’ve since returned that
nt530
as I can’t trust it not to mess other things up and don’t want to drop $300 an hour at the
Porsche
dealership again.
