So...as my MAF appears to be bad, the question now would be: Is it even worth picking up a can of MAF cleaner (I'd read that sometimes they simply need to be cleaned), or should I just buy a new one?

Suggestion

Unplugging the MAF is a diagnostic technique because it will cause the car to run on generic assumptions about air intake and bypass readings from a faulty sensor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, wondering if anyone can opine on this? - Battery was dead on my 2002 996, so I jumped it last Sundaylet it idle 15 minutes, then went out for a drive. The unusual thing was, it stalled 2 minutes into the drive. It started back up though, and it drove fine on the highway for 40 minutes. - Now today, started upbut after driving 2 minutes, the PSM and ABS failure lights came on and it totally stalled out, and now I cant even jump it. The engine sounds like it's turning over 1-4 times, but it wont fire up at all and start. Not sure if the engine is flooded, but is there any possible culprit Im overlooking? Honestly, I just want to get it started and homethen I can get it to a shop. Thanks so much

POST 2Original post

Possibly put in a fresh battery it might be too weak to maintain the cars needs

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The battery is actually less than one year old. Now...I'm also the one who recently posted that my car seems to have some water trapped in it (I think the drains are clogged, so possibly something is getting shorted), but even while hooked up to my other car's battery, it wasn't firing up. As mentioned, it would just turn over 1-4 times, but no actual combustion.

POST 4Original post

Ok same happened to me a few months ago my maf burned out try unplugging it with a freshly charged battery and see what happens

POST 5Original post

Abs/PSM light is tied to the MAF. You could try unplugging it to see if the car starts. I wouldnt think it would keep a car from starting at all but who knows.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your help. Just to ask: Is it in fact possible to simply unplug the MAF? If so, I can certainly give that a shot. Just in doing a quick read on problematic MAF symptoms, it does sound like what I'm experiencing. Also to add, in case it's relevant, something occurred to me: The battery wasn't really out of power (i.e., it's not like the solenoid was clicking) and it was connected to my other car from jumping it, but conspicuously...it would still only turn over 1-4 times and then stop. I could turn the key 15 times in a row, but each time it would turn over 1-4 times -- no more -- so again, not out of power. It just seems very odd that (for example) it didn't just keep turning over and over...just the 1-4 cranks.

POST 7Original post

I’m don’t know exactly but a sensor shorted out and my maf sensor also went out after water got in from leaves clogged the drains I think water is creating your problem just unplug the sensor on top of the air intake pipe and see how it goes

POST 8Original post

Unplugging the MAF is a diagnostic technique because it will cause the car to run on generic assumptions about air intake and bypass readings from a faulty sensor. It wont run perfectly and is only a short term diagnostic technique in my mind.

POST 9Original post

My maf disconnected my car ran fine for a few days till I got a new maf sensor he’s not taking it out to laguna seca he is narrowing his scope from a problem

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Holy smoke...disconnecting the MAF worked!!!! While yesterday the engine wouldn't even turn over more than 4 times, today it turned over many more times than that, then fired right up...very first try. Honestly, I'm now wondering if this thing's been causing my depleted battery problems the past 3 years. Folks of Rennlist, thank you so, so much for your help. Had I not known about this, the next day of my life would have entailed getting the car towed 12 miles to my Porsche shop, spending an hour trying to get back home, then having them call and tell me it's some $1,700 problem. So...as my MAF appears to be bad, the question now would be: Is it even worth picking up a can of MAF cleaner (I'd read that sometimes they simply need to be cleaned), or should I just buy a new one? It looks like non-OEM are only around $130 (much better than genuine for $750), so not too bad in the Porsche world. Thank you again, this really saved my week!
