Hey!
Sometimes modding my car can be a very solo experience, so would love to know what other people have found to be their favourite modifications/upgrades to this beautiful
Cayman 987.2s
platform.
Here's mine:
1) Valvetronic
exhaust
and
Top Gear 200 cell headers
. With two
Vibrant 1792 Resonators
. Including Cargraphic X pipe tips. Lost a lot of raw DB and has smoothed everything out. Sounds beautiful.
2) Forged
Apex VS-5RS 18 inch wheels
(saved 16kg rotational weight. Switched from 19's to 18's and removed spacers. Added
Continental 7
's with 40mm profile.
3) Complete Function First gearbox overhaul Inc
numeric racing cables
4) 2 stage paint correction and
ceramic coating
5)
Eibrech Pro lowering springs
6) Cobra bucket seat - Negaro Circuit (fixed mount on low base plate)
7) Teyes CC3 2K Headunit (removes ugly rubber side panels)
8)
Red Line MTL 75W80
(
API GL-4
) Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (much smoother)
9) Steering wheel extender
10) Pagid street plus brake pads for road (no squeal) and Ferrodo DS2500 for track use.
I've had many more, but these are the most impactful so far.
Look forward to hearing others thoughts and opinions!
I’m keeping the
Spyder
bone stock, however my favorite
986
Mod? RSS UnderPulley for sure. Reducing the parasitic drag on that engine was instantly apparent. The mod didn’t compromise the AC functionality or change the cooling system, you did have to trim a tab off the engine case.
Going from Base to "R"/"
Spyder
" springs.
What is #8, and what does it accomplish?
my single favorite mod on my 987CS was by far the
OS Giken LSD
1)
Numeric cables
and a bunch of other shifter mods to get (most of) the slack out of the linkage
2)
Sprint Booster
3)
Mr12Volt CarPlay add-on
to the PCM3
4) Reduced strength spring in the clutch pedal
booster
Cayman R suspension
on my
987.2 Cayman S
.
Anyone have input on those high flow cats vs cat deleted
headers
?
Well I have a fixed Cobra bucket seat fixed to a base plate and I'm 6 foot tall. That means the steering wheel is now to far away for my reach.
Do you mean like this?
Cayman R Suspension - manual gearbox - Carnewal
My only worry with the Cayman R suspension would be losing PASM.
Where did you buy yours?
I recently had Eibrech 30mm lowering springs but need to refresh LCA's, Top Mounts and bushes for more Camber next.
Then eventually B16's and a modern LSD.
I don't. All I can say is that the
Top Gear 200 cell headers
with valvetronic
exhaust
was too loud and that
Vibrant 1792 resonators
with
Cargraphic X pipes
have made the sound absolutely beautiful.

I have been waiting for a min as the
Cayman
was getting an top end overhaul and complete shifter/cable overhaul.
I do find it hard to say, what is my favorite mod, because I bought a 16 year old car last year and it was still 100% factory. Factory suspension, bushings, engine & trans mounts etc... so my comparison is that everything I have done was my favorite mod.
So at the end of the day, everything I have done is my favorite mod 😃.
But here are a few:
- Euro Impulse weighted shift knob:
shorter in height by 1.5 inches, larger circumference, and the flat top when in odd gears, especially in 6th is so much better for resting the hand on the shifter
- Porsche SSK Shifter; FF Right Shift; FF Cable ends; FF trans shift link; new-ish OEM Shift cables:
combining all in one as everything was done all at once. Love the crispness of the shifting, not so rifle-mechanical-metal clunking action but just enough that it feels like a street car and not a track car, love the shorter shifting for spirited driving, but also kinda miss the longer throws because of the nostalgia
- Cayman R Springs; Bilstien B8 shocks:
can't speak to factory new vs new setup, so I do like the performance, but honestly, love not having the wheel gap, looks so much cleaner!
- Ceramic 5% window Tint all windows; Ceramic 70% Windshield Tint; Medium Tint Taillamps:
love dark windows but more importantly, love not getting a sun burn while driving, keeps the heat down inside the cars, and protects the interior from any additional degradation.
- LED Low Beams; LED Fogs:
love being able to see the roads, simple enough.
- Full Focal Stereo System; Android Auto:
I came from no Bluetooth Audio and blown speakers, but I know factory and no factory compares to my build. Love crisp, clear sound with windows down and enjoy the roads!
- Light weight Dynamat:
helped cut down all some of the road noise and keep sound in the car. Doors and full trunk completed, still would like to do the floors at some point.
- FF Semisolid Trans Mount; OEM Engine Mount; FF Orange Engine Mount Insert:
I can't compare to new, but all of the new parts restored the whole experience of the car. What I do love, this does intro a slight NVH, but give me a sense of old school 911 feel. The way the car shakes now when it starts. And this ever slight engine rumble feeling in the seat. Nothing is coming thru the shifter which I love too. Cruising, no NVH, but a sitting/idling points, it's there.
to the above post of mine I just added a CF rear spoiler and the shfter boat delete mod.
The long range goal is to drive it cross country from Virginia to the
next
rennsport then leave it at my sons place in Texas to explore the southwest for a few months. so now I’m working on reliability.
I honestly don’t think a better car was made by
Porsche
in the last 20 years.
So this is one mod you may
really
want to reconsider. The Cayman has a transaxle and uses shared oil for the gearbox and differential. The diff requires GL5 and MTL is GL4: MTL is not recommended for the hypoid gears in diffs and you are likely increasing differential wear. From the product data sheet:
What are yiu doing for reliably?
Bought mine with 70K and now has 105k, and other than tbe battery (I let it sit for over a month and it was already weak) it has been 100% reliable.
I did the water pump at 100k just to be safe.
Aa
maintenance not as a repair.
