Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
I still think it was the right decision, but I would love to hear stories of anyone that bought one and still has it, those journeys from new to now, over decades make really good reading, so this might hopefully be a great thread.
Leading evidence: 'right decision' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'right decision' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace of the lights' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

so was a considerable saving).....I preferred the change of the lights from the 996.1 at the time (still do).

I have no regrets though, loved it, and have lots of good memories running back and forward to South of France in the days when you could have a laugh with the gendarmes for the speed they pulled you up for on the autoroute....think the paying of fines in cash helped their mood of course!

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Did anyone on the forum buy a 996 Brand New ? Which one ? Where from?
Journalistic coverage of the 996 often involves the same info, Porsche were in trouble, 996 and boxster saved Porsche, but the purists didn’t like it, ok .. well somebody bought it !
If the internet data is right they sold 3 times as many of them as the 993
Were you one of the purists at the time? Did you have a deposit on a 996 and when it arrived you pulled out ? Because …
Be great to hear anyone’s experiences and memories of the time ..
No.
I went to look but back then I was in uniform and I could have taken the loan on but we had two kids, a mortgage, a dog, etc - it would have been irresponsible, so I bought an Impreza.

That's partly why I wanted the 50th anniversary Turbo, so I could buy from new and pass it down the family with a rule that it can't be sold.
But anyway, enough about me, please share your stories about buying a 996 new, especially if you still have it.
Another silver 996 where the front wings look a different colour.............!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish i knew why apart from the obvious yet sometimes wrong answer.
My 996 C4 was just over £65k in 1999............ my first house in 99 was £32500........!!!1
Spring of 2002, bought and imported a basalt black 996.2 direct from Stuttgart (UK spec) as the exchange rate was favourable (1.60! so was a considerable saving).....I preferred the change of the lights from the 996.1 at the time (still do). I certainly don't remember a lot of bad press from the journos, feels like a lot was written as the car aged and the 997 came out ie Porsche saving money on interior and it shows etc. M60 engines hadn't started to show problems at that stage, though I do remember seeing a cloud of black smoke after a day tracking it around Goodwood and often wonder if it went bang for some unfortunate later owner (hope not!). Most journos were still slagging off air cooled for being out of date .....certainly remember Andrew Frankel saying the 964 RS was one of the worst cars he'd ever driven on the road - funny how times change.
A mate of mine had this:
He traded it in for around £10k for this:
At the time he thought he was getting a better car. This was around 2008 so car wasn't new, but newer model than what he had.
I remember the 996 being launched and whilst I wasn't a fan of the front lights, I still very much wanted one! Few years on, I finally was in the position where I could afford a 911 and looked closely a the 996 C4S which was very popular, but ended up getting one of the first 997 C2S cars to be launched in early 2004.
911 Virgin had a 996 for sale recently and it did look amazing.
In 2001 I picked up a Carrera 2 in Meridian silver black trim for my brother in-law it was supplied by Evans Halshaw in Hagley West Mids (No longer a Prorsche dealership) it was bought out of the showroom not ordered.. I'm sure he paid 56k plus putting a CD autochanger in it and 18' turbo twists off another car in the showroom. I remember he'd bought a 1995 Polar silver 993 in 1997 with 5000 miles on it from Merlin OPC in Cardiff (now Dick Lovetts) for 57k and remarked when he bought the 996 that it was 1k cheaper then the secondhand 993 had been.. I think he bought it just before the gen 2 was launched so that may have had a bearing on the price.
I bought a 997 2S in Basalt black with black trim from Nick Whale OPC in Solihull (no longer an OPC) in April 06 I think it was 73.5k with 8k in extras..
I must have some photos somewhere so if I come across them will post (it was pre Iphone). I dealt with the main Porsche branch in Stuttgart so wasn't a factory pick up, and even though I picked up cheap (via a favourable exchange rate) I still took quite a hit on it as I kept it for 5 years, sold to a dealer, and the 997 was out. I have no regrets though, loved it, and have lots of good memories running back and forward to South of France in the days when you could have a laugh with the gendarmes for the speed they pulled you up for on the autoroute....think the paying of fines in cash helped their mood of course!
