Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For me it was a 911 after an 'interesting' passenger ride with a colleague plus it is a car that presents a challenge/risk when pushing on. So how did you end up with a Porsche?

POST 2Original post

I always had hot hatches and JDM cars when I was in my twenties. Then once I had enough cash scrabbled together a 911 felt like the next natural progression that I had to try. It was a leggy 996 with clear fried eggs and I loved it. Been driving 911s or Caymans ever since!

POST 3Original post

I had been without a “toy” in the garage for a year or two. Then my mate asked me to take him pick a Tiger kit car up. I took him and I later drove it and he said I should get one. I’d always fancied a caterham so went and test drove one. Loved it but it was slow as it was a 270 model. Looking in the showroom at a 420 but it was £40 odd thousand. A lot of money for a bath tub on wheels that the Mrs wouldn’t really go out in. But if I got a GT4 we could do road trips, trackdays and everything… Plus it was my first Porsche, first proper engine and my uncle always gave me 1:43 Porsche models with a magazine as a kid. Me and my mates have a saying “no time for games” when we make daft decisions. So that is how I went from a £7k car to a £70k one and my first Porsche

POST 4Original post

I got dumped by a girlfriend (having wasted 18 months dealing with her rather challenging ways) and I thought “f k it” and went and bought a 2002 Boxster 986 (this was back in 2010) and signed up to a bunch of dating apps same time…happy days

POST 5Original post

I was looking for a two seater sports car to share with my father ... we were looking at Lotus Eclat / Elise / Esprit ... and went to look at a 924 in the showroom at JCT600 near Yeadon (Leeds). I still remember the test drive, I was sitting in the back of the 924 with Allan Lindley driving ... it was memorable and we bought it !!! Metallic blue with a brown pinstripe interior ... and black painted wheels.

POST 6Original post

Condorman car chase first sighting, followed by Athena poster on the wall, I can even remember getting the bus to get it at the city centre and being so excited. God I’m old..

POST 7Original post

Always wanted one after seeing my dad’s friends 996 turbo in 2004. Went in to buy my own 987.1 in 2008. Bloody thing bore scored and I swore I would never buy another Porsche. Currently have a 996 turbo on K24 turbos running 600ish BHP. It’s a bloody rocket ship. Next car is either a 991S, 718S or an Alfa Romeo Gulia Quad.

POST 9Original post

My late father went to buy a company car but came home with a 964 RS for himself, as you do! As a 10yo. that car was hugely impressionable on me. From that point on, they became a mainstay in the family and was what got my brother and i hooked on everything cars. That was 30+ years ago. Fast forward to today and this December i will be the same age as he was when he bought that 964, hopefully with a newly spec'd GT3 delivered.

POST 10Original post

I had just sold a property, banked a nice profit, and fancied a change, it was a very enjoyable 18 months /20k miles….i would love another at some point, but life gets in the way.

POST 11Original post

very young. Back in the 80s there was a Porsche deaership open in Maidstone. After weeks, possibly years of begging Dad finally took me there. And down a ramp, in the semi-gloom were second hand cars. 924,944,928. Fabulous, and so very exotic to me When I was 10, for one holiday I **was** a 911 Turbo. Reversing into bed, getting over-steery in the playground, and turbo boosting past my Sister and her dolls. You could say I was smitten from an early age. Finance has never allowed me to have many of then, or the very exotic ones, but the desire has always been there

POST 12Original post

Now I am quite old. 924 Carrera GT was my first Porsche, bought from a Porsche dealer in Chelsea, cannot remember the name. Mine was black with the red decals, SNG 91W. This was the inspiration: Still got the Mag, sadly not still got the car. In its day it was a superb car, quick and effortless. I was in my early 20’s then so quite a big purchase, it cost the same as my first house!!!! Which has pretty much been the theme of my car life since, my car fleet has often been worth more than my house . Let’s face it you have to have your priorities right. Sorry about the crappy picture, no phone cameras in those days. Owned Porsche’s almost continuously since then, often more than one. You could call me a lifer. Well right up to the point where my local OPC decided I wasn’t a worthy customer any more. It did stick in the throat a bit when some 30 something sales t t was telling me I wasn’t worthy of a 991.2 GT3 allocation. Still I bought my R8 RWS instead which I love to bits and hope to run forever.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Same here, back in the day the group of local kids we used to play football on a quiet side road and the much older sister of one kids had a boyfriend with a banana yellow whale tail 911 who used to park on this road. Saw that car a lot, took another 30+ years till I had my chance at owning a 911 but not banana yellow.

POST 14Original post

Some cracking stories here! I bought a second hand 996 C4S in 2007 following a divorce. I had orginally bought a Maserati 4200GT but got a letter from her solicitor threatening to freeze all assets if I continued spending money on fast depreciating Italian sports cars. So I swapped it for a slower depreciating German one.

