I have just about managed to get around to positioning myself to be able to purchase my first 911 (the missus now has school run car, and the extension is finished on the house - bigger mortgage though!).

I have just started looking and took a 98' S 996 (asking £24k) for a test drive yesterday.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
Just joined the forum and I'd like to say that the amount of knwoledge in the forums is great - spent a lot of yesterday just jumping around reading posts!
I have just about managed to get around to positioning myself to be able to purchase my first 911 (the missus now has school run car, and the extension is finished on the house - bigger mortgage though!).
I have just started looking and took a 98' S 996 (asking £24k) for a test drive yesterday. It is manual and has good spec (sat nav/phone...), but the mileage is about 97k. The indie had a lot of receipts and the car does appear to be well looked after. Stone chips on the nose that the indie said he would respray.
It drove well (I think), but was concerned about a couple of things that i hope someone here can help me with:
a) Does the money look right - prices seem to vary on autotrader.b) How does the hardtop compare to the cab? Suspect it is personal pref.c) I have only just started looking and don't know if this is a good buy or not - others have spent months trying to find the right car and I don't want to rush into it, but is difficult not to!d) The indie said it shouldn't drop money big time on dep'n once it goes over 100k, but he would wouldn't he? Not sure I believe him...mm e) The car was at Riche in North West London, has anyone had any dealings with these guys?? f) Who would you recommed for a warranty if not OPC
Apologies if these some of these Q's have been raised elsewhere - if so I will go back through the forums.
Thanks in advance, and hopefully I won't have to wait too long to join you guys!

Hi Amit,
If I am reading correctly, (which is difficult as my 7 month old daughter has a bad cold and I got 10 mins sleep last night) your looing at a 98 S 996 with 97K on the clock. I am assuming it is a coupe not cab but what model???
ie C2, C2S, C4 or C4S?????? Any cat D Ins decloration?
Personally I would go got a Coupe. for the following reasons:
1. A safer more rigid body.
2. Less squeeks.
3. You can only have the roof down 1 day a year!!!! In this weather unless you have sunfactor 35 you would fry and choke on exhaust fumes!!
4. Prone to leaks in our temperate climate.
Money looks right but you can definatley get a lower milage C2 for the same money.
I spent 12 months looking for my beast.
Defo go for the Porsche warranty.
Enjoy your journey but take your time in the present climate there are many 911's out there and residuals are dropping like lead in a swimming pool!
Cheers Alan.

Hey Alan,
Thx for the response - kids, know the feeling, mine are 8 and 5.
The 911 is a C2, and is not CATD.
My personal thoughts are the hard top is better, but felt like I my be mising out on something with the CAB!
It's just this one was black/black lthr which is exactly what I am looking for, but felt uncomfortable with the mileage for the money.

Amit
never heard of the garage.. they sound like any old garage
any 911 needs a professional PPI from a porsche specialist
coupe v cab = very different
very few after market warranties cover high performance cars, so you would need to check from the issuing co to see their terms....
the last point is both the most difficult but the most important...buy on condition not price

Thanks Sundeep.
Will be going for a Coupe. As I have just started looking, I may keep searching for the 'right' one.

and any mileage over 100k has an effect on the sale potential of any car...
mine is at 110k although in excellent condition, it is still a 100k+ car so is therefore viewed differently

As the others say:
1) get a inspection done by a specialist
2) Don't bother with anything other than a Porsche warranty. If they offer you something else tell them to reduce the price as you won't take it, then get you own Porsche warranty.
3) There's no need to rush in (says he who looked at his 1st Porsche on a Sunday, drove on the Saturday and bought it on the Tuesday). There's a lot of choice out there at present, look around decide what colour, spec you are really after then go after it.
4) Looking at Riche's website it always concerns me when the website looks a bit flash. Certainly flasher than the sales lot!! However place I got mine from was not too dis-similar. Though follow 1) above & you should still be OK.
It's a buyers market in this range of 911's right now take your time & you'll get a good buy. you'll get plenty of good advice from the guys on here. Good luck.

How long do you plan to keep it, Doesn't Porsche warrsanty become invalid from 9 year old cars?
If you have just started looking then shop around. I have traveled a few places now looking for my car and in the end still wasn't happy. Decided to save up abit more and wait 6 months.

Hi, Thx for the responses, and there is some solid advice there - have been away for a few days, and am trying to juggle work/family/work/family/911. Incidently Rob, I am not progressing with the car at Riche.
Am still looking, and whilst I was after a coupe I spotted the below, which is a C4 cab...
http://www.911uk.com/car.asp?stockid=82580
Before I contact the owner can anyone advise whether it looks on the money (the expanse and range of the pricing is, as I am finding out, broad), also does anyone know anything about this car.
The below is a black coupe, and is up at 27k, whereas the above cab is 30.5k. 30k is a little above my budget, concerned that looking and adding a couple of k here and there that I will end up looking at cars outside of my budget (could sell a kidney  ) Has anyone else experienced this?

G-Unit, are you waiting for the autumn/winter period? And if so does the resale of 911's at this point drop albeit a little? In which case I would be tempted to do the same...
Just trying to get one step nearer to finding the right car.Cheers, and thanks in advance.Amit
