Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently acquired a 996 40th AE with 62K miles. Previous owner had the car serviced by a well regarded Porsche specialist, and they used M1 15W-50 per the original spec, which I do not find readily available locally....I live in FL. All the inquires I've made regarding oil choice for the car now recommend either 0W-40 or 5W-40, which I understand would be fine for my climate. Any info on which viscosity would be preferable? Also, any thoughts on Castrol Edge Euro Car 5W-40 A3/B4? The Castrol is A40 approved, easily available and as an added bonus, the same oil I use in my Audi.

POST 2Original post

You know you should never start an oil thread on a car forum? I use Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40. It's available at Advanced Auto Parts on US-1 in Ormond Beach. My original 996 engine is 23 years old and at 147K miles. Sure seems to work. Do yourself a favor and get the LN Spin On oil filter adaptor. Makes an oil change a breeze. What color is your car? Might see you around.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

LOL, I realize how volatile that discussion is on car forums, but had to dive in. Thanks for the advice, I'll check out Advance. Glad to know there's another 996 enthusiast here in Ormond.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PS, I suppose the only worse thread to start on a Porsche forum would be an IMS discussion

POST 6Original post

Congrats on the new car. What number? Like DBJoe said - that's a touchy subject and you'll get plenty of various answers. In my 40AE (#1111) I've used either Driven DT40 5w-40, DT50 5w-50 and Motul 8100 5w-40. I think both 5w-40 and 5w-50 are good viscosities to run for our cars. Slightly thicker 5w-50 may be good if you're seeing any oil consumption. All that aside, making sure that you're changing your oil at a maximum of 6 months or 5k miles is far more important IMHO. One of the 40AE guys is getting close to 500k miles on his stock engine and has been running Mobil1 0w40 so who really knows anymore

POST 8Original post

There are many opinions about which oil to use. I use Driven DT40 since it was specifically created for our M9x engines. I prefer the anti-wear package. Best place to buy it is LN Engineering.(even cheaper than buying direct)

What oil should I use in my IMS bearing?

POST 10Original post

For me, Amsoil High Zinc 10W-40 (fire suit on and ready for flames!)

POST 11Original post

Liquimoly due to convenience carried at advanced.

POST 12Original post

Where in a Porsche does the oil go? I don't understand the question.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17920323

Two choices, depending on the style. For air cooled, you just pour it on the engine case and it will seep in. For newer models, put the oil next to the car with $500 and someone will call you when it is done. EDIT: Perhaps a bit too much snark for one thread. I'll see myself out.

POST 14Original post

Always ran Mobil 1, in all vehicles, for as long as I can remember. Never had issues for normal driving and occasional track days. People seem to really dislike it around here.

So I guess I did this wrong on my water cooled engine... Seriously, I'm on GP-1 during break-in, then will use DT-40. Good luck with the choice.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've always used major brand full synthetic, i.e., M1, Castrol, Valvoline, Amsoil, etc. with the proper OE designation for my vehicle (and of course changing at least as frequently if not more often than OE recommendations). I've run up significant miles (200-300K) on several of them without any oil consumption or engine issues. Just looking a bit deeper on what to do with my new (to me) 996 given the high strung nature of the engine and rare but not unheard of bore scoring issue. As the old ad said, pay me now or pay me later....I would much rather spend a few bucks more on oil now, than paying later!
