Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hello all, been a lurker on the forums for some time and really appreciate the insight. I’ve got a 2008 Cayman 987.1S with 69k miles, car was a one owner and in great shape with a stellar ppi (though seemingly no one in the Houston area would do a bore scope on any of the Caymans I looked at). Recently had to replace the AOS about 1000 miles ago after severe smoke on startup, after a few hundred miles I saw nothing on startup after the AOS was replaced. This week though I did smell something when I backed the car up and decided to take a video of the tailpipe on the next startup and saw the attached. Decent little cloud on cold start that goes awake in a few seconds, and my car does have a tick when it’s cold. Almost no oil consumption on the car (haven’t had to top up once in 3k miles) until i saw the smoke. The age old question is: is this normal Porsche flat 6 quirky oil smoke on startup or beginnings of a bore score tragedy. I use Driven DT40, top tier fuels only, and injector defender regularly. Cars only been in Houston it’s whole life so no severe cold weather. So what gives?! I’m due for my 3k oil change and will be sending a sample to SPEEDiagnostics for analysis.

POST 3Original post

Perhaps after your AOS issue there is still some oil in the intake, runners or plenum.

POST 4Original post

Could just be condensation. What is the air temp? In my experience it doesn't have to be extremely cold to get some smoke on startup. I wouldn't worry unless it gets much worse.

POST 5Original post

It’s been around the 40s-60s F here, only thing that’s been surprising me so far is the frequency with every cold start, before it was only after prolonged sitting or after a very short drive, which I avoid entirely.

POST 6Original post

any update on this? i recenlty started my car outside (5 degree weather), and it spit out a lot of white smoke that dissipated quickly. i assume its due to cold weather + condensation...?

POST 7Original post

I ended up running a SPEEDiagnostics oil analysis and they gave the car a clean bill of health. There’s some trace aluminum and silicon, but nothing that was anything to be concerned about so I’ve relaxed for now. Car still has a fairly noticeable tick on cold start that goes away once the cars warm, but I just attribute that to noisy flat 6 things. As for your white smoke, it’s likely just condensation. Make sure to drive the car after 5 seconds and not idle the car to warm up. If it smells like burnt toast / eggs, then it could be the start of your Aos failing, but that would be a blue smoke.
