Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What's the best RS or GT3 to drive in your opinion

POST 2Original post

997.2. A better road car than the 6 and more power and torque than the 7.1, which is not that far behind. Not driven anything pre 996 RS or a 997 GT2 RS though.

POST 4Original post

You have a few - which one do you think is the best? I like the air-cooled RS's - 73RS, then 64RS and finally the 993RS.

POST 5Original post

From a man that would know..a certain Mr Röhrl "If you asked me which I thought was the purest drive, I would have to say the 964 though…" http://www.total911.com/interview/walter-rohrl-int... ______________

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I personally think they got better with age until they ditched the manual, for me that's a must when we are taking about the best or most rewarding to drive. Has to be a manual. I need to drive the 996 RS on track, but I think the PASM cars make better road cars. The 4.0 has the best engine, that combined with the chassis tweaks means its my favourite. The 997.2 GT3 close second. The 981 Cayman S is really high up there for driving on the road too. Just the right amount of power and a very playful balance.

POST 7Original post

I think you get out of them amd embrace each one for what it is Very difficult to compare and nominate a best Emotions and intangibles and unmeasurables will come into it at some point For me its its the 96 and 93

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Should have said personal favourite, thought it an interesting one as I've now driven most and can't decide for myself. Wondered what insight others might have.

POST 9Original post

i've owned one of each example (with one exception, GT3 4.0 RS) over the past 5 years, and my personal favourite remains the 996 GT3 RS, although to be fair you can't really compare the GT3's with the aircooled cars - they are very very different. Of the aircooled cars, much as i loved the 2.7 RS, the 964 RS was the most invigorating drive and the 993 RS left me a bit cold (but maybe i had a duffer). so for me, the hardcore cars are the most rewarding for occassional road and track use.

POST 10Original post

I think that GT3/RS should be somehow judged starting from the 911 they were based on. I mean how they improved or changed the basic 911 experience. The 993 RS was the first GT3/RS I drove and it felt special but I was so young and euphoric, to be fair I have some doubt about the amount of improvement over a standard 993 like the one I knew because my dad let me drive its own sometimes. When the very first 996 GT3 arrived it was otherwordly put against a regular 996. I liked the 997 S a lot so I was thinking that no similar improvement was achieveable with 997 GT3 but I was again impressed even if the step forward was taken in a different direction, certainly less extreme the latest 996 RS.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No offence meant. Sorry. It's just that the 996 is so extreme to me as a road car it's hard to imagine a more extreme car. Apparently a 964 is the same, the 993 from personal experience is a pussy cat. I found it a little dull to be honest.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't blame you. I'd love a 964 or 993 again, but it just doesn't make sense when the better driving cars (anything 996 or 997) are all cheaper. For instance a mk1 at 45k when a a 993rs is over 150k now. Mad. But to me it's what it's like to drive and crucially how exciting that counts, not what purists and connoisseurs deem to be the most iconic/collectible

To drive for me the gt3 takes some beating though id like a 964 RS to look at

The 7.1 GT3 is awesome VFM.

Well I've been out drifting my 996RS this morning, it's at its best in this weather. Can get it to slide so easily. Great car, very communicative. It really is great actually. Just stay off the mega bumpy roads.

But to me it's what it's like to drive and crucially how exciting that counts, not what purists and connoisseurs deem to be the most iconic/collectible That's exactly my view too. The air-cooled cars are fun to drive but not really worth the current entry fee. I drove a 73RS a long time back and thought it was amazing on the road. Not too stiff, light, agile and glorious engine note. A beautiful car. The memory of that drive stayed with me for a long time and I eventually ended up buying a 73 2.4S, which was almost as good to drive. Certainly had a similar feel behind the wheel. Also owned a 964RS for several years, which was a lot of fun to drive, but ultimately compromised and tiring as a road car. So of those two air-cooled RS models, I would much prefer a 73RS if cost was no issue. But lately I've found the water-cooled cars more interesting, although never driven an RS version, so cannot really comment on those. Obviously light years faster and easier to drive fast than the air-cooled cars.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I wouldn't say so. In many ways it's easier as there is loads of feel. But as with any GT3 and any car really it helps if you're experienced. The more understanding you have of understeer and oversteer then the more you can get from your car. I wanted to race and become a better driver so that I was never intimidated by my cars upto and beyond the limit.

POST 32Original post

Of your current toys which one will you drive most at track days. I suspect it will not be the 6RS.

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I'm keeping the 96 RS, 7.1 RS, 4.0 RS and 991 GT3. I'll have to drive them all on track before I can answer that! The other two I'll move on. That's the 7.2 GT3 and mk1. I'll probably swap the 991 for the RS variant when that comes out although I will reserve judgement until I see it's rear wing.... Why do you say no to thinking the 96 will get the nod for track days?

POST 34Original post

991 GT3 is the car of the moment (before the 991RS trounces it), then the 4.0RS (esp for you) and others can be enjoyed for ever more. Delighted to be proved wrong.

POST 35Original post

997.1 GT3 Comfort Spec Perfect Im my opinion, great on the road, great on the track, enough space in back to put stuff and comfy enough to take for a weekend away. Also subtle enough to drive and park without unwanted attention. As an all round package the best. Had a 997.2 GT3 RS as well for 18 months. Awesome but not the best all round package, but sorely missed! Driven a 996 RS and been in a 996 Gt2. Both very focused. I think a 997.2 GT2 RS would be awesome, desperately wanted the Aqua Blue one that was at OPC Hatfield but the piggy bank wasn't big enough!

POST 36Original post

I have a 7.2 rs, 7.1 rs, 6 rs and a 993 rs clubsport. Each one is best at something. The 7.2 is best at lap times. The 7.1 is best at driving across Wales/Yorkshire/Sccotland. The 6 is best at scaring me when going for a laptime. The 993 is best at being engaging and immersive. But it's way too stiff for the road.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Love to see some pics? Is your 993rs a right hooker? Have you just got Porsches? We have a similar collection

POST 38Original post

Yes, my 993 rs is a genuine clubsport and a rhd. It's great fun at Oulton, I can totally lose myself lapping it untill the tanks' empty. But it's not so good at silverstone cos it lacks straight line pace compared to newer cars and it's too stiff for a bumpy road. It undeniably has that certain 'something' though. . .
