Suggestion

I would point out that I don't own a turbo only a regular 996 so it would be worth checking on more turbo-specific information.

Suggestion

IIRC, the Turbo and the GT cars still use crankcases derived from the air-cooled castings, unlike the "normal" N/A cars.

Use even though the brakes seem big enough......they aren't

Very hard on brakes during hard track use - even though the brakes seem big enough......they aren't.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just had a call from my good neighbor who is considering buying a 2001 Turbo. I have owned a bunch of 911s and have wrenched them enough to give sound air-cooled advice but know precious little about the 996 series (Turbo in particular). Can you good Pelicans give some of the highlights of the good / bad /ugly… (?) Cheers, Jascha

POST 2Original post

Heavy. Very hard on brakes during hard track use - even though the brakes seem big enough......they aren't.

POST 3Original post

try rennlist. they have an active forum there for these cars.

POST 4Original post

I have done some work on my car and I will tell you that these are VERY easy to work on. Porsche has certainly done their homework on how to make a car easy to assemble which consequently makes them easy to work on. The only thing that is lacking at the moment is any kind of workshop instructions but there is an ever increasing amount of information becoming available. They seem to be very solid and well put together if my car is any indication. My personal opinion is that the problems with these cars are overstated, besides which most seem to affect the non-turbo motors. I would point out that I don't own a turbo only a regular 996 so it would be worth checking on more turbo-specific information. Bottom line is that these cars are very nicely made and very easy to live with, and to borrow a phrase from a friend of mine "The most usable everyday sportscar in the world".