POST 15Original post

Because I wanted something that wasn't a Fiesta or a Metro as my first car and it was there as a trade in at the garage I worked at. It was a red 924 and since then I have pretty much always had a Porsche in my life. I currently have a 992 Targa 4S.

POST 16Original post

swanseaboydan said: My wife wanted one . .. Same here. I've had a variety of sporty cars over the years and most recently I had a couple of Morgans - as I wanted something different. I bought a new Aero +8 (4.8 V8) which was a gentleman's hot rod. Mrs NDA was incredibly stoic for many years and endured a couple of trips around France in it. Not really a car for 2,500 mile road trips to be honest. She started mentioning Porsche's, so I bought a C4S Cabriolet last year. It's probably the most complete GT car I've owned - it feels cleverly evolved and is perfect for my usage which is a month in Provence every year. I am really enjoying it.

POST 17Original post

Growing up I loved motorsports & Porsche were the most successful Le Mans team.... soooooo. It's still one of the things I really love about the brand; seeing all the racing tech making its way into the road cars.

POST 18Original post

She’s had 2 macans and a cayenne and we’ve never had a problem with any of them. I’ve had a targa gts - same- lovely car but just a bit uncomfortable for me .

On the run up to my 50th birthday, my wife insisted.

POST 20Original post

POST 21Original post

First Matchbox car was a brown 911. Birthday trip to see Condorman shortly after sealed the deal. Wanted one ever since. Bought first Porsche in 2009 (2005 Boxster S). Finally achieved my boyhood dream of owning a 911 in 2023.

POST 22Original post

Because life is too short, I'd spent over three decades being fairly sensible and with our daughter grown up we could live with just two seats. A winding trail of research via Aston, Jaguar etc. finally landed me at the doors of Porsche. So far a great decision.

POST 23Original post

1. I saw a 993 one night and fell in love with the shape. 2. Everyone should own a 911 before they die. 2004 I bought a 993.

POST 24Original post

POST 25Original post

I was in a 1998 MGF bought new (God I’m also old) but always wanted to know what the fuss was about re Porsches. Test drove a Boxster S and suddenly it all made sense. Part ex plus sale of Lehman shares got me into said Boxster S; subsequently a 996TT and a magnificent 997 GTS… now in a Panamera GTS: wife & mother happy, my cricket bag fits plus the car holds its own easily on European driving tours…pride & joy or what

POST 26Original post

Condorman made a lasting impression on me too! I thought the baddies’ 911s looked so much cooler than the hero’s car… Then my 911 love lay dormant until just over 10 years ago I was considering buying a second hand Ford or BMW and a mate at work told me I should buy a 911 instead. He explained a good 996 could be had for £12k at that point….i spent a few grand more than that, but been in a 911 since then!

POST 27Original post

I wanted to buy my first sports car - specifically a BMW Z4. The local BMW dealer didn’t take me seriously and my ‘test drive’ was maybe 500m down a straight bit of road. I went almost next door to Porsche to have a look at the Boxster, and ended up having an hour test driving one, wjth the salesman encouraging me to really drive it! I was blown away. Sadly I couldn’t afford the 987 I tried but did buy a 986 straight after. I went back to the dealer 2 years later when I could afford a 987 and bought a lovely 987 S Sport edition. If the OPC hadn’t taken the time to show how good the Boxster was, I might never have bought one.

POST 28Original post

[quote=supersport] Same here. God I’m old too. Still look cool to me today! I lost my Dad recently and it’s a bit dusty here, very fond memories he didn’t laugh much but the walking stick machine gun scene made him laugh out loud. It’s amazing how some things stick in the memory.

POST 30Original post

I wanted a fast manual sports car (bought a 997 GT2, drove it 10k km in 4 months during winter and then totalled it just when spring was starting). Needed to take a break from cars that look like a GT2 for a few years after that so my parents don’t die of a heart attack and then bought a 997 RS to get that feeling back without the turbos …

My 16 year-old self swore that he would have a Porsche one day, and many years later I was finally able to fulfil his dream. At the time it was a 911, but they have changed so much that my car of choice was now a Cayman.

I was moving to Germany in 1995 to run a department - a big step up. I had a Lotus Elan SE in the UK. I fancied something more grown-up. In the 80s/90s, 911s were seen as yuppie tosser cars in the UK. In Germany, there was no stigma - the perfect time to buy one. Derestricted Autobahns were another draw. I bought a 993 Carrera in a midnight blue. Lovely thing. I dailied it, commuting into Frankfurt. My journey home had a stretch of motorway. Most days, I'd hit 250kph. It was hilarious in the snow, even on winter tyres. Spent more time looking out of the side windows than the windscreen. Build quality felt bulletproof. Totally solid, almost machined from billet. It could take any punishment I could mete out. The switchgear was an ergonomic mess but, once I got used to it, it didn't bother me. However, that was my first and - so far - only Porsche. It seems to have scratched that itch. A 992 Touring in Oak Green might tempt me... I can see me getting my wife an electric Macan when her Tesla dies,

Either that stigma has gone or I don't give a toss any more. I suspect the latter. I have been musing recently about what direction my modest car history might have taken if I'd thrown the money at Porsche rather than Aston, Bentley, Lambo etc? I am feeling a little regret that I didn't get into them earlier.

