Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Your issue is likely to be wear on the chain guides.
Leading evidence: 'likely' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'likely' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check camshaft deviation' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I know for fact this vehicle has been standing and not used for the last 12 years I don't know when the oil was last changed certainly not for the last 12 years and I don't know how long before that.

To be fair checking the camshaft deviation is a 5 minute job on the laptop with the Chinese PIWIS

Suggestion
They don’t have to - they can change the oil, drive it, send the oil for analysis etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys did my first oil change on the 996 today. I know for fact this vehicle has been standing and not used for the last 12 years I don't know when the oil was last changed certainly not for the last 12 years and I don't know how long before that. Anyway there was some particles in the filter I don't think its metal they look like plastic but when you touch them they feel like paper. any help would be great.
Put fresh oil and filter in, run the car fot 500 miles, drop the filter and check that.
You're wasting your time trying to make assumptions on a decriped old filter with a vacant past.
Consider sending the oil away to Millers for analysis - costs £50 and will give you a very thorough insight and take away lots of guess work.

If you tell Millers it's 12 year old+ oil, I expect they'll laugh and throw it in the bin. New stuff, I would recommend at least 1k miles before sending them any.
Agreed, I probably wasn't clear, send the replacement oil away, not the old stuff.
Millers said anything over 250 miles would be sufficient when I spoke to them.
Unbelievable comments here. Car's been sat with the same oil in for over 12 years, nobody has a clue what's in there or what could be wrong and members are suggesting engine work. My filter has bits in EVERY year after 12 months.
With these cars with the M9X engine, one of the first things to check is Cam Dev. It’s not difficult , but if it’s out of spec it can guide the DIY enthusiast on what to focus on. They don’t have to - they can change the oil, drive it, send the oil for analysis etc. it all helps. But plastic in the oil filter tends to be a chain guide issue - not always.
