Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I sold off my 987.2S last year and I'm thinking of getting back an older 911 in the form of either a 996C4S or a 997.1 C4S. I had a 997.1 CS over 10 years back. I'm looking at a 4WD and the reason for an C4S is I like the wider *** of the turbo body. Getting a turbo will be too much for my needs and wants. I'm NOT looking at a cab variant and also looking at a tip now (despite being a big fan of the PDK ) as it'll be and older car and from what I read and am told, one can repair a tip but will have to get an entirely new PDK if the need arises. Will appreciate counsel on which will be a better car for a daily driver which will do maybe 6000 miles a year on average, and what to look out for. I've read about the IMS but understand its not an unsalvageble issue. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Great cars indeed… the 996’s can be bought for a lot less forsure. IMS ’s are an easy remedy on a 996 to 2005.5 motors… although I’m understanding that the replaceable bearings are on certain 06’s as well ( 911 / cayman and boxster ). I like the fact that you can replace them.. 997’s, not replaceable on 05.5-08 models.. it’s a full motor tear down and 25k plus for the rebuild…so there that. both have bore score possibilities.. full motor tear down if you have scores Interiors on 997 is nicer vs 996. Imo as for the tips… no idea on that subject. I do like 996’s tho especially the profile.. and I happen like the headlights with the clear blinker, doesn’t bother me in the least. At the end of the day it’s budget. The 997 will always be a nicer car and imo the sweat spot for analog Porsches Personally I’d wait as items such as these will drop more in price in the coming year. There both still up 10-20k more than 2 hrs ago… I’d be patient

POST 3Original post

Thanks for chiming in. Yup. I'm in no rush. I think I may need to read up more about IMS . So its supposed to happen in about 5% of the population and given the age of the models I'm looking at, will it be safe to assume if it hasn't already happened, it won;t happen. If Its not happened and I replace the bearings regardless, is this a sure way to ensure it won't ever be an issue ever? On the bore score... same question I guess. Given the age, if it hasn't happened, will it ever or its something that's an inevitable with more use? I had a 4 year old 997.1S a long while back and had no issues. My 987.2S was also major problem free. I'm hoping I'll continue to experience the same reliability on the next .

POST 4Original post

I have a 987.1 and 997.2 and so far so good here too.. id never trust or assume on a 996 motor replaceable bearing it won’t ever happen… most of these cars are usually in need of maintenance… it’s just good money spent if you can then do it. If i could on the 987 I would and then do the clutch etc. bore scoring: this also can still happen over time, however over time tolerances become naturally not as tight and it’s not as likely but bits can still break off various reciprocating parts and boom… 25k I’m in the market for another 997 so I’m in the same boat. These cars are on their way to 20yrs old.. so what non of us want is to spend 30-50k on a used car that needs a 25k rebuild…. It makes wanting another Lotus a bit more realistic….