That’s interesting I have no yuppie recollection, I think more racing cars festooned in Martini stickers or Rothmans rally livery. Just remembered I got Scalextrix 24 hrs one Christmas with black and a gold 911’s. Proof marketing works.

POST 39Original post

I'd always wanted one since being a kid and writing to Porsche GB to request printed brochures, which I tended to turn into posters that adorned my bedroom walls. I finally got my first in 2014 and made a huge hash of it. I was in the USA working on a cruise ship and bought it unseen from an Autotrader advert. It was a black 944 S2, a late 'J' plate one with the bridge spoiler. It looked mint in the photos, I asked a few questions and took the plunge, despite being 3,500 miles away. I roped my late dad into going to collect it from London. (Thanks, dad). I then had an unbearable 6 weeks to wait until I was done with my ship contract, knowing that my first Porsche was sitting back in the UK waiting for me. Well...it was a bit of a letdown, due to my extraordinary stupidity and childish excitement getting the better of me. It was on mixed budget tyres, had a dent that had not been visible in the photos and was generally pretty tatty. A London car, sold by a wideboy. I ended up getting shot of it after 6 weeks, after several issues and a wallet-draining July. It didn't put me off, though. Later on, I got a 987, and now I have a 981S.

I'd always liked Porsche but it never 'clicked' in my head that I should buy one. I went in and ordered a Taycan Turbo S as I thought I'd push the boat out through the company using man maths. When I was there I saw a nice 911 Turbo S Cab in the showroom and somehow ended up coming home in that so went from zero to two of them in the space of about 20 minutes.

POST 41Original post

In brief, I saw a 996 on FB for about £9k. Was warned about the problems with such a cheap one. After a bit of Autotrader, sprinkled with a bit of manmaths, I ended up buying a 996 Turbo.

My first Porsche in the 90s was a decision to switch from 2 wheels to 4 when I came across a fatal bike crash when hooning around one weekend on my Ducati. I'd got away with some very stupid things on sportbikes but that was the moment I realised it could easily have been me. Haven't regretted the move.

Watching the C4 tv show on classic cars with Jodie and Quentin, he mentions summat along the lines of about 25k buying a 993. Mrs B and I looked at each other in surprise, so I loaded up autotrader on the laptop as soon as he finished speaking. Well, by now, since filming- 25k most certainly did not buy a 993, AT had them all around 50k! So what could I get for 25? Enter the 997. I found one in the PH classifieds with a recent Hartech rebuild and (despite intending to keep it a year or do) I still have it

Back in the late 70’s Dad bought a 2.2 E in black from the local auction. He fell in love with it, as did I albeit I was only in my 2nd year of driving, so to drive a 911 at 18/19 was quite something, still is. Dad then decided he wanted a newer 911 so we went to Dick Lovett’s then in Marlborough to look at a white SC. In the corner of the showroom was a gorgeous 3.3 turbo 4sp in Minerva blue, blue interior. I kept nudging him, saying that one, that one. Think it was about 5k more than the SC though, 13k maybe?? Anyway, we went out for a test run, all 6’ 2” of me crammed in the back, sold. What a Car. Dad let me drive it occasionally, acceleration was other worldly, a series of 4 rushes I “borrowed” it when M & D went on Hols to see a mate in Banbury, got pulled by plod in an SD1 just north of the A303 A 34 junction, copper was a decent type, only booking me for 94 I am now on my 3rd 911, epic cars nothing else quite like them IMO.

My Grandparents lived near a garage called Glenvaragill in Edinburgh. So when I visited I would go for a walk with my grandpa and my treat was popping in the dealer on the way home and looking at, maybe sitting in the cars. They sold Ferrari's and Porsche's, also Jeeps. This was around the 964 and 993 era, absolutely loved them and would raid the brochure stand and look at them for hours. A 964 would be a dream but felt it was a bit old so I got a 997 2 years ago.

Condorman. That's a blast from the past. The flatnose with the guy with the silver eye. Remember it well. For me, it was the 1981 British GP when my Dad's business partner turned up in a new white 928 with the pascha interior. Then, a few years later, we had Monarch Porsche in Warwick and as I was cycling past one day, a silver 959 was being unloaded. Being a massive petrol head, those moments stick. In the early 2000's, weekends at the Ring cemented the desire to own a Porsche and getting pax laps on Scuderia Hanseat days and TF days in some lovely 911's affirned the desire. I've only recently bought my first Porsche, but it's fantastic and everything I'd hoped it would be. A lifelong ambition fulfilled.

