Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I always said I couldn't/wouldn't justify getting a CR until I was working locally instead of being away from home Mon-Fri every week, in fact this was the main reason I sold the C2S a year ago as it just wasn't getting used. Anyway, the good news (for me) is that I've just accepted a new role half an hour from home so the hunt is on! If anyone's got a CR coming up for sale in the next few weeks/months please drop me a line - happy to buy now but equally happy to wait for the right car. Must haves: manual carbon buckets spyder alloys air con not white or black - prefer green or red Prefer: extended leather - actually this might be a must have as I've discounted a couple of cars that didn't have it PSE I did have PSE on the must have list but I'm wondering whether getting something like the Carnewal exhaust plus sport mode fitted might be just as good (nearly) but at a much lower cost. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Hi, there are a couple on PH that seem to fit, a green or a white. I'm always looking for one, missing out on my ideal car in October by dithering too long on price! I wouldn't worry too much about the PSE, you can get that retro fitted. From personal experience the sound from the factory PSE is better than the Carnewal mod but that's just my opinion. An indy should be able to fit the PSE with factory button etc for approx £1800 (if you want to keep your black exhaust tips, as the chrome signature PSE tips comes at quite a premium) The green car with the silver alloys has been up for quite a while.

White is off the list but if it wasn't then the one at Knights up at 39.5k isn't too far off the mark (has PSE) tbh. The green one for sale privately is too much considering it doesn't have PSE, sports chrono, extended leather - which is probably why it's still not sold. Although I've been watching the market for over a year, it's only in the last week or so I've been looking seriously so I'm happy to hold out for a while longer for the "perfect" car. What spec are you looking for?

POST 4Original post

I paid top money at 45k earlier in the year, But it has the "spec" list that's for sure. I also had to have extended leather, on top on the must have normal Cayman R options. Some cars were 35k at the time, but some times you just have to pay if you want every thing. Short shift and sports mode you can retro fit as can you with PSE. So don't discount a car if the price is right as it not much to add those bits, unlike wheels at 5k and the buckets at 6k which can be deal breakers unless the cars 30k. SS is about £400 Sports mode is £700 Exhaust is not quite as simple as the R had a bespoke larger system, but gert sells the R exhaust. If you buy a factory PSE kit you will get the 48mm one not the 55mm R one.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, I remember you picking your car up David - a very nice spec indeed

POST 6Original post

I was also after Red, you never see them for sale. A few months back there was a white mega spec with PCCB but at 49k Was tempted swapping mine for it and selling the Spyder as well. But cars with full spec sell the same day. It seems. Now I am just getting the Spyder Sprint ready for 2014 so have spent a bit on it and will enter sprints with it :-) And I plan to do the ring and Spa in it also 2014. the R will have SS tyres fitted soon and along with its geo and unplugged PSE I still love it. I will prob change the master brake cylinder and pads though for spring. If you can get a PCCB car go for it and pay more to get it. Having PCCB over normal is night and day in performance. If I did not have the Spyder I would buy the 6 pots conversion for my R and fit the 350mm brembo disks. Oem the brakes lack feel and bite and pedal travel is too much.

POST 7Original post

Personally I wouldn't go for the extended leather as a must have, as it really brings nothing with regards to comfort or power it's just nice to look at, and with a car that is made for lightness it adds extra weight with no purpose. I agree the brakes are not best feel as standard but I fitted the GT3 MC and comp pads with SRF fluid and now they feel as good as anything. Essentials for comfort and re-sale/Life value IMO I think are:- Buckets Spyder Wheels A/C PSE Sport Chrono Manual 6 speed Some music Rear wiper Anything else is bonus or can be retro fitted

mrdemon said: Now I am just getting the Spyder Sprint ready for 2014 so have spent a bit on it and will enter sprints with it :-) What championship are you intending to enter?

POST 9Original post

I just bought the white PDK Cayman R from GC Motors which they had since June because it didn't have air con. It has everything else including PCCB, carbon seats, PSE, extended leather, lightweight wheels, parking sensors etc and only 4,500 miles. A one owner, Sep 2012 car. I am very happy with it. The PSE isn't as good as the 981 Boxster/Cayman but still worth having.

My current 130i doesn't have leather dash and looks fine but I think the vinyl covering BMW use looks far better than the Porsche one which looks a bit cheap. My other 4 Porsche have all had the leather dash so although I'm inclined to agree it adds "nothing", if I didn't have it I just wonder ho long it would be before I was scouring the classifieds again!

POST 14Original post

Nice to have the stitching on the doors as well not just the dash. All 4 of my Porsche's have had full leather , I just think they look a bit cheap with out for a car which costs £60k new, But's that's only imo :-)

POST 15Original post

ajondyh said: Trev450 said: What championship are you intending to enter? Not sure about MrD but I am hoping to do the 2014 PCGB speed championship. Everything virtually ready now except me!! That makes good sense as the class system is based on bhp I think, whereas the MSA sprints are categorised on engine size with no consideration for power output.

Trev450 said: What championship are you intending to enter? Not sure, I like the idea of the pcgb one, but a lot of travel and I have never done any of the tracks. So might do the midland sprint championship, and just do 1 or 2 Porsche ones.

