Suggestion

Don't follow LHD guides as the lock/barrel/switch assembly is inverted compared to RHD cars and the access changes a lot due to that.

Suggestion

My issue is I am driving to France tomorrow afternoon and I'm worried it may fail permanently while I'm away or even before I set off, so I want to buy one and carry it with me or if the job isn't too hard I may be able to get one and actually fit it before I leave?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

my ignition seems all up the wall when i turn the key i get nothing at all ive looked online and all the symptoms point to swapping the switch out has anybody had a crack at this?

POST 2Original post

DIY is halfway down this page: Thread 'Anyone done ignition switch, UPDATED with easy DIY' 11 May 2022 I've not had time to research this yet but I wanted to get the opinion of the collective on here in advance. Last night I started the 996 and nothing happened on the first two turns of the key, third turn and the starter spun and engine fired up. I woke up this morning thinking it may be the ignition switch? My issue is I am driving to France tomorrow afternoon and I'm worried it may fail permanently while I'm away or even before I set off, so I want to buy one and carry it with me or if the job isn't too hard I may be able to get one and actually fit it before I leave? A few questions... infrasilver Replies: 38 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005)

POST 3Original post

Apparently the electrical bit of the lock / barrel / switch assembly is a common VW / Audi part and fairly inexpensive!

POST 4Original post

I did, following the above DIY, using the VAG part. About 50 quid from a dealer as they had it in stock. It was fairly straightforward, only the limited space and big hands made it some what frustrating. No issues since.

POST 5Original post

I did one on a boxster a few years back ,dont know if it’s the same??? no probs apart from no room , pretty sure i took the air vent out to gain access, ?

POST 6Original post

Yes I have My advice don't try to access from underneath Just remove clocks and [optional - cant really remember] side vent and go in that way

POST 7Original post

I did it from underneath and via the air vent. Fiddly, but not a problem in the grand scheme of things. Trickiest part is accessing the small securing screw. I used a small 1/4 ratchet with a socket bit adaptor. The much shorter length and torque advantage saved the day, as trying to fit my spade handed up there with a screwdriver was tough.

Looks like a bit of work taking all that out

POST 10Original post

It can be done through the right hand vent and a little from below in about half an hour, no need to strip the dash!! It is identical on 996 and 986. Don't follow LHD guides as the lock/barrel/switch assembly is inverted compared to RHD cars and the access changes a lot due to that. I had a 'How To' with on BoXa.net that ahs been trashed with the withdrawal of UK access Imgur last week, sadly, but the text is still there.

POST 11Original post

It’ll take under an hour with access through the right hand vent removal, no need to remove the clocks. The grub screw is the tricky bit but it’s ok with a suitable tool, just don’t remove it completely!