I don't do big miles and I can charge at home so it's the obvious choice for day to day; nothing covers ground more quickly and easily in comfort while having decent storage and room for the kids etc. It's been in more than I would have liked with software updates and a recall on the brakes but it's been infinitely more reliable than the first 4S I had back in 2021 which had heater problems and was off the road a fair bit. I'd like to think they've got their act together on them now.

Well In 2003 I bought an Impreza STi type UK brand new and they convinced me to buy return to invoice insurance that would start in the second year of ownership and run for three years. In 2007 when the car was four and a half years old, it got stolen. Insurance payed out and the RTI insurance made up the difference between what I paid for the car and what the insurance payed. So there I was with £25K cash. My Dad had bought an 89 3.2 Carrera in 1992, but then started to work abroad and only had time to keep it serviced and run every few months so that in 2007, it had only done 15K miles with a FPSH. Returning to the UK finally, he bought a 997 and I bought his 3.2 for what the dealer was offering. So, my 3.2 has now been in the family for 33 years

POST 53Original post

As a 70s kid, bedroom posters were Countach, 308 and 928, and I had a Matchbox version of each too. About 30 years later, looking for a replacement for my Subaru a pristine 944S2 came up locally, and I realised that as a 2+2 it would be fine with 2 kids. Missed it by a day - just couldn’t get the cash quick enough. Forward a further 5 years, a third child, and a house move later, I finally had the funds to go looking again but all the local 944 stock had disappeared. Another PHer was looking to sell his manual 928S4, so a deal was done and I owned the poster car! Had that for just over 5 years before it was rear-ended and written off. Insurance paid out quick so money was spent quick, before it could be, ahem, reallocated. Currently the third owner of a 1993 968, which is so much fun, though the idea of forced induction just won’t quite leave…

I have posted this before but when I was growing up in the 70s, the son of the builder made good who lived at the end of our road (he built lots of decent family homes and saved the best plot for himself) had a fab mid 70s 911. I used to stand and gaze at it. I always had a bit of want there but other car adventures and then family meant that it wasn't an option Even when it became a bit of an option, my naturally cautious nature meant that the type of cars in my budget (996/997.1) came with a risk, however small of huge engine bills and I couldn't risk that. Then cancer came along and took my wife when she was barely 50. I'd had the rainy day, so didn't need to save lots of money any more so bought a 991 C4S. It's very nice but as I'm sure you realise, I wish I had done it years before.

Always a car person, usual 911 Turbo poster on the wall, ended up working in the motor trade for a while including at a couple of Porsche dealerships around the time the 944 S2 was released - so that was when I first drove a Porsche. Eventually most of my work then became European based so ditched the company cars to give me some better choices - in 1996 I bought a 1 year old, 3000 mile, black 968 Club Sport from JCT600 in Yeadon as my only car. In those days Porsches were for driving! Did 30k miles in it before swapping for a couple of 986 Boxsters. Now have an SRS which will be last Porsche run alongside a GRY - perfect pair for me.

The Turbo is the sensible option. Once you go down the rabbit hole this is what you realise. I started at 996 targa as I was looking for a replacement for the r230 I sold. The logical conclusion ends up being 996 turbo. Its such an odd market the cars literally do not sell for months but the dealers are unwilling to budge on the price, I am waiting for the darker months to make an offer

A 1:18 Bburago 911 in dark blue was a personal favourite and I'd sit and just hold it and look at it from different angles. Soon my bedroom had shelves with every toy Porsche I could find on. Posters everywhere, and regular trips to the local dealer to sweep up all the brochures. My mum sewing Porsche badges on to random jumpers and coats... Then in 1981 I saw a 924 Carrera GT parked up outside B&Q and I made my dad turn round to go look again as I knew there were only 75 in the UK (at 9 yrs old!) The owner came back and he lifted the bonnet so my dad could make the approving noises and then the bloke offered me a ride! and my mum/dad let me! just a quick up and down the dual carriageway... now I wanted one of them badly...(still do sort of). I can't remember how, but I wrote that owner a thank you letter, (as you did back in the day) and he replied with a photo of his Rolls Royce which had an airbrushed scene down the side, and an offer for another ride in the 924, this time on his private estate?!.... my mum drew the line at that though . Turned out he was the owner of Badger airbrushes... I started writing to Ferry Porsche who would reply (in German ffs). I got a Saturday job cleaning up at the local dealer....and time moved on. It wasn't until I was 31 that I decided to just do it and whilst I could never afford the good stuff let alone a Carrera GT.... I could get myself a decent 10yr old 944 Turbo.....(which if I squinted was a CGT) and I was very much satisfied. MO30 suspension, aero mirrors and door handles, Titanium over linen leather[/footnote] "Smash-ups"... I loved playing that! We called it "smash-Ups" as well.. I remember being beyond excited when Hot Wheels Crack-Ups came out in 85... i was 9. Next level smash-ups.

