Peter964RS - interesting stuff, especially as I was thinking about a RHD 993RS for about 36k in Polar Silver (but Category C repaired).

Nice one. Looks like it's going to shift a bit. I quite fancy a hyrbrid between that and a 993tt.

POST 5Original post

Very good choice and a better RS I don't think you could find. George spent a lot of money sorting that car, and it now has a fresh coat of paint as well. I assume you know he has running reports in 911 & PW. Very jealous, as I have said before the only reason I didn't buy one was I couldn't get my golf clubs in

POST 6Original post

Looks awful mate, far too low for our speed bump ridden residence, wheels should be made of fine birmingham steel (and I know of a nice set of plastice trims too) and not this Magnesium stuff, seats look like something the Saxo boyz were w ing over at Ripspeed in my local Halfords and with that suspension it's going to spill your coffee even from the cup holders that I've got you for your birthday. Seriously tho mate, I'd keep the fire extinguisher on the outside of the car, you may need it if I wake up and decide it looks better than my 993 one morning!!!!!

POST 7Original post

Hurray! The car looks good inside and out. How abouth the 968CS you talk about? What is in a comparative state? How much was it?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys UV - yeah, he said he had a running report or two in 911&PW but I haven't got to WHSmiths to have a look yet. Apparently another Porsche specialist magazine has a comparison of 964RS vs GT3, so will have to get down to a newsagents soonish. Scottster - I'll let you rewire it and you can save on the petrol;-) You'd better be nice to me today otherwise I might just have to negotiate the old A40 in my inimitable 'racing line' stylee on the way home tonight ;-))) Thom - never drove the 968CS, but Scottster has and rates it highly. It was actually a PH members, really well maintained and pretty immaculate apparently. Sadly it got withdrawn from sale. Price would have been between 14k and 18k in speed yellow, RHD, depending on condition and mileage, but never got as far as negotiations.

POST 9Original post

Domster, Big thumbs up. I Love It !! I'll be looking for a 964 at some time so I'd be interested to know what you think of it. It probably won't be an RS (more like a C4), but a write up would be useful. Nice one !

Domster, Congratulation on an excellent choice! I've had a Silver 964RS for the last 2 years. It's the only car I've owned which I plan never to sell. If you have any questions just ask.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks paul - it does feel the 'right' car to go for... I'm glad you hold yours in high esteem. It is nice to know there's another PHer out there with one. I have a tame ex-RS owner feeding me info - who's a great help - but two opinions are better than one, so thanks for the offer... I'm sure I'll take you up on it. Rgds Domster PS UV - I have seen the site (where I found the RS for sale) - any part of it in particular? PPS Hurry up and get Ray's wheels before the Ford Probe owners welcome you with open arms ;-)

POST 13Original post

UV - decided that they would probably suit my car too so better make that choice soon !!

POST 15Original post

Scottster, playing golf yesterday and saw a white 993 RS Club sport. Looked bloody cool, and those RS wheels are sweat. Go the RS route...

POST 16Original post

First posting here. Should be picking this 993 RS up tomorrow :- www.autofarm.co.uk/car.php3/SB382.html May have some problems getting to sleep tonight. Jim

POST 17Original post

This may seem a little naive or have been already covered on previous threads but what are the primary differences between the RS and the RSR (factory standard models) either 993 shape or previous incarnations...? Just idle curiosity...

POST 18Original post

If i was you i would get a TVR Cerbera! Its faster, and people will let you out at juntions as well!!!

POST 20Original post

The difference between RS and RSR models, in general, is, that RSR's are faster (aren't they in fact something like very limited race homologation models?). I suppose it's just like the difference between the Turbo and Turbo S models - less weight, more power; oh, isn't the 964 RSR a 3.8 litre engined one? Oh, and I'd say it's a choice you've made there, domster. I've had the luck recently to encounter an RS (993 though) at the parking lot, and the even greater luck to see a person looking like the possible owner of it running across the road straightly towards it... So I talked some words to him about the car, and I made him play with the throttle before he left... Inside, this car is great, just my taste: Perfect spartanism. I love that door opening and closing mechanism... Greetings from Germany!

