Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

to measure the valve to piston dimension I could either use a 10" plastic shim to space the head or take measurement without the head gasket if their is enough valve clearance to get a measurement.
Leading evidence: 'Use 10" plastic shim' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use 10" plastic shim' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

1: Using a clay approach where you place clay on the piston assemble the head and cams with an uncompressed new head gasket (Just snug not compressed)?

** I don’t like that I need to purchase the head gasket (which you can’ t return) before you know if you need to use a thicker gasket.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2001 996 3.8 bore rebuild
I need to measure piston to valve clearance on my 996. The spec’s I have found are 0.080” to 0.050” on the Intake and 0.100” or 0.080” for exhaust with compressed head gasket? Does anyone know what is the right spec?
Second is the approach to measure the clearance. I have found two methods but don’t know how they will work on the 996
1: Using a clay approach where you place clay on the piston assemble the head and cams with an uncompressed new head gasket (Just snug not compressed)? Rotate and then dissemble and measure the thinnest clay dimension, subtract difference between uncompressed and compresses manufacturer dimension to get the true clearance. (Can the lifters bleed off giving false reading)
2: Replace one of the intake and exhaust valve springs with a soft spring that can be hand compressed. Assemble as before with uncompressed head gasket (just snug) putting cam and piston in proper position. Put dial indicator on lifter and push down to see when valve hits piston. Calculate actual clearance.
** I don’t like that I need to purchase the head gasket (which you can’ t return) before you know if you need to use a thicker gasket.
*Is there a way to calculate without using the new head gasket and just the factory spec of compressed thickness value?
*Which is the best approach or is there a better way to measure?
I was misdirected a little by the retailer that offered the custom head gasket which stated they thought that the dimensions were not the compressed value. I was able to determine from the manufacture that the head gasket I am purchasing (if it is a MLS gaskets ) issues specification that are the compressed value. This makes sense in that this is the dimension you need to calculate deck and valve clearance dimensions to select what thickness head gasket you need. They also stated a minimum deck clearance to be 0.025" including head gasket. When I dissembled my engine the original pistons had a piston to case deck clearance of 0.008" to 0.010" which would give me a piston to cylinder deck clearance of 0.042" with the stock gasket.
This will help in measuring the valve to piston clearance knowing the compressed gasket dimension. to measure the valve to piston dimension I could either use a 10" plastic shim to space the head or take measurement without the head gasket if their is enough valve clearance to get a measurement. still not sure which approach to take.
