Got genuine Porsche shoes in the end, and fitted new back plates too. Not quite to Interference Fit level of prep, but still not bad for a 20yr old car!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pulled the handbrake yesterday and it felt normal up to it's usual 3 or 4 clicks, then it made a popping noise and came up another 4 clicks. It still worked but the handle was higher. Today it went back to normal height for a bit but has now gone high again, anyone had similar? It'll probably be the weekend before I get chance to have a look at it!

POST 2Original post

cable adjustment needed, it can happen due to age issues

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had the car 15 yrs and it's always been the same 4 clicks, but now has suddenly moved to 8. I think something has happened either to the shoes or the linkage or adjustor nut inside the rear discs. Thinking about it a week ago the car made a noise that sounded like when a stone gets stuck in one of the brake back plates, I wasn't too concerned as I've had that happen a few times before and it stopped after a minute. When I got home I felt all the discs and thought the rear drivers felt hotter than the passenger side, both looked normal! I wonder if that was related?

POST 4Original post

The friction lining has delaminated from one of the shoes is my guess.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I think that's what it'll be too, I'm going to investigate tonight!

POST 6Original post

Strange, my handbrake on my 996 C4 is only a 2 click operation.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So had a look at this tonight, first I took the bottom out of the centre console cubby and pulled up the handbrake and it was immediately obvious that the driverside cable was moving much further than the passenger side. Next I removed the rear wheel, caliper and disc and found exactly what we were expecting. The lining was missing completely from the upper shoe and the remains of it was broken up in the bottom. The bottom shoe still had its lining but it was only partly attached and as soon as I touched it half of it fell off, and a gentle press on the other half and that came away too. Normally when I've seen friction material come away from the backplate on brake pads the backing plates have been very corroded. I'm sure corrosion has played a part but it's nowhere as bad as I thought it would be with most of the parts in good condition. I think the bond has also weakened over time, the last half of the second shoe was free of any corrosion but still only needed a gentle press to make it pop off. Anyway it's a simple fix just got to decide if it's worth paying the Porsche tax for genuine shoes or go aftermarket?! I wonder if this is a common problem as not seen many if any threads about it in the 996 forum! I'll take some pics tomorrow as battery was dead today

POST 9Original post

I've had 3 sets on my 996 delaminate. Common fault.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh well sounds like I've not done to badly then lasting 20 yrs, do you remember what make shoes you used?

POST 11Original post

I found the same, mine happened a week before a trackday i had booked! Didn’t have time to shop around so got a set of pagid branded from ECP. They fit no problem, but i always get a bit too much roll back on hills, and viewing the shoe/mechanism through a bolt hole confirms the shoes move a bit with the disc when applied, not sure if the shoes are made to quite the same tolerances?

Nice work Mac, looks great. My handbrake is ok but I have to really pull it up. I was quoted 3 hours plus the parts by a well known Porsche specialist. That was at £128+vat for the labour. I have a great local mechanic who I could do it with. Adjusting it might be fun though....!

POST 15Original post

These handbrakes are a doddle to set. I can adjust mine (both shoe assemblies and the adjuster on the handbrake) in under an hour. 51 minutes according to Pelican: Porsche 911 Carrera Parking Brake Adjustment - 996 (1998-2005) - 997 (2005-2012) - Pelican Parts Technical Article Is your e-brake not working too well?
