Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Excellent question and a test I should have already performed.
Leading evidence: 'Test i should have already performed' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Test i should have already performed' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

One slight difference is the engine is running and still making electricity charge to the battery when you are sat inside the car using the dash switch.

My interest in getting this to work properly is the convenience of being able to exit the car with the top down and use the key to close everything up so it can be locked and secured.

However, when standing outside of the car using the key in the door then the engine is not running therefore not producing enough charge to raise the windows.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can raise the top with the key in the door but it won't continue to raise the windows at the end of the top cycle. What is the most likely cause/fault related to this? My car is a 2004 - did they change this function at some time?
Excellent question and a test I should have already performed. I just cycled the top up and down using the dash switch and everything works perfectly, including the windows going up/down as described in the manual.
I tried the door key again too, just for fun, and while it will close the top, it will not also raise the windows.
This must be a clue for someone who knows how this thing operates - missing some contact in the door key mechanism or ????
Honestly, I'm stumped. I was initially thinking that it might be the microswitch that indicates the handbrake is engaged, but I'm not sure that would cause this problem.
One slight difference is the engine is running and still making electricity charge to the battery when you are sat inside the car using the dash switch. The battery has a full charge to complete the final part of the operation procedure. (Raising all windows). However, when standing outside of the car using the key in the door then the engine is not running therefore not producing enough charge to raise the windows. That's my guess. Apparently it takes a lot of charge to operate the top up and down. I only use the key in the door method to lower the top when coming back to the car on a hot sunny day. If mine did not complete the raising of the (front windows ONLY this time as the back ones remain down when the top is down) then I raise them manually (if needed) after I start the car. JUST MAYBE your battery is not getting enough charge OR the battery is due for a change. They last 4 to 5 years approx. Just my thoughts on the matter. BTW as soon as I see the front side windows start to raise I release the key and stop them. At that point the cycle is comple.
I did all of this testing with the engine off. My interest in getting this to work properly is the convenience of being able to exit the car with the top down and use the key to close everything up so it can be locked and secured.
