I have the factory amp like you and replaced dash and rear speakers with Alpine coax which did improve things.

I'm pretty sure the factory (non-Bose) amp (and probably the speakers) is simply crap.

I've just replaced my PCM1 unit with a nice double din carplay unit from Dynamic Sounds. It looks and works great ... but unfortunately sounds awful! I'm pretty sure the factory (non-Bose) amp (and probably the speakers) is simply crap. Is it possible to simply swap the factory amp out for a different one, or is it more complex than that? .. or maybe keep the amp and replace the speakers...

It's quite likely that your dash speakers (if they are original) have degraded with the paper cones separating from the basket. Easy enough to whip the grilles out and take a look. I have the factory amp like you and replaced dash and rear speakers with Alpine coax which did improve things. That said I am considering upgrading further which means a new amp
