295/30ZR18 is the size I'm running with no issues.

Porsche recommends a 285 width on the 10x18 rear wheel used for the MK II narrow body cars.

look at tire mfg web sites, most have tire size charts and show what tire is used on what size wheel

Because of the wider tire I kept it to the high side so used Porsche's 36-44 psi recommendation.

Suggestion
I am not yet convinced Bridgestone is the right brand for these 225/40 and 295/30 tires as I had to swap several ones before I got a set which was within spec.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A newbie question...
My new-to-me 996 C2 w/ 18" Carrera wheels is in need of new tires. I believe the recommended rear tire size is
285
/30ZR18. The rear tires currently on the car, however, are
295
/30ZR18.
Will the 18" Carrera rear wheels accept both 285 and 295 tire sizes?
Hi,
I am new here, first post.
A quick introduction;
- living in the Netherlands and keeping an eye on this forum for interesting technical discussions
- bought 4 months ago a polarsilber 996 C2 mk2 Tip from 2002; with 137k km/ 85k mi
- clear history of the car: revised engine at 124k km/77k mi; all mods done, including improved cooling and recently also a mod of the AOS
- looking forward to some good driving time, in fact already did (4300 mi)!
Posting here because I have also 295 mounted at the rear. And I am interested in comments and experiences form people with regards these deviating tire sizes.
I recently mounted a new set of rubber and I stayed with the configuration that was already on the car. My Indie confirmed it was a nice combination.
fronts: 18x8J with Bridgestone Potenza RE 050 A 235/40 ZR18 (91Y) N
rears: 18x10J with Bridgestone Potenza S-02 A 295/30 ZR18 98Y XL N3
Notice the different types in front and rears. And also a wider tire in front
The official recommendation for 18x8 and 18x10 wheels are 225/40R18 en 285/30R18. But I read on different places that 295 does fit on 10J.
Indeed tires do fit, driving and cornering is pretty good. However I have to mention that I do not have any prior Porsche experience besides any experience with different tire sizes. So it is impossible for me to compare. And point out the differences between the two, i.e. the 295 tire is also slighly higher than the 285 as they have further the same aspect ratio.
The tires have a rim protection, on the rears I notice that it is more bend inward. Here again, no reference with a 285 equivalent of the same brand.
Further I am still in doubt as to a good pressure to put the tires on. Because of the wider tire I kept it to the high side so used Porsche's 36-44 psi recommendation. Or should I lower it more especially because of the extra width?
I am not yet convinced Bridgestone is the right brand for these 225/40 and 295/30 tires as I had to swap several ones before I got a set which was within spec. This was verified with a laser calibrator, rims are straight and round, but some tires were not perfectly round as they had a serious radial tire run-out. Could be bad luck as well I know.
When the rears are worn out I will swap and try the 225/40 - 285/30
Looking forward to comments and posts in this topic!

Porsche recommends a 285 width on the 10x18 rear wheel used for the MK II narrow body cars. The recommendation for the turbo and C4S cars is 295 width, but the rear wheels are 11x18.
I'm not saying the 295 won't fit a narrow body car; I'm just passing on the stock tire widths.
The 295 will fit on a narrow body as that's what the GT3 has.
But the issue is that the 10 inch rim is a bit too narrow for that width of tire. Just by definition a 295 width is the equivalent of about 11.6 inches. So you'll have quite a bit of tire unsupported by rim. It would work but you won't really get the real benefit of the wider tire without the wider rim.
Ok, good to know. I do not track the car, so never will be that close to its limits.
Just was curious if it would matter in day to day driving.
295 indeed looks good.
Maybe will give 285/30 or 285/35 a try later. I have the space for a slightly higher tire in the wheel arch.