POST 21Original post

Differences between 964RS and RSR are that the RSR is a lot rarer, has a 3.8 engine and came stripped out (no carpets etc) with a roll cage fitted. To my knowledge a 993RSR wasn't produced but a 993 Clubsport was. Not sure about the differences but would assume it is more sparten inside than a standard 993RS.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, A few quick points. Jim - congrats on new 993RS - I saw it at Autofarm being fettled pre-delivery for you last week. Looks lovely even on a ramp! It was Karen who got me onto the 964RS thing. She said a car 'may be coming in soon' but I couldn't wait and found the red one. Deposit down and she still hasn't called... I was offered an RHD silver 993RS for 36k, but it was a Category C repair and I will be happy with the 964RS for a couple of years before 'upgrading' to the 993RS probably. Nice choice! Twerlie - there are many reasons why I didn't go for a cerby, but they used to be a favourite of mine performance-wise. It all comes down to build quality and reliability sadly (surprise surprise). You will notice I've gone for a Porsche with a bit of character, though. The standard ones can sometimes be a bit too sensible! RS vs RSR, well the 964RS did have a racing/road counterpart called the RSR, which was based on the turbo body (965) with a 3.8l engine not the 3.6. They are stunning - I've seen one in the flesh. Carpeted, but with a roll cage and harnesses, presumably as standard. They had the red brakes and 3.6 split rims, plus a big biplane spoiler. They also did a 964 RS clubsport spec car that had no carpets and a roll cage. This was basically for weekend racers. The 993RS didn't come in RSR spec, I believe, just the clubsport as mentioned. To be honest, I'm not sure how much quicker the RSR is over the RS... the 3.8 engine was rated at 320 rather than 260, but RSs normally do nearer 280 out of the box. Big problem for the RSR is the turbo body - it's heavier and has more drag (the biplane spoiler alone weighs a ton) and a roll cage will be quite meaty, too. Dunno the stats, but I reckon the RSR would be pipped on top whack by the narrower profile RS, but slightly more accelerative, maybe only be a few tenths of a second. No denying the RSR looks the business though! I'd probably still rather have one. Rgds Domster >> Edited by domster on Friday 26th April 10:00

POST 25Original post

Just leaving to pick it up, wheres the sun gone. I'll let you know what I think later.

POST 26Original post

You know the weekend is here when the sun buggers off and the rain starts pissing down!

POST 27Original post

Kevin - are you about for the whole weekend or heading off home with the car? Would be great if you wanted to come and show off the car at our pint and pies meet?? Domster and I saw the car marked as 'sold' when looking for him a couple of weeks ago - It looks brilliant. Cerby vs 964, no comparison in my mind, straight speed isn't everything (although it certainly helps ) the 964 RS driving experience will be awsome.

POST 28Original post

I was only joking, i love the 964 and i would love a 911 GT3. You cant beat the Germans for build quality, and reliability. But to be honest, i have a TVR Chimaera, and my brother has a Cerbera and they are both very reliable! (Touch Wood) Have fun with the car, it looks a stunner!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Twerlie. Come along to a meet at some point with your bro, if you are nearby. Rgds Domster PS GT3 is a stunner, you are right.

POST 31Original post

First post on the Porsche board, Domster, That 964 RS sounds ideal. Sounds like it has really been looked after. Murray, Fantastic car. I plan to own one in a year or 2. Mine will have a cage and no air bags! A blue one me thinks. Still practising rear wheel drive antics in my E30 M3 in the mean time. I have seen both 964 and 993 RS's at trackdays, and they beat just about everything. I had a rubystone red 964 RS up my behind at Croft once, and it just exploded past me after the chicaine. A lot to be said for the engine position for traction out of slower bends. I hope you 2 keep us up to date with your ownership experiences.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Will keep you all informed as and when ownership approaches (about 4 weeks away), full driving impressions etc. That said, I know peter964RS has had one for years, as he's a fellow blatchatter. Rgds Domster

POST 34Original post

First impressions. Picked the car up from Autofarm on Friday. It looked absolutely fantastic, if I didn't know better I'd think it was a new car. Travelled home via the M40, pleasantly surprised at the ride quality. Also impressed with the acceleration, pulls like a train in any gear. Steering on the car is amazing, extremely direct. Over the weekend I ventured out on some of local country roads and found it a bit of a handful. That and me getting used to a lhd wasn't a nice combination. Went down to Goodwood today. Was orginally going to take my 340r but the weather forecast wasn't too promising. Unfortunately failed the noise test with 105db on a 98db day. Sounds good though :-). Luckily I'm off to Donnington on Wednesday so will be able to give it a proper test on the track where it should excel.

