Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got this from Mooty, great guy and his stuff is clean with a great price!.... I love it! Damn... that collapsible spare is heavy.

POST 2Original post

Is it heavier the regular spare? What is the benefit?

POST 3Original post

Ferd, looks great! For those of you who are not familiar with Mooty, let me put his "parts collection" in perspective. Mooty has had more 996/997 stuff than Ed ever DREAMED of having! Oh yeah, I almost forgot..... and Mooty's parts fit too!

POST 4Original post

So does the spare fit on top of this, under it, or not at all?

POST 5Original post

ditto that - Mooty is great, and if you're in the bay area, even better. any GT3 questions - he's your guy

POST 6Original post

Mooty collects and sells GT3s and Ed collects parts.

FIFY. Thanks again, Ed.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its very light.... maybe 2lbs for the tray and whatever the tools weigh with a can of porsche fix a flat and a compressor. My OEM compressor died and was on the market for a compressor, then this tray came along. I always wanted to get rid of that spare.... it prob @40+lbs. So I would say 30+lbs of weight reduction easily....

POST 10Original post

That's a great weight reduction in the front...but will you encourage the front end to become too light as opposed to reducing rear weight, or is 40lbs negitiable? I like the fit and looks of the tray.

POST 11Original post

Ferd's got the 2K edition. Its a C4 so no worries about weight up front.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7665853

alot of people get rid of the spare.... the 997 dont have a spare. 40lbs of reduction is really not that much from the overall weight of the car. However, trying to reduce 30+lbs is huge weight reduction in these cars.... look at the battery, expensive for 20+lbs reduction. Gt3 seats.... 60+lbs.... etc. This mod is almost free w/o the pretty tray.

POST 21Original post

I was laughing a couple times yesterday, this one and the one with the "headlights" (I have to go back and find that once I get my PC at home fixed up... hard to see on the blackberry and NO WAY I am opening those kinda posts at work )

POST 23Original post

Man I just couldn't fathom letting go of the spare for a can of goo.....

POST 24Original post

Mooty - For some reason I thought this was a tray that you custom made. After re-reading the thread I guess it is a OEM part.

POST 25Original post

Found it in the GT3 section of my PET program. The part number is 996.721.163.90, it is called a "foam Tray." The list is $98.12 and Porscheeomparts.com has it for $75.58. They are usually the same as Sunset and Suncoast but have an on-line look-up that is helpful. Tempting. I have the spare and then an amp and crossovers that I have never permanently mounted. With a C4 the gas tank and drive mechanism takes up a lot of trunk space. If I eliminated the spare and used this I could then build a shelf to fit above it for the amp and crossovers, and still have more space in the trunk. In ten years of having my 996 I have never used the spare. Fix a flat and the pump would probably do it.

Yeah your feelings are because you never needed it. I did with a sidewall cut that wouldn't be fixed with a can....
