Just thought I would add another option for folks to check if the below repair doesn’t solve the issue.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

92K 2002 996 C4S.....no codes, no problem filling up tank, new gas cap, no visible gas leaks on floor, mileage and performance is normal. The problem is strong gas smell from FRONT of car. Smell persists regardless of fuel tank level. My nose detects smell around fuel level sending unit. No obvious cracks. No apparent broken hoses or disconnected hoses. No smell in rear of car-just front. I do not want to just replace parts. Suggestions?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok....for those with similar problem...I removed the “hat” covering the fuel level sender unit, and had my wife start car and gas came out around a crack that originated from one of the lines on the sender. Replaced part and problem solved. If anyone wants to see photos, reply to this thread.

POST 6Original post

Just thought I would add another option for folks to check if the below repair doesn’t solve the issue. I had an 06 996 with only 43k miles that had a strong constant gas smell. I pursued the below fix but it ended up being the roll over valve that had to be replaced.
