Anyone else have some fun in the snow today? We have about 2-3" here in the greater STL area this evening, so I took my 19 year old son out. After I had some general drifting fun, he took over and got some parking lot experience drifting, donuts, losing control, and finding control again. It was a proud moment as it started to sink in how to modulate the throttle in correspondence with the steering wheel to get the car to go where you want it.
I might have done it, but we got ice and sleet and all I have is the P-Zeros. I'm not sure how well I'd be able to even get to and from a sufficient parking lot.
Good on you for actually driving it in this weather and for teaching your son both the skills necessary for winter driving and how much fun it can be.
I don't blame you. If we had ice I would have kept mine in the garage also. But we had really nice soft powdery stuff that was perfect for some fun.
I also have DWS06+ on so that helped too.
This weather makes me wish I had money for a
911
Dakar!
I could not get the
Cayman
out today. Running on
Conti
Sport 02 and it's pure ice where I am at.
Did get the daughters 09
Cayenne
(DWS06+ on fatty 20s) out today and got her behind the wheel on ice for the first time in her HS parking lot. She did a couple of 360s and felt antilock brakes for the first time. Said it was too scary and she will call out on life on these days. 😂🤣
I told her, know you limits in life and keep yourself safe. If you don't feel comfortable, don't do it.
Asked her if she would like me to show here fun on ice. Her face was a moment I will always remember, pure smiles and so much adrenaline. 😂🤣
My first car was 76
911S
, long story, and was too poor for it. Lived in the Foothills/Mountains in Colorado as my only car. Nothing was more awesome then driving by cars and SUVs in ditches, upside, or anything else and I am passing them by with ease. Miss that thing.
I can't bring myself to bring my
718
GTS 4.0
out in the snow. I've seen what salt has done to my other vehicles and it just makes me shudder. Not criticizing -- that looks like a ton of fun, I just can't get there mentally myself. Nice watching others do it though!
Agreed. I would love to put a
Cayman
/
Boxster
through the paces in snow and ice conditions. As long as it’s someone else’s. LOL. Growing up in the northeast, I’ve been through many winters of salt, slush, sanded roads, grit embedded everywhere in the undercarriage and suspension and it’s not pretty. Now in Florida I get to keep my car clean and mostly dry. Garage kept, and if it calls for rain I take the other ride. Finally a change of venue after dealing with weather conditions for 50+ years.
Michelin
Alpins for my 981S. Have had it in snow plenty. Not too much salt where I'm at. Just for safety now. I just take it out when weather is nice. Great fun in snow though. And the Alpins do great. No
LSD
.
Not quite as fun as driving a
Porsche
(actually, a lot less fun) but the wife and I spent the last week in Iceland, chasing the northern lights. The weather was bad all week. We did see the lights for about 30 minutes on Saturday night. Anyway, our rental for a Nissan all-wheel drive SUV. All cars in Iceland run studded
tires
. It has been years since I've got much practice driving in the snow. All the upland roads were packed snow/ice, even though they plow continuously. I was pretty cautious but at one point the slush on the shoulder tried to put me in the ditch. I was able to recover but that got my heart rate up. The wife made me subtract another 20 kph from my target speed. Probably a good idea.
That sounds like a really fun and interesting trip, even if you didn't get to see the northern lights very much!