This time last year I had an ‘87 Carerra 3.2 which was my first 911 in 8 years…in Feb of this year I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (on my 65th birthday) and panicked and sold the 3.2 to the first buyer who saw it, my reasoning being that I didn’t want my wife to have to deal with any hassle if things didn’t work out in the coming months. After a load of scans etc my surgery was scheduled for May but a few weeks after selling the 3.2 my wife basically told me to go buy another car as in her words “You’re a hopeless t t without a toy in the garage and you need something to get you out of bed post-op even if you only go and stare at it” I duly started to search and very quickly decided another air-cooled 911 was what I wanted and I found a 993 Targa manual in the rare and fetching hue of Wimbledon Green. Surgery was pretty successful and with most of the tumours were removed I was discharged after 2 weeks to begin the recovery process and venture into the garage occasionally (frequently in reaility) and dream about driving the Targa. My mates from my Mercedes days had a trip planned late July to Europe including taking in various Swiss mountain passes and a stop off at Stuttgart and somehow I got myself fit enough to join them, covering 2,000m over 6 days with many laughs and shared experiences along the way. Porsche…best cure I know!

So, This is me, at 29,( thirty six years ago ! ) trying to look cool in my blouson jacket with my first Porsche, a 1959, 356A which I bought for the princely sum of £11,950 ( would probably cost in the region of £135,000 now ) - as a stroke of good fortune, the month after I bought my car the 356 International was taking place in Harrogate, about sixty miles from where I live, so three fabulous days in the company of about a hundred and fifty 356's driving around the Yorkshire Dales. Once I was on the slippery slope it was difficult to get off and since then I've had sixty seven Porsches including forty three 911's and seventeen 356's. Presently have a fully restored early 911T and a 981 Boxster S, debating selling the 911 as I don't drive it enough, but I know I'd regret it ! What a journey. Which was your favourite 911 and 356 ? Friend of mine has a very original 1970 T which he absolutely loves and thinks is a very underrated car...I think in general people don't appreciate how good to drive the early cars are. I had four 911 RS 2.7's which were pretty good , but I think the best 911 I had was a G50 3.2 Carrera . Regarding 356's , I had quite a lot including three Speedsters, I owned one which had been completely restored by Eddie Shah ( the guy who owned the Independent newspaper ) and that drove really well. Not sure if I should mention it on this page, but my all time favourite sports car would definitely be my Lotus Elise 220SC - the last car I'd ever sell !

My Porsche obsession started at school in the mid to late 70's, every year I used to save up my pocket money to buy a new copy of The Observers Book Of Automobiles (which I still have) where you could see all manner of exotica, but I saw these strange Beetle looking cars which went fast...I liked them very much. Roll on a couple of years and during the massive explosion of rental video's the owner of the video shop near the school bought a black 911SC which had a bloody big spoiler on the back...I couldn't wait to go and see it every lunch time when we walked past, it was at that time the seed was planted. Things became worse when I went on a school trip to Germany...and as you could imagine its was full of Porsche's, I was in heaven. When I started working all I wanted was a Porsche it was my dream car but I simply couldn't afford one...thirty odd years later I got a promotion at work which gave me the funds to finally be able to buy and run a Porsche. As much as I loved the 930 911 when I read Autocar's review of the then newly launched Cayman that was the one I wanted...a two seater mid engined Porsche this car blew my socks off. I bought my 2009 Guards Red 987.2 Cayman S in 2011 it had covered just 4500 miles, fourteen years later I still have it, its now covered 21000 miles and I still think its amazing...summer use only and cherished beyond belief.

POST 79Original post

A 911 has always been my dream car, particularly a Guards Red 930, which was the ultimate 911 at the time. I had the Matchbox models, brochures, posters etc. when growing up. It was always a "one day" dream and I found excuses for not making it a reality. Don't fit in G series, engine concerns on 996/997, 991 too expensive, very happy with my E46 convertible. And then.......... Mortgage paid, son through uni, doing OK at work, mum and dad sadly died (prematurely ). The reality of life not being a rehearsal hits. Bought my first Porsche, the 911, last year and absolutely adore it.

Long history with BMW M cars. Went to the Ring in 2006 with a brand new E63 M6. Not a great track car as it happened. When I was there my instructor got me a pax lap in a race -prepared 996 GT3. I got it immediately. On the way home to Canada I was sitting in Frankfurt airport and picked up a magazine , (Total 911). The lead article was a review of the new 997 GT3RS written by some chap called Chris Harris. Man, I wanted that car so much. On return to Canada I went to the Porsche dealer, a complete stranger. " I would like to order a GT3RS, Please" Silence. Politely, the rep told me that they were all sold. "No problem, I'll have one for next year". Also sold. The 7.1RS was a bit of an experiment for Porsche as they were not sure it would sell in North America so they only brought in about 550 of them, 50 in to Canada. I moved mourned that dealership for months, seeing the odd RS come through for delivery. One day I got a call from the rep and she said: "Cancellation a few minutes ago on an RS....you have virtually no time if you want it." I called the bank and had them get the payment organized that day. Car was insured, plated and delivered next day. I have a few Porsches now, including the first one, so I went from zero to an RS by pure luck with no prior history. Further mow they revised the price downwards dud to favourable currency fluctuations. Was a different time. Delivery day from my rep below: Not as quick as my recent cars, but still a simple manual with great hydraulic steering and no nannies:

I was the owner of a DB7 v12 at the time a friend had a 928s which i was a passenger in several times before i bought my own 928s. I kept both for over 20 years before selling them and buying a 991.