POST 35Original post

Can someone tell me (as a sportscar fan, but not specifically a Porsche fan) why nearly every car seems to be LHD? Can't all have been driven over from Germany by bloody service blokes surely? Did Porsche not sell any cars in the UK in the 80s/90s? I think they did!! Of the ones I see advertised I should think 80% are lhd – bigger proportion of any car I've ever seen for sale (except Yank tanks ) Oh yeah and the original M3

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

>Can someone tell me (as a sportscar fan, but not >specifically a Porsche fan) why nearly every car seems >to be LHD? LHD cars, even Porsches, are quite rare in general terms, but their value on the continent compared to inflated UK prices has seen an influx of LHD 'exotica' in recent years. Most of these will be sold outside of the main dealer network, so if you are using Top Marques as your bench mark, you will find that up to half the Porsches for sale privately may be LHD. If you look at the porsche main dealer website you will only find a handful of LHD vehicles - 90% are RHD. Also, remember that most people who own LHD cars are real enthusiasts, who will put up with the hassle factor. PH is an enthusiast's site, so there will be more LHD Porsche owners here than proportionally than per capita of population. The final point is that some of the models we're talking about, like the 964RS, are very rare in RHD. They made 2015 LHD cars and 49 RHD cars. Some say it's the best driver's Porsche made, so if you want one, you're likely to end up with a LHD example. Some say these are much purer (the RHD 964RS came with power steering and it was originally engineered as a LHD car.) >Can't all have been driven over from Germany by bloody >service blokes surely? I have personally imported two cars (not a service bloke!). There are also companies like MCP Motorsport that make a living from it. Re the original M3, this model *only* came in LHD. Likewise Delta Integrales, Alfa SZs and a few other cars. I think Porsche is the marque with the highest proportion of LHD vehicles in the marketplace. Rgds Domster

POST 37Original post

domster, congratulations on an excellent purchase. i'm going to france for a few days with a 964rs owner which will hopefully give me a real insight to the car. have you seen 911 & pw feb 2002, as there is a running report on the car you are buying. if not let me know and I will fax you a copy. cheers Paul

POST 38Original post

Every 993 RS I've seen in RHD costs more than a 993tt. I know a lot of people like the rarity of these but it seems better value to get the turbo, strip it down and have sports suspension fitted. More poke for less cash. RS / turbo / Gt hybrid. Horses for glue etc...

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PAC - cheers for offer of faxing it thru - Scottster purchased said magazine yesterday... need to read it in detaill, but George told me the gist of it when I met him. Always nice to know a car's history! Roadrunner - I quite agree that the RSs are overpriced, especially compared to the Turbos. Their cult status, and rarity, make them poor value. To be honest, I have bought mine as much for the resale value as anything else - it should be virtually non-depreciating, whereas a mainstream turbo model may lose slightly more. Rgds Domster

POST 41Original post

True. I'm thinking along the lines of a GT3 for later on, for the same exact reason. I was going to spend money upgrading a 993tt, but thought I will loose all the cash on extras come trade in time. Was a bit concerned over possible leaking turbo's, !st gear issues, 4wd system & clutch, and all that extra plumbing too. I like the idea of the minimal nature of a GT3 - none of the above to worry about with the same 0-100. Even better with the JZMachtech 400 upgrade too! (Exhaust/chip).Arggh, here I go again....

