On a side note and in relation to Uncle Monty's comment, if the bolts are encapsulated Allen head bolts, I use a Allen head 1/4" bit and use a 1/4" spanner if access is tight.

I had to add quite a few spacers to the heat shields, and use the old coil pack bolts to attach them (they are longer, and fit the same thread)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I assumed I was going to take out the silencers, as all the wisdom points to the fact that this makes access so much easier. However, It seems that all my silencer bracket nuts and exhaust clamps have fused into solid lumps of rust!! No way at all that they were coming off without major angle grinder work. BUT it turns out that getting the coils out is not really too bad at all - a bit fiddly, but easily doable. First good sign was that the heat shields were pretty immaculate, confirming the fact that the plugs were recently changed. The only issue with the coils was that they were a bit of a mishmash. 4 original Beru units, one new Beru unit with the torx bolts and one NGK coil with torx bolts. I have 6 new Beru packs on their way, so I'll change them all anyway. You do need a ratcheting torx spanner to get to the last one though .. no way any sort of socket is getting in there! I tried 1000 combinations of extensions, swivels, adapters and finally just bought a flat ratcheting spanner! Apart from the fiddling with the last coil, it took no more than a couple of hours to remove them all.

POST 2Original post

I use an 8mm ring spanner on those torx bolts. Makes it a doddle.

POST 3Original post

Top tip Alex - I will try to remember that for next time.

POST 4Original post

You mean with the torx bit in the spanner?

POST 5Original post

No, i think he means an 8mm is close enough to the torx size to fit on and engage enough to undo. Edit to add if you’re posh you could buy some E spanners from somewhere like halfords https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-tools/spanners-and-wrenches/halfords-4-piece-star-spanner-set-154872.html

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why didn't I think of that?! Ah well

POST 7Original post

No, the torx bolts are like this (external torx) and an 8mm ring spanner fits perfect:

POST 8Original post

On a side note and in relation to Uncle Monty's comment, if the bolts are encapsulated Allen head bolts, I use a Allen head 1/4" bit and use a 1/4" spanner if access is tight. I also have some chopped down Allen keys which come in handy.

POST 9Original post

The same style bolt is now supplied to fix the clutch. I tested today that an 8mm spanner fits perfectly.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That was a whole lot less pain than I thought it would be .. .always pays to expect the worst Old coil packs and plugs out, new ones in in under 2 hours I reckon. Much easier with the new torx bolts, even if they are bigger packs. I had to add quite a few spacers to the heat shields, and use the old coil pack bolts to attach them (they are longer, and fit the same thread)
