When I typed of using mole grips in times past, I was careful of both the crush damage factor on the internals of the hose, and used a cut off of matting to ensure the mole grip teeth did not damage the flexible outer surface....

With skills like those of your nephew to hand, might be worth having him do both front callipers and check the pipes over.

Whipped the wheel off for a better look and to clean any brake fluid off - definitely that connecting line that’s leaking - so hopefully a relatively simple job

May have lucked out - spoke to my nephew who is a F1 mechanic/pit crew for Haas and apparently used to rebuild brakes every 2 races on the F4 cars whilst working at DoubleR - He has some time during the F1 summer break so is going to take the caliper off and replace all the seals and give it a once over and replace the connection pipe if needed at the same time.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

noticed something wet on the drive - closer inspection confirmed a leak of some sort - liquid was clear and oily No warning lights on so moved it on the drive and brake pedal was very soft. Looks like the little pipe on the bottom of the calliper is leaking and inside of the wheel was coated with brake fluid. washed it off as best I can, but need to determine if it’s a replaceable part or if a new calliper is needed - recommendations welcome Quote

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It looks like it could be the connecting pipe that has failed as brake fluid looks to be running down the small pipe and dripping off at the lowest point. Is the correct part would you say? POST 4Original post

Wow, good job you spotted that could have been nasty. Let us know how you get on ..

POST 5Original post

Looks to me like there is some sort of shrouding around the pipe which perhaps has allowed in moisture and held it to allow corrosion to eat away at the pipe till it failed in a limited way... I suspect that the shrouding may be intended to protect the pipe from any chance of it making contact with the calliper, or suffering from heat generated by the disc under heavy braking thus avoiding heat transfer to the brake fluid....? BTW if your brake pedal goes to the floor while braking just pump like mad, as opposed to trying to bury the pedal through the floor, even with a leaking pipe if you pump fast enough you will manage to retard progress by some degree, till you eventually run out of brake fluid...!!!

I'm not risking driving it anywhere, even just moving it on the drive and the fluid was spraying out under any pressure. Need to figure out a way of getting to a local garage. Had considered using a mobile mechanic but concerned if the pipe is seized into the calliper whether they would have the tools to fix it

POST 7Original post

Sorry if you thought I was suggesting you drive any machine with leaking brake fluid at any time..... Though long story very short, I have clamped off a flexy hose with more grips to get home on one occasion.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2752728

No, all good although the mole grips could be a good idea Its still dripping way, both nuts and the pipe directly beneath each is dry so it must be the pipe within the shrouding that has failed. Will have to wait until we get back from holiday to fix it, so is currently jacked up and supported with the wheel off an an oil drip tray underneath. At least no one can steal it

POST 9Original post

I read some previous threads recently on here documenting the various failing brake pipes on 996, might be helpful depending who you’re getting to look at it.

POST 10Original post

Jam the brake pedal down to stop the drip, easy fix, new bit of pipe, use the old rubber sleeve.

POST 11Original post

Best to stop the fluid loss, you can but a brake hose clamp at Halfords, if there might be one near where you are, plenty available on the www.. any local garage can sort out a brake pipe issue.... Also if you clamp it off, might be worth topping up the brake fluid to save having to mess around bleeding brakes once you have inadvertently allowed it to drain down and a load of air got into the system...?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2752765

Thanks for the tip - i've clamped off the flexi hose - after some more googling, the other potential cause is one of the pistons leaking and dripping onto the connector line - so going to have to remove the caliper for a better investigation

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

May have lucked out - spoke to my nephew who is a F1 mechanic/pit crew for Haas and apparently used to rebuild brakes every 2 races on the F4 cars whilst working at DoubleR - He has some time during the F1 summer break so is going to take the caliper off and replace all the seals and give it a once over and replace the connection pipe if needed at the same time. Replacement seal kit ordered from Bigg Redd

POST 14Original post

these things are quite handy, you can cap off the supply and remove the calipers to save you having to bleed the ABS if there's too much fluid loss.

POST 15Original post

With skills like those of your nephew to hand, might be worth having him do both front callipers and check the pipes over. Always wary of clamping old flexy hoses lest one might create another problem.... When I typed of using mole grips in times past, I was careful of both the crush damage factor on the internals of the hose, and used a cut off of matting to ensure the mole grip teeth did not damage the flexible outer surface.... proper hose clamps are the best choice to minimise possible hose damage.
