A few guy's on Renntech have reported similar (same?) faults and it turned out to be a dodgy wire...
Leading evidence: 'dodgy wire' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dodgy wire' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuse' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Disconnect battery - undo the two screws on the underside of the steering wheel and the air bag will lift off, with this out of the way remove the steering wheel - you can see the air bag spring unit - large round plastic box - inside there is no spring at all just what appears to be a computer ribbon cable.

Read up before you disconnect the steering wheel there is a way to do it without activating the airbag light.

Also the alarm shouldn't beep whenever you set the alarm, that shows that there is something open or a problem with the alarm.

Exactly as UFO said and if you want to test the horns once removed, a wire to each terminal on the horns from the battery will sound each one individually.

You are right about the 90 degree bend cable but repairing it would be an issue - for £30 just change it - unless of course you can see the break before it goes into the spring unit - then you can solder and put heat shrink insulation over the joint and use a hairdryer to shrink the film, howevr, usually you cant see an obvious fault - and whilst its out you cant use the car so the quick route is to simply change it

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I noticed my horn didn't work when I needed my presence known the other day.
I noticed my horn didn't work when I needed my presence known the other day.
- I checked the fuse and that was ok.
- The horn still beeps everytime the alarm is armed.
- The horn with the ignition off and no key in the barrel
works
.
It's a 996 C2 with factory alarm (I think). Seems odd that it only works when the vehicle isn't turned on :?:
Any ideas?
The 'horn' to let people know you are there is different to the alarm 'beep' horn.
alarm 'beep' horn is near the battery.
steering wheel horn (twin horns) are in the front bumper. Commonly don't work if there is a bad earth on the bolt that fixes them to the body. They are earthed by a bolt that becomes corroded. Hand under the front bumper (hole underneath) and you can feel the horns (so to speak).
The switch in the steering wheel is also prone to not working.
Exactly as UFO said and if you want to test the horns once removed, a wire to each terminal on the horns from the battery will sound each one individually. That will eliminate them then you can concentrate where the issue is. Sound unusual that it works only with ignition off.
Also the alarm shouldn't beep whenever you set the alarm, that shows that there is something open or a problem with the alarm. Bonnet, door, glovebox (if you have one) or centre storage open will make the alarm beep.
Cheers for the replies guys.
I don't think the actual horns are faulty because they are very audible when pressed with the ignition off and the key out of the barrel.
I'd read that it could be to do with a floating earth/ground or damaged wire behind the airbag. Apparently the horn uses a different earth with ignition off to the one when the key is introduced into the barrel, or something like that :?:
With regard to the alarm I assumed the beep to be a signal that the car was armed. Would it still set with something open as suggested? It appears to working correctly.

Read up before you disconnect the steering wheel there is a way to do it without activating the airbag light.
Yes the alarm is still armed, the beep is just to let you know there is something open or the alarm system thinks something is open.
Hoping not to have to take the wheel off, I just want to take the cover off and have a look at the horn ring and connections. Is this likely to trigger the airbag light?
Classic - horn doesnt work with ignition on, but does once switched off - this is the air bag spring unit.
The spring unit is inside the horn push cover underneath the air bag itself.
Disconnect battery - undo the two screws on the underside of the steering wheel and the air bag will lift off, with this out of the way remove the steering wheel - you can see the air bag spring unit - large round plastic box - inside there is no spring at all just what appears to be a computer ribbon cable.
The spring unit is quite expensive - I changed one 5 years ago and it was £330 then
Get one from Porsche apart, ebay or some other breaker - you will pick one up for £30.
Simple job
Theres one on ebay right now, £30, search for porsche air bag, about the tenth item listed

If it's in the clock spring then it's about an hour fix and there are quite a few used ones around. Just make sure you get one with both locating tab's still attached as they are very brittle. This does require the airbag to come off though.
Excellent guide! Cheers for that ^^^
Which part of the clock spring assembly actually fails? Is it internal or part of the wiring in/out? Reason I ask:
A few guy's on Renntech have reported similar (same?) faults and it turned out to be a dodgy wire...
The ribbon cable inside the spring unit is as i said - like a computer cable - about 20 wires in a long strip - never found out which of the 20 strands had failed.
When the ignition is off the horn works as it finds an earth, when ignition on for some reason the earth is rerouted.
You are right about the 90 degree bend cable but repairing it would be an issue - for £30 just change it - unless of course you can see the break before it goes into the spring unit - then you can solder and put heat shrink insulation over the joint and use a hairdryer to shrink the film, howevr, usually you cant see an obvious fault - and whilst its out you cant use the car so the quick route is to simply change it
Since you put it like that I'd have to agree with you! Appears to be plenty on ebay circa 30/40/50pounds 'in perfect condition' as most listings suggest so it's worth a punt.
Thanks again, I appreciate you posting.
