I don't know what Hilda and Herman were thinking but when I want to change gears I really, really don't want to feel like I'm pushing a Vending machine's coin return trying to get my 25 cents back All I can think is that they are trying to appeal to the former tiptronic owners by saying "Hey look the wheel is very similar to what came before".

They really do work well and change the ride charachteristics.

I assume you meant picked up for a test drive or something because if the dealership sold you that car yesterday (Friday) then your car will be confiscated because the first legal on-sale date is today.

We configured the touchscreen PCM to use Alex's phone with bluetooth and made a call on the speaker.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sharky,

Cheers Ken, and we ordered the 09 MKII 997S so I drove it back to the shop for the first time today and so far I have to say it feels like much more than just a "refresh". I absolutely dig the PDK. The sports suspension feels pretty darned good for "stock" out of the box and the power increase is certainly noticeable too. Feels quite quick to me
Congrats, that's hot!

A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!
Congratulations! Please keep us abreast of your experiences with the car.
The Cayman S is my first and only Porsche. I plan to keep mine for a while, but you never know. In the end we are car nuts:naughty:, and I enjoy any nice car, especially another Porsche.:drivingskid:
I missed seeing the unveiling at the dealership today because I'm stuck at work.
I'd like to see close-up pictures of the console with the PDK.
Overall, a lovely car, and just slightly different enough from the outside to fool the masses and be noticed by the cognoscenti.
Not my cup of tea, though. On the wishlist: TPC turbo.

Outstanding
Congratulations!
Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte has a Racing Green C4S with Sand and an Aqua Blue Cab in stone. Both with PDK. The new colors are outstanding. I drove the coupe Friday and loved it. Highly recommended!
Impatiently waiting for the first Cayman PDK
Hurry up Porsche :helpme:
Hey James and the other C'clubbers, thanks for the kind words. I've had such a fun weekend driving the car Friday and then all day yesterday our Cayman S. It really makes me wonder how a 3.8PDK would be unbeatable in the Croc mid-ships. Maybe one day
I'm pretty stoked about the car thus far. I also like a lot of the updates made. I think I was in the same camp as most. Doubting the PDK along with the rest of the new updates. I don't look at this car as a comparable to the RS as it's still chalk vs cheese. The RS' motor is still in my mind the most fun you can have in a 911. The new DI certainly seems like it has good power and perhaps close to that of a 996GT3. The response is fantastic with the DI and it's almost like the good old days of a "cable" throttle body. The pedal feels more connected and less electronic if you will. I think the 997MKII with PDK is a much "easier" car to drive daily and live with in traffic. The PDK and software/shift patterns are _especially_ impressive in one area that I still think matters- in traffic and on hills. It feels so smooth and so well done that you think you're in an automatic. Friday rush hour traffic was my first drive in it and I can say that with PDK there's now no need for the Tiptronic. It's done. Over with and time to move on. What you also get with PDK is a more involving car, more sophisticated and generally faster set up than you used to with a Tip. Anyone can jump in and drive it anytime and under any circumstance. Traffic, freeway, curvy roads et. al. This is Porsche's first attempt and they scored. Combine it with a 7-speed exceptionally geared tranny you get a very quick car in terms of straight line speed. It goes like stink as the magazines have said.
Out of the box experience thus far has gone like this. Styling, I like it. The new color. I really like it. The stock wheels? A bit nicer. Led lights- cool. Transmission, practical and still fun but not RS 6speed. Suspension, the best yet for a "non" GT 911. I love the different settings with the sport suspension. They really do work well and change the ride charachteristics. In 'normal' soft mode I can't see the wife-o-meter even registering on the richter-scale. Creature comforts are the best yet. The NAV is finally on par with a modern Toyota and functional. BlueTooth, ipod yadda yadda. Stereo is at least as good as something found in a honda and not a 1979 Blaupunkt 930. It's a 911 that's more comfortable, easy to drive and in my mind more appealing car to the masses.
The bad? The buttons. Paddles people. Paddles.
So am I confident that the next gen GT3 with PDK will be a hit? I'm a lot more confident than I was a few days ago. I personally would still pick a 6speed in a car like a GT3 or RS present/future because to me nothing feels as connected, visceral and more perfect for that high-revving hard-edged car. But will the new PDK equipped car be faster? Absolutely it will.
On the Cayman I actually spent some time driving ours back from SoCal to NorCal yesterday and I can only imagine what a PDK Cayman with a 3.8 in it could be. Our Cayman (RS370) is pretty different to stock and you'll see what the press thinks of it shortly but if you are up for it I'd love to see what you think of the car as it sits now (good, back and ugly). I think we've come up with something neat, tidy and OEM-ish as a bolt-on kit for those wanting to maximize the potential of the stock 3.4. The next exhaust set up is as quiet as can be and yet does deliver some performance gains still. Everyone that's driven it has said it's got a great feel to it and is there or thereabouts with a 997S 3.8L in terms of acceleration.
I like the look of the TIP's digital gear indicator telling you what gear you are in when manually shifting. I also dig the look and design of the "paddle shifter". Wish my 07 CS had that look.....
Hmm good question and one that I don't _yet_ have an answer for
I can say that the Cayman does feel like it has a 3.8 997S motor in it.. it's that quick. The new car is heavier but shifts faster. I just haven't broken her in yet but I'll do that asap:banana: The new car's suspension out of the box is really decent too compared to the old 997.
I thought I'd share my experiences here, since I finally had a ride in the car and drove it about 45 miles through various terrain.
The exhaust is somewhat aggressive. I still haven't heard it from outside the car, but it sounds great from inside. Windows down all the way. I haven't heard it over 5000 RPMs yet since we're taking it easy on the car for now.
I didn't find the PDK on-wheel shifting as bad as some people did. It's hard to get used to around corners, and lights up at night so you can see where on the wheel it's at if you need to find it.
It shifts really fast. REALLY fast. Sitting in the passenger seat it sounds quick, but while driving you can really feel it. It clicks to the next gear just about instantly, noticeably improved over the tiptronic. The downshifts sound good. I am trying to find an effective way to mount the mic to the rear of the car.
There were no rough downshifts (unless I pressed 2-to-1 or something excessive) or low-speed stumbling. It drove like a really fast automatic when at low speeds. The gears seem close, but the overdrive is great for the freeway. I think in top gear it was 2000-2200 RPMs at 70-75. Maybe Alex can confirm, he was driving when we noticed that.
The interior is nice. The steering wheel is comfortable. Alex slyly turned the heated seat button on me (twice) while driving in 75 degree afternoon weather with the windows down. I can verify that the heated seats work. This car has the sport seats (which are really good), so no vented seat...
We configured the touchscreen PCM to use Alex's phone with bluetooth and made a call on the speaker. The volume was good and they could hear us just fine.
The car seems peppy with a lot of torque, but I was gentle on the RPMs and probably never went over 1/2 throttle in the fifty miles. I knew James would be shaking his head since the motor's so fresh. :O I'll hold my judgment of the acceleration until I've really wound it out.
It seems like every car I drive has completely different brakes. I did not have a chance to test them much on the new 997, but felt that while the brakes come on strong if you need them, the pedal isn't as predictable as the older cars for sudden movements. Maybe this would result in faster lap times, but it was a little scary the first time I had to slow suddenly. I probably just need to get used to the car more before I talk about the brakes or suspension.
PS - Last time I looked at the odometer, the car had 110 miles on it since birth.