Had a couple of nice cars in my twenties (Uno Turbo ie, Integrale 8v) then got company cars ever since. I was single(ish) until 2003 when I met my now wife who was divorced with 2 young children. After a couple of years setting up together, selling 3 properties to get a family home, I decided I needed to spend some money on me rather than everyone else. A 911 seemed the obvious safe choice, also looked at M3s and DB7s, but eventually a 996 Millennium found it's way into the garage purely as a fun car. A strange and unloved 911, probably the only limited edition 911 which has never attracted a premium. They were turbo money when new with every bit of optional equipment thrown at them, including dubious chrome wheels. Limited to 911 worldwide, a very rare car nowadays. Decided after 2 years it wasn't the car for me as I wanted to move into a less touring and more sporting direction and have been in Caymans ever since. Currently have a modified 981GT4 which is a bit of a handful on the road but great fun on track.

I had almost exactly the same call - but about a Bentley GTC, the first version of the W12 Continental. They had just launched.... I was on a golf course when the call came through and I had to decide there and then.

TLDR: By accident. 19+ years on, I still own it. Fuller answer: I was always had a neutral view of Porsches; I liked them but never really desired on or thought about owning one. My training contract was in the Channel Islands and our Office Manager had an interest in a workshop in a farmyard in the middle of nowhere and we got chatting at a BBQ in early July 2006. He told me that he knew of a one-owner car that was, he thought, a targa and was for sale; the owner had bought a 996 in 1999, didn t like the p/ex quote and kept the 911 but after 1,800 miles in 7 years it was time for the car to go. I went and looked at the car (knowing nothing mechanically), saw it had a new clutch and hood ECU (neither of which had been particularly cheap) but was pretty straight; if I ever wanted a 1-owner 911, this was the time. LHD 911s were cheaper at the time but being 1.93m and of an indelicate frame, this was a 911 I could fit in (I can t fit in coupes and pedal offset in RHD is, for me, challenging) and, most importantly, afford as it was £10k. I went away and dithered for a week; I was 26 and afraid of what I saw as being inevitable mechanical catastrophe. The car was sitting in a farmyard and so I went up with a friend the next Sunday and he said, if you don t buy it, I will, which spurred me into action. The next day I went to the farmyard in the evening with a cheque and the car was mine. That was Monday 31st July 2006 and, about 90 seconds after I paid, my phone went to say my father had been admitted into hospital and I was on a plane in a bit of a hurry the next morning. 2006: The car needed a little reconditioning and was completed when I was back in mid-September. It rewarded my care by the cold air blower failing with a puff of white smoke on the second drive and, in the first 1,000 miles, all HVAC fans (I think there are 6 on an AC car ) failing and its only recovery when the clutch slave cylinder failed. Objectively, a 911 cabrio isn t a very good car but, subjectively, it s small, quite quick, makes a lovely noise and I have complete muscle memory for all controls. 19 years on, I have no plans to replace it but it s quite nice to have a newer car for contrast and I bought my 2nd Porsche (much better but replaceable) in 2020. 2019: 2023: Yes, this was taken in the same location as the photo above (just outside Davos) and no, the framing isn't that good. Despite being the 29th of August it was bitterly cold, windy and trying to snow. This was Stelvio 2 hours later: (Not all bad as the road was well salted and there was only one vehicle ahead of me to overtake (a French motorbike) on the whole run up) Edited by EJH on Friday 19th September 11:49

I had a GT86 and it felt like the next logical step was to get a mid engine car. Cayman won over the A110 on practicality and not being a 4-pot grounds. Also the Mrs prefers the looks.

POST 86Original post

Since a kid I've lusted after a 911, had the poster probably a guards red 930 turbo etc on the wall. I used to see one every now and again on the road and I was just taken with it.... Then the 959 came along and the top speed, the tech etc just cemented my dream. Roll onto 2011/2012 I bought my first Boxster S 987.2 ex-demo specc'd to the eyeballs and loved it. Then early 2015 I moved to a new Cayman 981GTS, kind of fell out of love with OPC's and moved away for a few years during Covid and then in 2023 bought a 718GT4 and July this year moved to a GT4RS. Weirdly I've never owned a 911 even though that was the car, to be fair old air-cooled 911's I still lust after and I've said to myself in a few years I'll look to move to one (or possibly a 914) in retirement, just a weekend toy.

