I love my 08
porsche cayman
but I am very interested in traiding it in for a used 996 turbo. How much would I get raped by a dealer for this? Does anybody know any good comparisons on
caymans
vs
911
turbo's. If you do did you find it on a good
911
forum and what was the address? Any info would be much apreciated I love my
cayman
.

If you desire the power of the
911
Turbo, why not simply add a turbocharger to your
Cayman S
?
Will you get clobbered on your Cayman? Yes. For sure. But the good news is, there are some great deals on clean low mileage 996 Turbos out there. A friend recently told me about one with 23K miles for $58K.
Those things are super fast, but much different than a Cayman. Good luck.
I had a 996 turbo for four years before my '06 CS. It was a great car - very fast and very comfortable. I had taken quite a few long-distance trips with it - one from San Francisco to Hershey, PA and back - and it was flawless. I wanted to have a car that I could also autocross and put on the track effectively, and while the car was ridiculously fast, its suspension would have needed a lot of upgrading to make it more track-worthy and more competitive for autocross - while these cars have the M030 sport suspension, the car is heavy and wallows around a little too much in competition situations for my taste, and I really didn't want to spend the money to upgrade the suspension. It really had too much power to autocross effectively, and despite all the technology, it still has quite a bit of turbo lag. I also didn't want to own this car out of warranty.
The 996 turbos are relatively inexpensive right now for what you're getting - an honest-to-goodness super car - and they built a lot of them, so good, low-mileage examples can be found just about anywhere. I would highly recommend getting one that's a dealer CPO - it will be worth the money in the first few times you have something fixed. These motors are based on the old-style split-case GT1 motors found in the current turbos,
GT3
and GT2 cars, and repairing these motors out of warranty, especially a turbo with its added complication, is certainly not for the faint of heart, or holders of skinny pocketbooks.
As far as trade-in value for your
Cayman
, you probably won't like what you'll hear... it's a bad market right now for all cars. As far as a comparison to your
Cayman
, it's a bigger, heavier car, and it's driving dynamics are like a
911
- weight in the back - yet mitigated somewhat by the AWD system.
I'm glad I did the turbo thing, but for what I use my Porsches for, the CS is a better choice for me. If I were to get another
911
, it would be a naturally aspirated model.

Somewhere around here is a video of me passing a modified 996 turbo at the track.
The driver isn't too shabby either. As Beez said, it depends on what you want to do with your car, if you plan to autocross the 996 turbo isn't the car for you. If you want to hit 150mph down some lonesome stretch of road, you can't find much better to get you there quickly and safely and without a lot of drama. Style wise they appear a bit dated now and as Beez said highly recommend getting one with a CPO extended warranty, you don't want to know what the repair costs can be like on those babies...
Best of luck in your search... try our sponsors!
You'd be better off w/ a used 997TT that a dealer could "swap" for your
Cayman
. The interior of the 996/
986
series was a major drawback IMHO. I speak of this after 4 years w/ a
986
Boxster
. Financially you might be better off as well, both in short and long term.
+1
The 997, and of course then the 987 was the reason my interest was restored back to
Porsche
. I really did not like the 996 and
986
series cars, and would never consider owning one. While I am sure they are great cars, I just did not like the exterior and interior design on them. I feel the same way about those cars as I do about the Tiptronic transmission --
