Suggestion

The ultimate solution turned out to be a couple of o-rings in some hard pipes of the evaporator system in the RF fender well that took a lot of time to find (did not show in a smoke test).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just as title states. Just picked up my 996 in November. Its been in the garage since I acquired it. Once it started getting cold I could really begin to notice the gas smells in the garage. I have not done much investigation yet other than inspecting all of the under carriage fuel lines that were easily accessible. Any pointers or problematic areas to look for first? thanks all!

POST 2Original post

Gas tank cap, and associated spaghetti hoses of the evaporative circuit.

POST 3Original post

Nipples off the sending unit have been known to crack.

POST 4Original post

I second checking the gas cap. I had a strong gas smell and it was the rubber O-ring in the cap that was not seated properly. Simple fix.

I just checked mine. I do see dry rotting and cracking on seal. Ill order another.

POST 6Original post

When I first got my C4S, there was an issue with the emission controls, and the check engine light was on. As Idaho has an emissions check requirement, it had to get fixed. The tech started with easy stuff like the gas cap and fittings then into more expensive/invasive. One interesting find was when they took off the cover over the sending unit and fuel pump, there was about 1/4" of fuel sloshing around! Not good, not good at all. They replaced the gaskets and the fuel pump and a couple of other fittings, but I sure dodged a bullet there. Anyway, as I was driving it, there were no fumes that I smelled, but have no idea why not. Anyway, worth taking a look. The ultimate solution turned out to be a couple of o-rings in some hard pipes of the evaporator system in the RF fender well that took a lot of time to find (did not show in a smoke test). This required a lot of time to get to them, and very little in parts. Good luck! I hope you find the issue.