POST 87Original post

In 2000 I bought a brand new BMW Z3 M Roadster. Awesome car but about 18months later we had a baby and I needed to sell the BMW to get a family car. I took a massive hit on depreciation and decided I wouldn't ever do that again. So, when it came time to buy a fun car a few months later I basically went through a decison tree - what would be fun to drive, not lose tons of money if I had to sell and it and would be halfway practical if I needed to load the baby and/or associated stuff. That led me to buy a 10 year old at the time 944S2 (with M030) that was immaculate and that I loved. From there I eventually wanted something a bit quicker and so sold the 944 and bought a 968 Clubsport which, in hindsight, was probably a bit of a mistake. It was really fun car, totally flattered my limited track day skills, blatted around the Nurburgring, toured the Alps etc but it was always an effort to drive it (it had the rigid sports seats) and so eventually was underused and I sold it. I've now had a 997.1 C2S for 10 years which has been an absolute money pit but that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I'm probably a couple of years away from retirement now and will have to sell the 911 as I simply won't be able to afford the bills when I no-longer have an income. Part of the issue is that with engine/transmission being behind and under the car it's difficult for DIY type repairs. I'm thinking I may buy another 944 to replace the 911 - stronger car, simpler mechanics and easier to work on oneself. Again, a logical rather than emotional decision to get to the 944

I sold my Hawk Stratos replica in 2014 and I had always fancied a 964, ever since a friend let me drive his guards red coupe back in 1990. I like open top motoring, but the 964 convertible didn't do it for me. So, I opted for a manual targa and kept it for a decade. After all, who doesn t love the sweep of a targa's rear screen?

20 years ago I met a chap who had a collection of early cars... 356, RS, 67S, 2.4S, another RS and a racing car and I was beguiled. He introduced me to a group of people who owned early cars, meeting regularly to spend weekends driving in Scotland and Wales and Northumberland and Classic Le Mans. As luck would have it someone had a 1968 2.0 litre S for sale and I paid not a lot of money for what was a beautiful 911 in Albert Blue and joined in. It was the perfect first Porsche for me. Simple so I could learn to work on it and thrilling to drive. I had it for 15 years and have great memories.

POST 90Original post

Some great and tragic stories above. Other than a looming 50th birthday mid life crisis and a long term itch to scratch, my story is much more mundane. I had a long history with VW/Audi, so the urge to oversteer rather than understeer was growing. A R32, B5 RS4 then a B7 RS4 led to a C63 AMG but getting parts for a 10 year old car was slow and tedious, so the Merc needed to go. Where do you go from a 6.2 litre V8? I had a go for 3 997.2 C2/4S cars but each time I set off for the seller dealers the cars had been reserved already. On the last 2 occasions, they had 997.1 Turbos in stock so I increased the budget et voila... The itch had been created by driving several Boxsters and Caymans which were more bang for your buck second hand. A drive in a 997 C2S was a level above, so anything else was just a compromise after that.

I bought my first Porsche 3months after my divorce came through at the age of 38. Had been hankering for a 911 since childhood but ex had hampered the dream throughout our marriage. I knew my new girlfriend, now wife, was a keeper when she said “do it”. Having a young daughter at the time and only having one car, the 911 didn’t quite make enough of a case for itself so I bought an ex-Press Fleet MacanS which I adored. Sold it when my first Son came along two years later and replaced with a Cayenne GTS which wasn’t a patch on the Macan and went very shortly afterwards. Fast forward 7yrs, another young Son and a midlife crisis, my wife again said “do it” and recently (6wks ago) finally realised the boyhood dream of the 911! I’m a very lucky chap

I’ve got 17” Cup2 wheels and CS steering wheel but no M030, and have leather Comfort seats and sunroof. Try one.

“Events, dear boy, events.” In 1975 while working in London in the aftermath of the 3 day week, I had the opportunity to drive a friends 2.4 911E to North Wales and back a couple of times. I was impressed. However, the dire economic situation created by the Wilson/Callaghan governments meant I worked overseas for the next 15 years. By the time the ripples of Black Monday had worked their way through the economy I was back in UK and in 1991 bought a distressed sale 930 5 speed at a knock down price. I’ve had at least one Porsche on the drive ever since.

After nearly two decades of BMW M cars, I decided to get back into motorbikes and kept an A4 Allroad for general use. Then a colleague bought a 1980s 911SC, and while it was being restored/serviced I would often drop him off at the local indie place. It was there that I first saw/sat in another client’s Cayman… a few months later I had acquired a 2012 Black Edition 3.4S : I drove it for four years, including a few road trips around Switzerland and down to Provence. But towards the end was struggling to find time to use it, between work/home commitments, renovating our French place, etc. The annual fixed costs were high (£2k road tax, plus insurance, warranty extension, and usual servicing and consumables), so I sold it on at not too much of a loss. The law has changed here recently and road tax has halved for that model; a brief looks at the classifieds shows they are still selling for almost what I got for mine in 2019!