POST 42Original post

PAC: Chateau? Bordeaux? Just curious.... I'm off to France with a fellow 964RS owner and crowd of guys soon... The RS will hop and skip on public roads. Don't treat it like a Scooby. It's too stiffly sprung. Also, your comment about ride quality mystifies me. After three years I have a fused coccyx. Goodwood guys are a pain in the bum with noise testing. Mine has the Cup exhaust and came in at 98.5db at a recent noise test. They must have innacurate measuring equipment; plus a lot of cars are far noisier than the RS, but guess where the noisiest component is in a 911? Right where they sample noise. Tip for noise testing: put your foot on the clutch. It's very noisy and close to the metering point, might help lose a few db. Also lie when they ask for what you max revs are! Finally, don't go to Goodwood, or go just the once for nostalgia's sake. I find much to criticise about their arrangements and little to enjoy compared to, say, Donington. 993RS is a great car and so is the GT3. They definitely have a better chassis than the 964RS. However, I believe that the 993RS engine is slightly less exciting to use, albeit more powerful - a bit dull and less responsive compared to the 964. Ultimately, it's a question of excitement over speed. 993RS, and especially the GT3, are a quicker in most hands, but 964RS is magical in its' responsiveness and generall aura of 911-ness. Difficult to describe unless you've owned one. I suspect you'd "upgrade" to one of those two and find you'd gained some speed and some driving ease at the expense of some of the magic. I know of one owner that went 964RS->993->GT3 and back again to 964RS. It's cheaper, too! >> Edited by peter_964rs on Tuesday 30th April 12:18

Mikey T - sorry, didn't spot the smiley! Joke taken... Peter964RS - interesting stuff, especially as I was thinking about a RHD 993RS for about 36k in Polar Silver (but Category C repaired).

Don't get me wrong, 993RS is a great car. In some respects much, much better than the 964. The chassis is so much more forgiving IMHO; powerslides and oversteer tomfoolery far easier than with the 964. The latter is more snappy and knife-edge; oh-so-satisfying when you get it right, though! Plus, you can go quicker with less effort in the 993, which is also important if you don't want to be shown up by the lesser Caterhams or even a (sharp indrawn breath) TVR. In the hands of a better driver than I, the 964 is probably just as quick as the 993, but in "regular" hands I'm sure the 993 is less intimidating and more accessible. But, so what? Speed is not as important as enjoyment, comfort of lesser value than responsiveness in this kind of car, and I reckon you'd enjoy the challenge of taming the 964RS over the blander (note: everything is relative) feel of the 993.

Peter964rs, Are you the owner of a yellow RS, black wheels, big rear spoiler, had a bit a spin at Nurburg with Wheeltorque last year. If yes, you may remember me, I've got a Silver 964RS and was also at Nurburg and Spa with Wheeltorque. Intersting your comments about your noise at Goodward, was this a static reading taken at .5 metre from the exhaust at approx 4000rpm. My RS also has a cup exhaust plus the undertray removed (yours wasn't at spa). I havn't managed to get a reading under 101 on my noise meter using all the tricks (hot engine, clutch in, build revs slowly). Managed to get onto to Bedford with a 101 limit, although I the suspect the guy doing the testing cut me some slack. >> Edited by paulc on Wednesday 1st May 13:08 >> Edited by paulc on Wednesday 1st May 13:09

Yes, that's me. Didn't have the spoiler at the 'ring, hence lack of rear end grip, also dodgy tyres, which contributed to the accident! Much happier with Goodyear F1s even though they're not N rated; you can go sideways with (relative) ease. Ill be there this year too, possibly also Spa. Noise testing is so erratic, isn't it? My last test was a "track day" at Bentwaters last weekend where a handheld noise meter was used at the exhaust exit. I had my foot on the clutch and held around 4500rpm. But I remember going to Goodwood once and being told I'd "just scraped in" under their noise limit, whatever it was on the day; apart from that, there were a number of reasons why I'd not want to go back.....

Hi Guys After months of dithering and waivering between 993s, Turbo 2s and even a lovely 968CS, I have now made my choice. The car to replace my Lotus Carlton will be a Porsche 964RS. For me, this seems the ultimate blend of Porsche reliability, TVR-esque extreme character, scintillating performance and purity. They apparently don't depreciate much in LHD either, and Evo recently put it ahead of some very tasty machinery (inc 996TT and 993GT2) as a 'driver's Porsche'. It even stuck to the rump of a 959 on the twisties, so I may not miss my 377bhp too much. Thing is, I've never even driven one. And I've put a deposit down on the following car (make sure the URL has no gaps when you paste, dunno what the line breaks will do). http://members.rennlist.com/rslightweight/for%20sale.htm Yes, I am a nugget, but a happy one at that! Delivery will be in a month or so, whereupon it will appear at the odd PH meet. What do you guys reckon? Anyone driven an RS - I know UV has. And yes, I know it will be rawer than a session with madame whiplash ;-) Rgds Domster
