Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

There is a plastic guide that may have broken or changed position, I would check that first before panicking.

Pull off the shifter **** - there is a clip that you pull off using needle nose pliers.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 1999 C4 that I use as a daily driver. It has the stock, early Tiptronic transmission. My 35 mile commute brought me to work and the car was perfect. I returned to the car 30 minutes later. I backed out of the parking space and the car would not go into drive. I moved it into neutral and back to park. I attempted numerous times to get the car into drive without luck. It feels as if it is a mechanical issue. 1) Is there separate linkage for drive? 2) I have read some threads about a possible brake switch issue, but I am unclear if that pertains to this model of ZF transmission 3) I am stuck buying an entirely new shifter assembly? $1200?? Thank you, Mark

POST 2Original post

There is a plastic guide that may have broken or changed position, I would check that first before panicking. Put the key in and turn it to the first position (not starting the car) and move the shifter to neutral or reverse (brake pedal depressed). Pull off the shifter **** - there is a clip that you pull off using needle nose pliers. Pop up the cover and inspect the guide. See if you can shift with the cover off. You'll have to press down on the trigger. I think if it was a brake switch issue you wouldn't be able to shift at all.

POST 3Original post

I had the opposite issue on my Tip, it would not go into park. I pulled the center console and measured the adjustment on the cables. The were out of adjustment by a couple MM and that was all it took to keep the trans from going into park. You might check your cable adjustment to make sure it is in spec.