I think even in the PCGb one we would be up vs 991gt3. And all the GT3 RS boys. Bit of a Bhp issue if that's the case, nothing to loose though coming last then lol. Just fancy doing some thing more than a track day with a group of like minded people.

I haven't done any of the PCGB climbs or circuits either but have to start learning somewhere, I'm sure they won't all be suited to GT3's etc especially if wet or damp. I'm looking forward to getting the 1st couple done and maybe get chance to talk to the other competitors and find out all sorts of stuff as I'm working a bit in the dark at the moment. Even down to stupid stuff like camping/hotels etc. Should be a big learning curve but looking forward to it.

Not an easy task finding the right colour spec we desire we are all different and require different spec cars With not many Cayman R s around makes finding one in our specific spec wants and colour and of course price hard Have been looking for last 6 months and nothing yet. My spec would be Manual Buckets Air con Spyder wheels Chrono Headlight upgrade would be nice Upgrade sounds would be nice Leather would be nice Sports exhaust Low mileage Colour Viper green Speed yellow Red may concider white but white would have to have everything above and the right price if i can not find my first colours of choice before the spring. Time to px my Mint 996 GT3 mk2 for the type of driving i will be doing next year. I wish anyone the best of luck finding there desired spec I know how difficult it can be finding the right car in top condition. Good hunting Edited by tracydeedance on Monday 30th December 17:12

POST 21Original post

That's pretty much what I did... I had a list of "Must haves" and then a list of "Would Likes". I knew I would have to compromise somewhere but I ended up with a spec I'm very happy with.

Good hunting Edited by tracydeedance on Monday 30th December 17:12 There is 1 viper green car in the Uk as far as I know, the owner is on here, I tried to get that car but he beat me to it. I doubt there is a speed yellow one at all in the UK. Red, well 1 or 2.. But only seen PDK come up for sale . So you will never own one unless you offer 50k to the owner of the viper green one /-). Or change your colour choice. With half the cars PDK that leaves 100 or so cars, then I would say less than half of what's left with leather, then half them with buckets. You are on a loosing battle, unless you want , white, black, peridot or grey/silver. Of course my car has that full spec , but alas not for sale and not in the right colour. You forgot short shift on your spec list :-) So that leaves you a car pool of sub 20 cars to choose from in your spec and. 1 in your colour choice ! So that really means a white car and spec = cost :-) , the only car I have seem with every thing was 49k and it sold in 1 day.

POST 23Original post

Yes I will probably have to compromise on the spec but some of the things I have listed are a must but on colour not so sure i find some of the R colours boring or just dont suit a special car on my old Cayman S Sport limited edition it had all of the above and probably more and it was in Viper green . I sometimes wished i never sold it they are the best handerling Porsche model on offer . With the R it has the little bit more power my sport could have done with on occasions. As said if a white comes up i may concider if the specs right and price.

Surely getting a car with the right spec but wrong colour wrapped would be cheaper than finding a car the right colour, but you then had to modify? Just a thought.

The R is not the case and is more bespoke esp the suspension and ARB's along with the other bespoke parts. you cannot option up a normal Cayman to be a R.

POST 27Original post

Thats my point why I seek an R if possible. The sport did have a tad more bhp than the standard and mine did have a fab spec. Hunt continues be patient and the right one may turn up with luck. I will sell my GT3 regardless in the future so widens my options of a private deal

POST 29Original post

future resale will be a massive difference over a 987.2 and a R, the gap now is 10k for a late 2010 plate. I see the R as the next 964RS, it is that good and the new 981 makes the R already a special driver's car. yes if you want the poise of the R you can save yourself 10k and buy the R sus for 1.5k, :-) but the very last car Porsche built with passive dampers and hydraulic steering cira 220 models with only 100 or so manuals It's destined to follow/match the Spyder as Coupes have always been more popular imho. Not that I keep my cars that long and it's my daily so will be long sold, so not just saying that. Edited by mrdemon on Tuesday 31st December 14:29

Cayman R great car but more like 968CS than 964RS. A rare 911 it will never be.

POST 34Original post

I think that as a newcar vs the cayman S,it is a good buy. But it doesn't look special enough. Shame though because the car is so sweet as a daily driver. As a track car it is compromised but that was never its forte. It's the car I would get if I needed a daily driver

It's better than 911's However I think it will be a rare Porsche in the future and hold it's value extremely well, as it is one of the last true drivers cars'.

i would say the current cayman is a drivers car too. Until, porsche removes the manual as an option, to me, it will always be a drivers car. Shame we have to pay more for a hard top than a convertible.

TBH, it was never as lively as in the 911 so I don't think it sets the car back as much but i agree HPAS is better. I didn't miss it much when I borrowed out the car to evaluate. it is a better platform for me. What over-servoed brakes.....which iteration. If anything newer porsche brakes are too spongy (unlike Gt3s) and don't inspire as much confidence on track but they are great for learning to heel and toe in. although i may eat my words if the next CR is PDK only.

