Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It was a cracked cylinder head which I had repaired by a shop in CA (the owner passed away, so the shop is no longer open.

Experienced it half a year ago when my (replaced) IMS bearing blew.

Suggestion
Last time I sent heads to Hoffman for repair, he quoted $450 to fix the crack if from the spark plug hole to the freeze plug, and $750 to fix a crack if from spark plug hole to exhaust valve guide.

Suggestion · Original poster
Two local shops quote $30K To $40K to replace engine and put back on road AND they dont want to do it till next year!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I own a 2001 Carrera 4 , 102 K mi, 6 spd, dark blue. Engine blown, oil and water mixed, cooling system shot. Great rolling condition. Two local shops quote $30K To $40K to replace engine and put back on road AND they dont want to do it till next year!
What am I gonna do!!!
Must have another Porsche.
Any value in present condition?
Is this a real post? $30-$40 to replace an engine? You live in Beverly Hills or something?
If it's a real post I'm sorry for your issues. But you can certainly get a better replacement cost than that.
Do you have previous oil analysis prior to Intermix? Did you drive the car to failure after symptoms were present ?
Sounds like you have the classic Intermix issue. IF your engine was in otherwise good condition prior, and you did not drive it to death after the Intermix, it may not be as bad as you and your shops think. Several have done a top end job of just rebuilding the heads/fix crack and put MANY miles on since. Search for threads on Intermix, Doug has a good one where he fixed his himself for little money and has put tens of thousands of trouble free miles on it..
Of course all will depend on your skillz and finances, and how long you want to keep your 996, and how you want it to perform for that time ,but many ways to get your m96 on the road again
That Doug would be me. I had an intermix back in 2008 as 48,000 miles. Not sure how long it was driven with the intermix but when I found it the oil and coolant were totally intermixed. This was back in the days when repairs of these were not common and my indy,, the dealer where I bought the car and Flat 6 all said the engine had to be replaced. It was a cracked cylinder head which I had repaired by a shop in CA (the owner passed away, so the shop is no longer open. They fixed the crack and did a valve job for $500. The place to go for this is Hoffman but I think it is a lot more expensive. In any case for about $1,500 in parts, etc. and many hours of my time I got another 50,000 miles and 11 years. I would be happy to share information with you or you can just search for the old threads.
Also, if you can wait Flat 6 will do a rebuild for somewhere in the $20,000 - $30,000 or RND has engines in the low $20,000 range.
Yeah that sounds pretty steep for an engine rebuild. Nearly double the cost of what Ive seen sounds like neither shop actually wants to take on the job
maybe keep shopping around?
oof. I feel your pain. I had some trouble finding a builder who actually wanted to do the work in 2020 when I had mine done, but eventually paid just over $20k including sending the block to LN for boring and nickasil liners. As others have said, that seems to be about the going rate.
Do you really love YOUR car though? If not, I think I'd lean toward selling the roller and looking for a good replacement. The costs should be about the same.
Right, you are the Doug I was referring to..
Last time I sent heads to Hoffman for repair, he quoted $450 to fix the crack if from the spark plug hole to the freeze plug, and $750 to fix a crack if from spark plug hole to exhaust valve guide. He has probably gone up since then.
The difference though, is that the replacement most likely won't have a rebuilt engine. OP, I feel for you, this is a difficult spot to be in. Experienced it half a year ago when my (replaced) IMS bearing blew. Luckily my shop could do the work in a few months and they charged much less than most US shops.
That's very true. I've considered selling my 996 for another car, but I know the things I've fixed on it, and any other car (unless new and under warranty) is a new gamble. Lots to consider.
They probably realize they can't get parts for a rebuild.
They're hoping to be able to get the parts next year.
Hope doesn't rebuild engines.
If you don't already have parts in your hands, you'll likely find yourself in the same situation.
I only know of 1 place that has parts in hand NOW for 2023 builds...Flat6Innovations.
If you want a rebuild in the next 2 years, they may be your only option.
Luckily they're the best!
Where I live..this is pretty much any P independent; unfortunately. Of course the others say "we are not accepting new customers". ;-) I was quoted "10K at least" the other day for a clutch. So YES, shop, shop, shop!
Thanks for the shout out De Jeeper!
What you are finding out is accurate. I got a quote and added things up and it was going to be about $35K for rebuild from LN. The car is not worth it. Now I did know that at some point I was going to have to do a rebuild, and that Porsche's are not cheap. However, I couldn't pull off that much. Not wanting to do the full rebuild myself, but willing to do some work, the short block seems like a good option for me.
Hang in there. This is all part of the Porsche experience!
