Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
What I have done is un-house the OBD plug and check the pins are in position and try to untwist the bundle of wires slightly.
Leading evidence: 'Check pins are in position and try' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pins are in position and try' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I did run the car after the first cable went TU and it seems to run fine, no CEL.

To answer your question, yes it can run the engine if that portion of the hardware/software isn't corrupted.

so, youre saying the engine will run with a failed ECU?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If it werent for bad luck Id have no luck at all
during the first start after rebuild the durametric worked for about 5 min then just stopped. The LED did not light and I got an error code on the computer program. Durametric sent me a new cable, it powers up (LED lit blue, then green when connected to the car) but will not communicate with the engine module.
all other functions seem to be working, I can turn on the various components of the car but it will not read any of the engine parameters. It tells me there is a communication error, restart the car and try again.
I did run the car after the first cable went TU and it seems to run fine, no CEL. My scan tool seems to be communicating with the car.
Ive checked every fuse, unplugged the battery, uninstalled the computer program, reinstalled the program nothing seems to be working.
Would the engine run with a bad computer?
Plug in another OBDII scanner (if you have one) to rule out the ECU. If you get data then it's fine. To answer your question, yes it can run the engine if that portion of the hardware/software isn't corrupted.
thanks Yogi, I did plug in my scan tool and it seems to be working, though all the sensors have not reported yet. Even with the durametric under ready status all the sensors pass.
so, youre saying the engine will run with a failed ECU?
No the engine wont run properly with a faulty ECU (unless maybe its an intermittent fault). Did you try uninstalling and re-installing the Durametric software?
The term "failed ECU" would imply complete failure. A board can have failed components and still "operate". I'm speaking from a IT background so in theory, it's similar to a motherboard in a computer. RAM, resistors, paths can fail but the computer will boot up but will certainly have issues. Start with looking over any physical issues with the connector, cable or interface. It could be something simple like a bent pin. I also agree that you should check to see if there's any firmware upgrades available for the Durametric. I haven't plugged mine into my 996 in a while so I guess I should check as well.
Thanks for all the responses. Iike I said in my first post, Id uninstalled and reinstalled the software from the durametric website, following their instructions.
Owen at Durametric was helpful in figuring out the issue.
the car has 2 communication buses, K1 and K2. The ECU, alarm and automatic transmission are on K1 and everything else is on K2. The tool would not communicate with the ECU or the alarm, I dont have an automatic
so I either had a bad K1 bus (remember it was working fine with the last tool) or I received another bad tool. All the gauges on the instrument cluster work so I assumed the communication bus was good, surely youd get some indication or lack of information if the bus was bad but I dont know that for sure.
I asked a friend that has an 02 996 if I could plug in to his car, and wouldnt you know it I got the same results. It would communicate with everything except the ECU and alarm.
Durametric is sending me out another unit. This waiting to drive is killing me!!
Have had this before on a few Boxsters I've had even my 958 Cayenne - seems to always be the OBD plug. What I have done is un-house the OBD plug and check the pins are in position and try to untwist the bundle of wires slightly. It also helps to have an OBD extension too.
