I have a noise that sounds like it's coming from behind the dash that sounds like water running.
I topped off the antifreeze and drove for about 15 minutes with the heater on high. The noise did not go away. The gauge went to 175 in normal time and stayed there.
There are no signed of leaks - antifreeze or other.
Ant thoughts or ideas are appriciated
Without actually hearing the sound, my best guess would be some air in the coolant lines. As the coolant, mixed with air, is forced through the coolant supply and return lines and through the heat exchanger which I’m guessing would be under the dash, it could create a sound of water running similar to what you hear. From reading earlier posts about flushing and refilling the coolant system, it is not a simple matter of just refilling the expansion tank due to the labyrinthine routing of the lines all the way forward to the under bumper radiators and back to the water pump. I think there is a detailed procedure utilizing a vacuum pump when refilling the system to eliminate trapped air. Even though you didn’t do a flush and refill, it’s possible air did enter the system causing your sound. Curious to see what you find out, keep us posted in case somebody else comes across this issue.
The gauge on the car is notoriously inaccurate. It will read 175 through a WIDE range of actual temperatures. That being said, if it's not overheating then you're probably fine, but don't trust it THAT much.
Vacuum fill is really important on these cars, so if you had a flush, then they may not have done it. A cheap Harbor Freight vac system will do the job, you just need to make sure it's used. If it wasn't, you may want to consider having it re-flushed and re-filled the right way. Alternatively, you can keep letting it burp out, but you'll be adding coolant repeatedly for a while...
Was your coolant actually low, or did you just add some because it looked low (on a cold day, it can look low, but still be sufficient...)
I did not flush the system recently.
Because of the noise, I added antifreeze because the level was close to minimum. Now it's just below maximum.
I was told
987.1
cars had a valve near the fill tube to release air in the system. Does anyone know if a
987.2
base has such a valve?
Has it rained recently? If your cowl drains are plugged with leaves your cowl could be full of water. Pull off the panel over the battery in the frunk and check.
The 987.2 cars have that valve - but it is in the engine compartment. We do know you have a Base 987.2 w/PDK - but Cayman or Boxster? Getting to the valve is a bit more involved on the Boxster. On the Cayman it's a piece of cake.. sorta.
You might visit our new members forum, where you can tell us about your 987 - and show us pretty photos of it. It's a tradition around here..

Welcome to
Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum
- where the sound of water burbling through the car isn't unknown.. just undesirable. And kudos on getting the post in the correct subforum! Way to go!
No rain recently. Only self washing.
But thank you for the idea. I’ll check it out
Thank you Don.
This appears quite helpful. I'll try it ASAP