I find the current 981 brakes to be over-assisted and others on here have commented on the same.

Well reading many other respected reviews and opinions I think you're in a minority. Also disagree about a spongy pedal being better for heel & toe. I don't get the thinking behind that one?

POST 42Original post

remember i said learning to heel and toe. Greater travel means it is easier. on track it is not so good. Do you have a GT3? I know you are considering a GT3 master cylinder upgrade, if the first car you learn to heel toe is a Gt3 on the street then you'll know what I mean. On the steering you are entitled to your own view but I don't think i am in the minority when I say that, overall, the electric steering is a minor distraction. If Porsche hadn't disclosed it, I wouldn't have noticed on the Cayman so impressed I am with build quality, accuracy and general balance.

POST 43Original post

I waited for a year on the new cayman hence buying the gt3 and m3 while waiting. It's not as good to drive over the cayman r , it's that simple hence me buying the R even though I had the Spyder.

Re list of liked options what is the difference with spyder wheels and does car come as standard with LSD and if not why has nobody mentioned it?

Cayman R/Spyder wheels are the lightest OE wheels you can get for the 987 models. 9.7Kg front and 10.6Kg rear. Yes the CR does have a LSD as standard. HTH Andy

POST 46Original post

Yes, thanks a lot Andy. I now have to decide whether it makes it better for trackdays than an Exige V6 with its electronic braking or a retro fitted Quaife ATB type diff. Any opinions?

POST 47Original post

better is a funny word. both can do track days and I guess the V6 Exige will be faster round a lap. I see the Cayman R as the do it all sports car which can hold it's own on a track day. The Exige is a bit of a 1 trick pony, but good at that trick.

POST 48Original post

Any racers on this thread who have an opinion on the V6 wheel braking system [no LSD]; Quaife ATB LSD; and Cayman R LSD? [all track use]. Also is the CR PDK good enough for track use?

POST 49Original post

Thanks Demon, that is an opinion on which is better on track but there is not much in it timewise. Which would be more fun to drive on track do you think being the CR is probably better balanced and has an LSD?

No idea about the Lotus, However, I do have a Cayman S with LSD and PDK which has a number of potential track modes (1) leave it in Sport with auto changes and learn the track, braking, turn-in and apexes etc up to (2) with the gearbox in manual, sport plus, stability off, changing yourself with the paddles, left foot braking etc. No issues with the PDK system at all and no silly over-revs to worry about.

Which would be more fun to drive on track do you think being the CR is probably better balanced and has an LSD? I guess in race mode the V6 Exige could make life too easy, it learns the surface and give you mucho grip. but you can turn it off and drive with out. both Cayman R and Exige V6 would cost big money to track all the time though. So for a more track based car I would save a shed load of cash and run a Exige CUP 260. much cheaper on tyres, brakes and fuel and more at one with the car than either of the above. If you plan to do any fast road stuff get a Cayman R, if you plan to track loads CUP 260, not sure where a V6 Exige fits in. there is no winning on track days at the end of the day and being fastest would get dull. I am really off tracks days and prob doing a bit of sprinting in 2014.

POST 52Original post

Thanks again Demon for the further thoughts but could you explain what is 'more at one' with the 260 Cup? I thought the V6 was supposed to be better balanced, more controllable drifting etc.

POST 53Original post

if you want to drift buy a M3. drifting on track days these days will get you thrown off. more at one means just that, less computer control, the CUP 260 is a cracking little car. the Cayman and the V6 will start braking rear wheels for you, etc but it's tyre, brake +petrol costs on both which will run you to well over 1k a track day on ave. maybe even a tad more. the idea of owning a Lotus to me was running track day friendly car at £600 a go, the V6 is going to be a lot to run. As I said the V6 sits in no mans land, not a good road car, expensive to run track car and 2nd hand GT3 money. you really have to had a need to own one at 60k imo.

Plenty of drift days to go to if you like that... depends what you are into I guess, but if you are into track days and lap times you don't see many people drifting. as you say there are Santa pod events for straight line stuff, Drift days for drifting, track days for, well, track days. places like Bedford and now quite a few track day events "drifting" is not the done thing and you prob get blacked flaged. also at £600 for a pair of rears, it's a rich mans game, hence why the drift schools use jap machines and they run on 2nd hand tyres which can be picked up for peanuts. All about buying the right car for the job and mid engine is not really the right car to drift in.

All I can say is that the CR could be the most useable car that Porsche have made --- so far ! Mine is completely standard, it's fast enough on the road, it's fast enough on the track, and it is so incredibly practical. I often leave the PDK in Auto for road use, but always run it in manual on track. OK the rear end is less steery than a 964RS, but in the wet it would be my weapon of choice And in the real world, on my roads, this is incredibly important. I also own a 997GT2 CS, --- the Cayman is better on my roads, and smaller is very very useful. But the GT2 is more of a handful

Until friendly dealer let me try PSE car back to back with my non-PSE car. Hardly any difference so just not worth hassle/cost of fitting. Suggest you try before you buy. FWIW I did get PSE retro fitted to gen 2 997 C4S. That definitely made a difference!!
