Hey guys I'm hoping that maybe you could help me settle the conflict between me and my dad. My dad has an 04 C4S with
tires
that are worn and possibly have dry rot from not driving it a lot. We recently sent my mom's
Cayenne
down to New Orleans and now my dad is looking at a new car just for when it snows. What i told him is that his car should be fine in the snow if he just gets snow
tires
and he can save the $ that he would of spent on the new car. What are your guys opinions on the 911 C4S in the snow with the right
tires
can it be done or should i tell him just to get a new car for like 10 days out of the year. (We live on long island so snow isn't that bad though this year there has been a good amount)
Thanks,
Ryan Michaels
I had a 2003 C4S that I drove in the snow with the regular summer
tires
up to 3 inches of snow and was able to get around, adding snow
tires
you could easily get into deeper snow and have more control. As long as he doesn't do anything foolish, the C4S with snow
tires
would be a very fine option.
My former C4S was a terrific snow car with the right
tires
. I wish I still had it to keep my Cayman company.
Thanks for all of the fast responses, my dad just looked at them and he said that he doesn't want to get winter
tires
. Do you guys think that all weather
tires
would do a good enough job?
As I said I drove in up to 3" of snow on the regular high performance
tires
and was able to get around, you just have to watch what you are doing, make sure you give yourself plenty of distance following other cars, don't speed or do anything foolish, make physics work for you not against you and you can drive around in those conditions. Keep in mind most of the time you get to a main road and it has been plowed leaving only a thin layer of snow or a layer of packed snow which you will be able to drive on. I'm assuming your summer/performance
tires
will have plenty of tread, if you are trying to drive around on slicks or
tires
so worn that they are almost slicks then no you aren't going to go anywhere.
Since he isn't driving the C4S anyway, why keep it? There are certainly 100's of better cars for the snow and are also good cars to drive, and are much easier to get in and out of. Practicality is usually better than trying to force things to work with the wrong tools.
The reason why he wasn't driving his car was because he was driving my moms car around while she was in NO and now since we just sent it down there he will have to start driving his car again.
Hey Ryan,
Another local member with a 997 C4s, Cayman718, ran summer
tires
on his car when we met up last month. I warned him to be careful. After the snow/ice we got the last few weeks, he invested in a new set of
tires
.
Hope he sees this thread and tells the story of what happened.
