Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all i have a bit of a strange one for you today. Ive been looking to get myself a fun car for a little while now and am really interested in getting myself a 996. The issue with this being that i am wheelchair bound and would need to fit my chair in the car with me. In my daily driver (little mazda 2 hatchback) i get my chair in by popping the wheels off and placing them on the back seats and then lifting the chair body across me and placing it on the passenger seats. If i am traveling with a passenger i do largely the same thing except they take the chair body and put it either in the boot or across the back seats. I was wondering if there was anyone with a 996 in or around the Milton Keynes area that may be willing to meet and let me test run this process to see if it can work (I can travel to you). I would also like to take some images of the drivers foot-well and surrounding steering wheel area that i can send to the hand control adaptions fitters to make sure it works before i buy one. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could take me up on this and will throw in a case of beer as a thank you. Many thanks James 07904 393 466

does this thread help T Thread 'Wheelchair fit in a 911 996 997' 12 Aug 2012 Hello. I've just joined this BB so please forgive me if this post is in the wrong place. All pointers gratefully received. My son is handicapped with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair for much of the time. He's nearly 15 years old now and he's not getting any smaller. The new wheelchair he's been supplied with is much too large to fit into the boot of my 56 Carrera S (Atlas Gray). Do any of you know of a collapsible wheelchair suitable for an adult (thinking ahead here) that will go into the front of the above? We've had some good times in the past and I really don't want to give it... The Discerning Driver Replies: 4 Forum: General Porsche Chatter

My son has a travel chair that easily fitted in a 991.1 GT3 and in the 992 It doesnt really classify as full wheel chair as it relies on pushing

Consider a 996 targa..... it has a rear hatch that may be more useful in actually getting the chair in and out.

POST 7Original post

Hi James, I had a friend who used a wheelchair exactly as you describe. I've not watched the attached video, but watching my friend dismantle his small chair and take the wheels off will present a stowage problem with a 996 I think. He went for 2 door saloon based cars as the doors tended to be a bit longer and gave access to the rear foot well to stow the wheels. I think that will present a problem in the 996 as the doors are quite short and I can't access the rear seats without lowering the backrest, so you won't be able to feed the wheels behind you into the rear. You could of course put the wheels on the passenger seat and your seat on top, but that would be quite unstable for a spirited drive. Another aspect of the 996 that could affect you with the 996 is that the doorpost is quite a long way back relative to the front of the seat base. I have to feed my legs quite a way down the foot well which is quite deep! I think it could be difficult for you to do. As you say the only real way of knowing is to try it out on a kind volunteer's car to check it out. I really hope you're able to make it work though and you get to be able to drive a 996!

POST 8Original post

If you are driving solo what about taking out the passenger seat to allow room for the wheel chair or if having a passenger could they then fit in the rear seat ?

POST 9Original post

As mentioned by Skoosh the targa might be a better option

POST 10Original post

My sister in law and later my Mum both used a lightweight folding wheelchair with detachable wheels and it went in the back of my 996 with the rear seat folded. Getting mum in and out was not quite so straightforward (she was in her late 90s) but she was determined!

There was a lad on here who used a wheelchair and he had a 996 turbo, now what was his name? It'll come to me in a bit!

POST 13Original post

Hi James, as Mac says I am confined to a wheelchair and always drive with my chair alongside me in the car. My chair is a TiLite fixed frame sports chair, which I pass over my reclined body in order to rest the chair on the passenger seat. If I have a passenger, things get a little more tricky. The fixed frame will fit on the back seats once the passenger seat is folded forward and slid to the front of the rails. A bit of thought sees it nestling in there nicely, with the chair cushion and back wheels atop the fame. The passenger seat then returns to normal and two people can sit in the car no problem. I hope this helps you. Mac - you have a good memory my man!!