It soon became Sapphire Blue, which, in my opinion, is just not as special. I was choosing between the car I eventually ended up buying and one in Sapphire blue. My head told me to get the latter; it was 5k less. But I went with my heart and bought the more expensive car, an 'S' with a great spec including extended tan leather, and it feels really special. I've never regretted spending the extra money.

Natural progression. It was 2005 for me. Having spent my teenage years working my way through most hot hatches, and then onto BMW M cars (most of which were modified in some form or another) I decided I wanted a Porsche, initially it was a 996T however, upon visiting the local OPC there was a cobalt Blue GT2 parked up and I fell in love instantly - the wild spoiler, roll cage - the way it just seemed to squat on the ground ticked all of those boy racer boxes. At this time the difference in price between a Gt2 and turbo wasn’t that great and about three weeks after turning 24 a polar silver one was parked in my drive. I never forget the owner taking me for a test drive in it, i was told it had a superchips remap and the way it pinned me back in the seat when it came on boost was epic! Probably one of my all time favourite cars, and that’s after owning every iteration of Turbo S and Gt2 that followed.

One of the childhood dream car brands for me. As a kid, Porsche and Ferrari were the ultimate dream cars. Never saw them on the roads which added to their mystique. As a teen, I remember Tiff Nidel’s Top Gear review of the brand new Boxster. It was Porsches idea of an affordable car. Still unobtainable and a Supercar to me. PS1 launched the Boxster Challenge game. Loved it. Then got a job in IT in my twenties, and a couple of guys who worked there had Porsches, a 968 and a 944. Made me realise Porsches were obtainable: 944 guy then upgraded to a Boxster 986. It was still the current model and I couldn’t believe it. Someone I knew actually had a current model Porsche, was amazing. I wanted the same. I saved and worked and saved. Got me a 986 Boxster a few years later.

Just discovered this post… Great reading! When I was 11 in ‘79, my Dad bought a beige with brown interior 924…. My friends and I then thought it was so cool! This was replaced with a black 911SC… That was it for me. The smell inside of leather, oil and ‘911’ as well as the gauges that meant nothing to me but looked cool won me over… Then I heard that flat six whine. Wow! Loads of cars for me since. My first Porsche was a 944S2 in ‘96. Biggest fail was struggling to sell a 993 RS for under 40K in 2003. That still stings 😂 Returning to the fold next week to my second manual 718 GT4. Missed the first one and as we all have said at some time.. “Should never have sold it”

I was a 23 year old with a Lotus S3 Elise Cup, so the supercharged one, and my friend bought a 981 GT4. I was getting fed up with the compromises the Lotus presented, poor headlights and interior, and decided I wanted to compromise pure driving for some creature comforts. I love a convertible so ended up with a two year old 981 Boxster manual, which ticked my goal of having a flat six, and found the 2.7 much sweeter sounding than the 3.4. Owned the car for 8 years, was completely in love, and sold to my mechanic for the same price as what I bought it for - thanks Covid.

In a word, 'Covid', but we'll get to that... It started with one of those red 930 Turbo pictures on my bedroom wall as a teenager, then my Mum bought a 1987 924S, also in Guards, and when I'd passed my test she let me drive it and I soon got quite adept at sideways roundabouting - only 150bhp, but RWD and tall 195/50 rubber, and the breakaway was so progressive and easy to catch. Next she bought a late 90s Boxster S which I also enjoyed, including a trip in it for an advanced driving course with John Lyons, the guy who taught traffpol fast road driving. Him howling 'Let it sing' at me as we bombed down the A-roads local to him is something I'll never forget. But this wasn't 'my' Porsche. Fast forward to Summer 2020 and I'd been through various mod'd hot hatches - a 205 GTI 1.9, a Mk2 Golf GTI in Capri Green then a Nogaro Blue Mk2 GTI with a VR6 Turbo conversion by Dubsport - and onto a superb B5 RS4 (loved it) and a Suzuka Grey RS5. And then Covid hit and my life priorities changed... I'd always worked hard so had some spare cash and decided it was now or never to buy my first Porsche. I'd read all the important car mags from being a teenager (and still have every issue of EVO from its first issue). One review, I think by Dickie Meaden, had always stood out - the 997 Carrera GTS and it sounded like my perfect car, so I started hunting. Targa Florio nr Chichester had one in stock - Carrara White, manual, 15k miles, aerokit, Alcantara interior, I was in love and bought it on the spot. And what a thing, the revs, the howl, the chassis, the gearbox... As I'd got in it at the garage to take it home the salesman said to me, 'It's a good one, that' and he wasn't wrong. 3 years later and I still had the GTS, as well as a 991.2 GT3, then I decided to trade the GTS for a '22 Touring. I never gelled with it like I had with the 997 or 991, but the addiction is still there and I'm now the lucky owner of a 2019 Speedster - and it's back to Guards Red, so come full circle!
