Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys, new owner 2003 996. There is a strange whining noise from the engine bay. You can hear it much louder inside the car. Loud at start-up and then it quietens down. Previous owner, although he was selling on behalf of someone else said it's a vacuum pump and they all make this noise is he right? I'm not sure.
Thanks Marty, but I think I may have discovered what it is SAI pump apparently it pumps air into the exhaust system to fire up the catalytic converters.
Way over my head.
As far as I recall the secondary air (SAI) pump shouldn't be that loud from inside the car. The metal bracket it's mounted on, should be secured to the left wall of engine bay near the coolant tank, & to the base of the engine bay near the rear sill on a rubber isolating grommet.
The pump should be secured to the mounting bracket with isolating rubber mounts too. Perhaps the rubber in these has perished or a previous owner replaced them with normal bolts. If so this would result in more noise.
This video shows what they should look like.
I believe it was only fitted to 996.2 3.6’s. I don’t think 996.1 3.4’s had the SAI. For what it’s worth my old car was an early 996.2 (October 2001) & had one.
I tested the SAI by unplugging it and the noise was still there, so I guess it's not the SAI
I attached a link to a video I hope you can hear the sound any help in identifying it would be great

Hi Guys, followed up on the speaker angle I removed a speaker pulled the loom out as far as it would go and put it to my ear sure enough that's where the sound is coming from.
My problem now is how do I fix this?
Any help gratefully accepted
Secondary Air Injection was fitted on later 3.4 996.1 cars. I thought it was any that had electronic throttle but I might be wrong. Mine has it. Although this is not the problem here, they can start to whine, especially when you park you car on the beach everyday for 2 weeks on holiday
