I too checked the bulb and fuses everything was fine.
Leading evidence: 'Check bulb and fuses everything was fine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bulb and fuses everything was fine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Seeeu911, you mentioned that you changed your engine compartment light over to LED as well.

On another note, I replaced the frunk bulb with an LED bulb.

Yes the LED is brighter too, I did it when I swapped LED interiors and also engine compartment to LED

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My '01 C2 has a light in the frunk.
It does not work. Bulb looks good (filament intact, does not wiggle when tapped, no, did not put a meter on it), and wires are connected.
The only information on the light in the owner's manual (well, that made sense to ME when I was trying to find out info...) was the bulb number and how to replace it.
When the hood is up, the light does not come on. I tried turning the parking lights on; still no frunk light. I could find no manual switch.
So..before I start tearing apart wiring harnesses, what turns on the light?
Thanks;
Carl
When I first got my 996 I had the same issue. There is something about the locking system that turns the light off. After leaving it for a bit mine just came on again. I too checked the bulb and fuses everything was fine.
Funny diagnosis. Went out to the car. Pulled out light. It came on. Then, I could not get it to turn off. I tried to take the bulb out, but in twisting it, it went out. Hmm.... twisted again, it came on. Finally got the bulb out (pretty hot at this point) and one of the end-caps fell off in my hand. OK; that explains filament condition looking good but bulb not working.
HOWEVER: Where is the switch? As in, with the light on, I could not tell for sure if the light ever went out or not. Is it activated by the latch, such that only when the latch engages fully does the light go out? Or is there some other hidden switch?
Thanks!
Carl
The light goes out when the frunk is closed. If you are in doubt, set your phone to video recording mode, put it into the frunk, and close the lid.
Open the lid and watch the video. Drink a beer.
Carefully spray some electrical component contact cleaner on the microswitch on the latch. Make sure the engine compartment cover is closed, doors are closed, etc... The light should turn off and on as designed then.
Awesome, have been wanting to put in some LEDs in the interior but was concerned about loosing the dimming. Did you buy specific dimming LEDs or are they all the same? Are they a lot brighter?
I'm happy to report that all is well with my frunk light. Finally changed-out the bulb today (saw those LED equivalents, but at $9 a pop I went for old style). Took a phone video of the light turning off once the hood was latched and coming back on when re-opened.
Seeeu911, you mentioned that you changed your engine compartment light over to LED as well. I don't know what you drive (nice avatar, though...), so I have to ask, if a 996, WHERE is the engine compartment light? Or is that something that's not present in my '01 C2, perhaps a later model or 997?
Thanks again;
Carl
Carl, all 996's have an engine compartment light its located in the rear deck lid fan and should come on soon as the decklid is opened by the switch. Its the same light as the frunk, so is the glove box compartment light.
Thanks, Dan; Looked at the fan; nothing there. So I started feeling around (it's dark now). Since my engine lid strut is shot (new one being ordered), I finally felt around, and felt the lens on the right side of the black fan motor support.
Pulled out the light assembly and tried to tell if the filament was good; couldn't tell for sure, but when I tried to reconnect, it flashed for a second. I'll assume one of the end caps is shot like on the frunk and change it tomorrow.
Oh, and the 2001's don't have a glove box. At least mine doesn't. Still has the shelf under the steering wheel for the manual.
I probably never would have found that engine light if someone didn't mention it. Don't recall seeing a bulb spec in the manual; will check that tomorrow as well. Glad I bought a two-pack of the bulbs!
Carl
Ahh yes anything earlier than 02' there is no glove box correct.
The bulb is the same size as the frunk bulb. Its not as temperamental as the frunk light.
After 2 hours the light will switch itself off
